Nassau Dairy & Meat

I love Christina’s –
– I do. So why have I gone there instead of Nassau Dairy all this time? Is it the hours? The fact that it’s on the corner? That they have a cat? That the counter staff is cute?
I don’t know.
Nassau might be better! Just one door down, Nassau has a better selection of meats and cheeses — a better deli; you can smell the meat! And while they have fewer packaged goods and groceries, they have fresher produce and other items that Christina’s doesn’t have.
The staff is also more friendly. I’ve been going to Christina’s for years. And not once has the proprietress inquired whether I speak Polish. As soon as I went to the counter for the first time, for a $ 6 purchase, the counterman spoke to me in Polish. When I answered in English, he was taken aback.
«You don’t speak Polish?»
«No.»
“‘Six’ is hard to say if you don’t speak it.”
«How do you say it?»
He told me. I repeated it, and I learned something.
I’ve not learned anything at Christina’s. I have pet the cat, however.
