Mini Max Toys & Cuts

I hate to write a bad review about a local business, especially one founded by a couple of moms (according to the website), but I get the impression the business has changed owners or something is really different.
We never ended up getting my daughters hair cut today because within 5 minutes of starting she fell out of the chair head first — right past the sharp scissors. There was no belt or strap in the taxi chair. The video playing was frantic. But mostly it was clear the woman cutting her hair did not know what she was doing. She ran away when my daughter fell.
The toys look dated and the room was dark, which makes me feel even worse writing this if they have fallen on hard times.
I feel like something is really different than the cute local shop portrayed on the website or the referral I got from my friend who had come here a few years ago. I would not recommend bringing your child here for a haircut.

Took our 2.5 y/​o son here for his first haircut and it came out pretty good. After a few minutes playing at the Henry street playgrounds he complained of his hair ‘itching’ his hair again. We popped back in and Crystal, their superstar stylist, happily re-​trimmed his hair around the ears before she had to tackle another customer.
We would give them 5 stars but they could do a better job on their selection of toys for the kids that get a reward for a job well done (well-​behaved). Maybe just more things in the $ 10 and under range. But for a hair salon that specializes in kids this place is great!

I would not give Mini Max Toys & Cuts any star. And if they allow to give a negative star rating, I would give a negative star. My grandson went to Mini Max Toys & Cuts for his very first cut. The gentlemen who was cutting his hair did not calm my grandson or even speak with him. He played a DVD that was not for my grandson age group. My daughter had to try to distract my grandson while this guy cut away. My daughter instructed the guy to trim and to cut the bangs from my grandson’s eyes. This guy cut the bangs and nothing else. He did not touch his side burns. The cut is so bad that the next day we took my grandson to get his hair cut at another place. I would not allow his guy to cut any human or animals hair. He should be cutting hair for a funeral home. As for the first hair cut promotion. You need to request the clipping or else you can pickup the clipping from the floor. They just hand you this colorful paper and you fill it out and glue the hair. This their big promotion for first time customer. I recommend for everybody stay away from this place. The price is not worth the money!

Very professional. My daughter loves coming here for haircuts. I’m taking one star off because it’s a bit pricey for a kids cut.

Do not take your son here!!! I just had an awful experience. Raymond gave my son bangs. I asked him to keep my son’s hair long, just to trim it. He trimmed it around the sides and back and then hacked inches off the front. I am pretty progressive about «girl’s» v. «boys» styles, I’ve even been known to put hairclips in his hair. But this looked HORRIBLE. It would have been a bad haircut for a girl too. He ended up having to cut it all off, and it still looks dumb. Plus, while he was cutting it short he kept telling my son «sit still, you’re gonna mess up your haircut.» Not possible, Raymond had already taken care of that, but it also made me wonder if this guy has any experience with kids at all. I regret ever going here.

I hve been coming here for 3 years now and I just can’t deal with the rude staff at this place anymore. While I love Danielle the stylist, everyone else is incredibly rude. Everytime i try an ake an appointment, they are beyond difficult on the phone and totally unaccomodating. Today was the final straw. I was 5 minutes late for my son’s haircut appointment (which usually takes 5 min since he doesn’t have that much hair) and i was told that they had other people coming in and couldn’t take him… i MEAN SERIOUSLY.5 MINS!!! While i try to be on time, having kids sometimes makes me late and since this is a KIDS store you would think they could be just a bit flexible.

The hairstylist, Brittany was beyond awful. So nasty, and everytime my son cried during the cut she would just get flustered and walk away, look at her phone. I can’t say enough bad things, I didn’t leave her a tip. Stay away! BUT, Danielle cut my other son’s hair, she was very lovely and accommodating and made up for a lot of Brittany’s negative energy, she really needs to find a different career.

I wish I had looked at the reviews before taking my son here for his first haircut. It’s such a cute place with great toys, but the haircut he got was pretty bad. He had the cutest long shaggy hair, and I was very specific about leaving it long and shaggy looking, with his long bangs in front, maybe just a little layering and faux hawk action in the front — I wanted it to be hip and natural looking. And what he got was a straight-​up bowl cut. His bangs were cut in an uneven arc across his forehead! Everyone — his nanny, my friends, even his loving grandparents, took one look at him and said ‘wow, what a dorky haircut, poor kid’. I’m pissed.

i had to give high compliments to stephanie’s professionalism because she’s extremely patience with the first timer (my daughter) and gave us ideas for haircut designs. she even offered us a come back for trimming with no charge if my daughter maybe unhappy with her cut. all in all, we would be back as the toy store according to many customers is a good find too. ps. children with first time haircut gets a keepsake certificate and a lock of their hair as remembrance.

the salon definitely catered to pint-​sized patrons, which was great b/​c my kid isn’t a fan of haircuts, but the actual haircut was *meh*, at best. i had to ask the super-​sweet stylist to cut my kid’s bangs straight after she said she was done. once i got home, i realized that the cut was still crooked and ended up getting it fixed at an old school barber nearby.
i feel bad posting this b/​c both the stylist and the clerk at the register were great in terms of customer service, but for $ 22, i think the cut should have been even, at least.

I’ve been bringing my son in for haircuts about five times a year for maybe two years now. I like how they give him a beachy longish-​hair cut; so much better than the disaster we had one time going to a local barber, when they gave him a buzz. I like Mini Max more than Lulu’s because it’s less crowded. It’s similar to Lulu’s in that he sits in a little taxi and watches SpongeBob the whole time they work on him, so it’s totally fuss-​free. I’ve picked up some good gifts in there as well. It’s our go-​to spot!

The girl was friendly (especially considering my son started out cranky). But the cut was choppy in some areas, which I found very suprising from a professional. I hope it grows in soon, because from a distance it does look cute.

we had brittany for my son’t haircut, and his haircut was pretty bad. he had patches on the side that were visible from where she clipped too short. his bangs were diagonal. the main thing is that i asked for a FADE on the back and sides, and i specifically said not a buzz cut. she confirmed that a fade would be done… next thing i see her just buzzing up the back from neck to top of head with a #2 or 3 clipper… no attempt at a fade. i also said to keep it long on the top… she confirmed that would do that. minutes later, she asks, do you want clippers on the top? um, no.
i tipped her well… only because i was late. and, the guy at the front desk repeated about 3 times that we were late and caused a backup with their other appointments. yes, i apologized when i called, apologized when i walked in, apologized when i paid… but yet he still had to make a point of it. if he didn’t want to back up the sched, then he shouldn’t have taken us when we came.
the only reason i give a 2 star vs a 1 star is because they had a cute selection of toys.
we’re not going back.

A friend of mine recommended this placed for toddler haircuts. My nanny took my 2.5 year old to the appointment. I spoke to another stylist prior to the set appointment time – not Stephanie the one we had set up the cut with, as she was tied up. The haircut was mediocre with uneven strands that I easily trimmed. I’m just not sure why she didn’t even up the lose strands, that is after all what stylists are suppose to do. My nanny who never complains basically was treated like shit. Stephanie complained that she’d lost 2 potential appointments since my nanny was late. By the way, there weren’t any other clients waiting while my son got his hair cut. She complained she’d been cutting toddler hair for 2 years and insinuated that my son was fussier then most. She may have lost some business, my toddler may have been fussier, but suck it up. Rule number 1 – do not treat your customers like crap and dump on the «little people». I highly doubt the stylist would’ve been so unprofessional had I taken my son there myself. It was just much easier for her to dump on my nanny. This to me speaks volumes about a person. The haircut was choppy and the woman is nasty and unprofessional. Why would I give them repeat business.

I feel so badly giving this place a so-​so review because I think that there is a lot of great effort going on here and the toy part of the store is great. Lots of eco-​friendly and interesting items — very non-​Disney, which I really appreciate. The décor is also great and feels very Brooklyn. The haircut my son received, however, was pretty bad. It really seemed liked the stylist wasn’t quite sure how to approach his hair and honestly, of the 10 or so haircuts he has received this one is by far the worst. The bangs are a mess and in trying to thin out the thick hair on top she created this weird spiky clump and I’m just not even sure how it’s going to grow out. Actually, I can’t wait for it to grow out so that I can go somewhere else and get it re-​cut. To be honest I think that I might be done with getting hair cut at kids’ salons. The stylists seem less competent than just at a regular salon or barber shop. The store part is very cute though.

I have never written a review for any business before but feel compelled to in this case. I would never go back here and would not recommend for haircuts. Like another review listed, we went to Mini Max seeking an alternative to LuLu’s. The woman who is cutting hair here doesn’t seem like she has any formal training (she also seems miserable to be there) and both kids looked worse than if we did them at home… the baby even had bald spots in the back. I had to take them to Salon de Quartier to fix the glaring mistakes (they did a marvelous job and are $ 7 cheaper for a child’s haircut — definitely plan on taking them back there next time to see Velma, she’s awesome). This is a sweet toy shop if you need a gift but I urge you to look into better alternatives for your child’s haircuts. I think we as parents who are paying these premiums need to demand more than just movies and cute chairs. I think our expectations are too low for child haircutting, especially for boys… like it doesn’t matter as long as the hair is short. I called and spoke to the manager b/​c I thought they should know this information first and he was very pleasant and apologetic. Hopefully they make some changes. In the meantime, I wasted half a day, tortured my kids with 2 haircuts and spent $ 90 (with tips) on a 3 yr old and a 1 yr old’s haircuts. Like most of parenting, I learned an important lesson the hard way…

took my toddler son here last minute when we were walking by. i had intended to pop in and see what their haircut set-​up was, as we normally go to lulu’s in park slope. they have the same general set-​up as lulu’s – cool car for your child to sit in while he/​she watches a dvd. the stylist, stephanie, was OK. i have to say she seemed tentative with the shears compared to our regular person at lulu’s, who has years more experience – and who, unfortunately, has left. in the end, his haircut looks completely fine, so no big deal. i will likely come back here, given the convenient location.

Now, I’m not a mother but I have tons of friends who are. So, that means plenty of baby shower and birthday party gifts! When I came across Mini Max Toys and Cuts, I was so happy that I could buy unique gifts for newborn babies up until 5 years. Not being too savvy, the staff was really great in helping me choose the right gift for each kid. Even better, their free gift wrapping is so pretty and totally stood out from all the other gifts. But, best of all, the parents were so happy with the eco-​friendly and educational quality of the toys — so different from what they normally received. Definitely check out Mini Max if you need to buy gifts for little ones and are not too sure what works best — they make it super easy!

These guys are new and I’ve been seeing them around town for weeks handing out free balloons. So when I needed a last minute haircut to get the little guy ready for school pictures I headed over and they accommodated us without a hitch. Super friendly staff, nice toys, and seemingly great haircuts (from Stephanie). Very similar concept Lulu’s in Park Slope.
