Maimonides Medical Center

This review is LONG overdue. In February 2013 my grandfather was severely ill and due to his condition he was losing a lot of blood. I drove up to NY to take care of him and at that time he was at the time being treated (and I use that word very loosely) by the folks over at SUNY Downstate medical. In the time I was there he had to be rushed to the ER twice. When the ambulance arrived to his home a 3^rd time, I begged them not to take him back there, and so he was driven to Maimondides. He received two blood transfusions and they scheduled an emergency surgery for him, a surgery that was scheduled for the following week by his other «care» providers who felt it could wait.
The surgeon at Maimonides was Dr. David Silver and he was absolutely incredible. Everything about him was fantastic. He has an excellent bedside manner and he’s damn good at his job. I am eternally grateful to Dr. Silver, as he saved my grandfather’s life. My grandfather is still doing well today and we owe it all to this hospital!
Based on my experience and my grandfather’s glowing recommendation, I highly recommend this medical center.

The worst hospital I’ve probably been too. Came to the ER and left me on the stretcher for 2+ hours. There was no nurse or anyone to check or ask anything. When I asked a nurse when will I be seen she said just to wait. The staff doesn’t seem to care. They should hire people who has the personality to help and care for people not just any idiot.

The emergency room looks like something out of the walking dead. I’ve been here for over 3 hours and have yet to see a doctor and the are barely any patients here. Doctors and nurses are sitting around laughing and joking loudly and paying no attention to patients. Never again…

This review is to bring up the obvious prejudice going on in the hospital. In this predominantly Jewish neighborhood they get 1^st class treatment and the staff are expected to bend to them. No I am not an antisemite.
My 93 year old relative was waiting in the ER for over 48 hours to get a bed in the cardiac ward. Which is aggravating, but they didn’t have any available beds… so not much they can do. While being in the ER for so long we experienced and witnessed how they treat all other ethnicities and faiths with a second class regard. People of Jewish faith were wheeled in through a separate door entrance, requests were filled right away, seen before others who had been waiting hours and were spoken to with dignity. People did go up and ask why the Jewish people were being taken back already when they just got there and the nurses always told them their illness is a priority because it was more severe… the statistics on that doesn’t quite work out on that one.
The staff who ended up taking care of my relative on the cardiac floor were almost all excellent. A Jewish man had helped himself to my relatives reclining chair and another patients reclining chair and refused to give it back. He wanted 3 reclining chairs in his room so that his family could be comfortable when they visited! A nurse tried to get it back and he was yelling, «How dare you, my people put money into this hospital you better treat me with respect or I will report you!» The man was allowed to keep 2 of the 3 chairs. It was repulsive and infuriating to see this prejudice behavior going on in a hospital. Shame on you Maimonides!

As most reviews posted, the ER rooms are awful.
Super cramped and crowded, basically no patient contact care at all.
My grandpa was admitted for a few days because of minor heart impacts. He stayed in the ER for 24 hours until they got him a room.
Nurses are not as attentive, the interns and assistants were more caring about their jobs. However the doctors showed great interest and willingness to help.

Depends on who services you. Of course a certain group is preferred over Others but overall staff is good wait time is crazy though so if youre going in for just a check up clear your sched the rest of the day

Horrible service. Bums everywhere. Smells like piss. Someone has been waiting here for 3+ hours. Only thing I got outta this wait is a Benadryl. And I still have to wait to leave. Why does getting discharge papers take forever? Especially when all I got was a Benadryl. The so-​called patient caretaker needs to stop putting lip gloss and be nicer to these folks.

My brother sliced his finger by some prankster that tied fishing lines around the block. A car picked up the line and my dog got tangled with the line. My brother saved my dog but he was deeply cut on his middle finger. The receptionist was very professional and sent us to Fast Track. Dr. Pete and his assistant was amazing. He stitched my brother up and we are about to leave the hospital! So grateful for a team of professional staff!

Before read the whole thing, please be aware that i’m a certified medical interpreter and have been in the medical field for years. I have seen and worked with so many hospitals, nurses and great doctors.
this is the first time I went to a hospital for my own health. I was in search of a hospital on a Thanksgiving night and Maimonides was the one that is open and not far from where i live.
I went to the emergency. the wait to submit the document was 10 min. Add another hour for doctor to see you. BTW, nobody seems to care of why you are seating and waiting for. They didn’t get my vitals until i told them I’ve been waiting there for 20 min. The doctor was a very young person which could be a great thing but not in this case. Conversation with the doctor was very uncomfortable since she was not a listener but rather a person dragging all the conversation to the symptoms that she wants to hear. She asked me some questions which i answered as no. Because she couldn’t place my symptoms anywhere in her mind as symptom-​diagnose chart, she asked the same questions again and again. I had some symptoms which i wanted to mention but she was far off of listening to me. She was also talking to other people in the middle of our conversation and her attention was everywhere but us.
After she learned that i have knowledge on what she speaks (Medical terminology etc) she changed her behavior from ignoring me to somewhat listening to me. That itself is a very dishonest practice. Why do i have to show her what i know and what can be possibly done ??
I requested a blood and urine test since i don’t want to go back home with having a «You are young and healthy person»
Tests turned out «i’m a healthy person» I asked if there is anything to check my thyroid as i was in pain when i swallow. she said no.
A few days passed. I went to see a primary physician in the same hospital with thinking what i had with the doctor was just unfortunate coincidental experience.
1)The doctor in the office was not any different. She didn’t even look at my face when i got into her office. What if i had a red eye or some sort of visual symptoms? anyways, She was more talkative than the other doctor. I had to interfere her to say something or talk about the symptoms i have. She still kept going and said everything was ok. After i showed some resistance to accept what she says she suggested that i can get a strap test.
2) Strap test turned positive and they asked me why nobody took this test when i first came in without really knowing they are blaming the emergency department of the same hospital now.
3) They put some sort of counseling information on the papers which i’ve never received.
4) I asked the doctor to send me to the closest pharmacy so i could get the medication before i go home. I went to the pharmacy which was a few blocks away and they said there was nothing prescribed for me. I had to put all the documents together to find a number they can call and make the owner call them and ask about the pills which took another half an hour.
SHORTCUT: If you care about your health and want to get help, beware of this hospital and go somewhere else !

Was here in the emergency room last night. I felt well taken care of. It’s easy to find, the security guard was helpful, and the bathroom was just fine.

My daughter was treated in the pediatric ER. All of the nurses were amazing with her. Dr Marla Levine cared for her, and this woman is a treasure. Thank you all for making a scary time much much more palatable. I cannot thank them enough for their prompt, thorough care.

This is a review for labor & delivery. I gave birth to my son here. The rooms are tiny, the food sucks, and the night nurses were just OK. My son was born premature and spent some time in the NICU. What could have been a nightmare was made so much better by the amazing NICU nurses and facility. I never doubted that he was being given the best care possible when I could not be with him. All of the nurses were so kind and gentle with him. We could tell he had a special place in his primary nurse’s heart – as did she in ours. I got more face time with his doctors during those days than with my OB during my entire pregnancy. There are many insignificant reasons to give Maimonides a bad review – but when the unthinkable happens, this is the hospital you want to be at.

Worst place to deliver. They will convince you to have c section even when you do not want and are not at risk. At one point you will agree and sign the paper for c section because they been pushing you to make a decision where you don’t have all the information. They also like to hold the newborn more days just so that they could make more money. First it was his blood sugar level, then it was mothers lack of knowledge on how to feed, and now is baby turning blue. I could understand the blood sugar level, but mothers is plain excuse to make you stay longer. When asked nurse lorra about pulse oximetry when the baby turned blue she initially said it was 80 and I said u know if u have 80 pulse ox that means you have some sort of CHF then she started changing numbers. When she realized I knew what I was talking about she told me to come and speak with the doctors. It has been said in previous comments and I confirm that the priority is given if you are Jewish, if you not then better find your self a another hospital so that you can avoid this nonsense. Now it has been exactly one week and they want the mother to have CPR??? Reall ??? Which hospital requires this to discharge the baby, it is just one more reason to hold off discharge just another day. I would understand and would agree with them if it is something critical, but lame excuse so that they could make you stay longer and more money. I say u not in the business of caring but plain money making. Avoid this place for you own benefit and save some nerves because you will be pushed to the limits.

Avoid the ER at all costs
I pulled something really bad 2 years ago and I went to the ER because I was in a lot of pain. Maimonides is so overcrowded that there were no individual rooms. Patients were lying in cots all over the ER. I had someone directly to the right, left, and behind me.
It took forever to be seen and a million different people came to ask the same questions.
Maimonides somehow took my insurance information down incorrectly (as well as my address) so I’m still receiving bills to this day. I already paid 3 ($ 500 ish) but now there are 2 more ($ 1,500). I emailed them a year ago to sort it out so when they never responded, I figured everything was good but instead, they sent me to collections because THEY took down the wrong address and insurance information
Going to Maimonides was the biggest mistake ever. I’d rather bear through excruciating pain then go back there

This hospital has been my home for the past year and today, on my last day, I’ve decided to check-​in and give a review. 4.5 stars to be exact is how I rate this hospital. Once you get to know the staff and people working in the different offices and departments, you’ll understand why people and patients keep coming back. Technology wise, being in the medical field, I’m fairly familiar with advances and his hospital is definitely up-​to-​date. Would absolutely love to come back and work here again given the opportunity.

The worst hospital they do not value people. people are lined like animal no privacy or respect no more to come to this hospital even if I die

Nurses are extremely rude here. I can’t believe the nurses are allowed to talk to patients like that

If I were at «death’s door «& MAIMONIDES Hospital was the last medical refuge left standing on the planet Earth, I would prefer to die anywhere else except for this HELL HOLE.
I desperately needed lower back surgery in order to relieve /​reduce some cronical pain that I had been suffering with for over a year. I was «steered «into having the required surgery at MAIMONIDES HOSPITAL. I did everything that was required of me before having the procedure, eg. MRI, chest Exray, blood work, several medical clearances (Cardiologist & Primary), the list goes on and on. They had me jumping all over Brooklyn before I was finally approved for my surgery. One location to meet with the performing doctor, another location for «their «preoperative testing and then FINALLY the main building where the «operation» was to be performed. Why can’t they have one central location where all of the aforementioned could have been done?
Here’s the «straw that broke the camel’s back.
I am a diabetic. This was the first thing that I mentioned in my paperwork and interviews. And even if I didn’t mention it, it was quite evident by the list of medications that I had supplied them with. Throw in the fact that I also suffer from hypertension helps to show how indifferent the admitting staff is at this institution.
They call me the day before the scheduled day/​date of my procedure with a 12 noon check in time. Keep in mind that you are required to fast the night before with nothing to eat or drink after midnight. I immediately complain to the person on the phone that I am diabetic & that is way too long for me to go without eating or drinking. She very abruptly tells me that there is nothing that she could do and slams the phone on me. I call back the doctor and the hospital only to hear that this is the only time slot available, take it or leave it. I decided that I would «man up» and deal with it. I get to the hospital one hour ahead of time in hopes of getting a head start on my preadmission paperwork. It’s now 1:00pm, all my paperwork is done when I get a call from my doctor that they had an «emergency «(?) & that my surgery was now pushed to7:00pm. Just do the simple math, 19 hours of no food nor drink and the patient is diabetic and hypertensive. A sure disaster in the making. Maybe if I went into a comma then maybe just maybe they would treat me sooner (I use the word treat me loosely)
Here’s my point: a diabetic patient should NEVER, EVER be scheduled for ANY PROCEDURE after more than 8 maybe 9 hours of fasting. You are looking for problems where there needs not be. If you schedule said patient for an operation within that time frame and an emergency in the OR happens & the diabetic person could not be operated on, then you reschedule the procedure for another day but you make sure that the patient has something to eat/​drink before sending them home or back up to the room in the hospital. Hell, expecting a perfectly «healthy person «to fast for 19 hours is crazy and inhuman.
Get your act together MAIMONIDES HOSPITAL before you needlessly KILL someone.

If I could give them no stars I would. I’ve been visiting the their emergency center a bit frequently because of my parents. But not anymore, their nurses are beyond rude. They’re super unorganized, I mean who looses your blood work?! And they don’t even help you properly.
My mother has been in here 3 times with less than 2 weeks and they don’t even know what’s wrong. Not rocket science. The first time she was there all they did was look at her barely and gave her medication and let her go. The medication did nothing, and she had to come back to next day. The doctor on the next day was much more helpful, and was able to help. But turns out her health worsened and we had to bring her back. They just gave her a bed and no one came to check on her. No nurse or doctor while she cries in pain. And when asked who her nurse is, the other nurses gave an attitude and weren’t a bit helpful.
Definitely not coming back here.

I flew to New York from California because my father had a heart attack and liver, kidney and lung failure at once. He was admitted to the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CICU). What an amazing staff. The attending physicians, Dr. Moscovich, Dr. Toby, Dr. Amber and the Manager Nurse Ingrid did an amazing job with my father and all of the questions his family and friends had. They were very attentive to my father which was in seriously critical condition.
Since it is a Jewish hospital, we had Rabbi’s come visit and give prayers. Another great service by Maimonides.
The cafeteria itself, eh, not so great. Other than that, I trust these guys with my own life.
