The person who wrote this «novel» of a 1 star review is clearly very naïve about renting in NYC. Sounds like they have never rented an apartment in Manhattan before, otherwise they would know that landlords ALWAYS continue to show apts, even if they have a deposit or application, until the moment they have the checks and signed leases in their hands, and it’s a 100% done deal, because people flake out and bail at the last second ALL THE TIME. This is NYC; it’s the nature of the fast-​paced and highly-​competitive rental market here. Apts also frequently rent in minutes, with sometimes 2 – 3 applicants showing up literally at the same moment competing for the same apt.
No landlord is going to stop showing an apt or «hold it for you» just because you said you were coming in to apply. Please! Talk is cheap.
Also, you are clumsy enough to fall down stairs, so it sounds like you wouldn’t be a good fit to navigate a creaky, windy East Village apt building. The broker or owner probably got the hint, and doesn’t want people this moronic in the building. If you’ve ever rented an NYC apt before, you will know it doesn’t take much to spook a broker or landlord away from a tenant. Especially one who could potentially become litigious 2 weeks after they moved in, suing the landlord for $ 2M because they don’t know how to walk!
Spend less time writing ridiculous review about things you know nothing about (what it’s like to try to rent an apt in NYC), and more time watching where you walk!

Because of this place, I am now STUCK at my current residence.
I saw an ad for an apartment that said it was posted by the landlord/​owner, so I can only assume it was Newgent since the paperwork I still have clearly has their name on it. I answered the ad, via text message. The person who responded said I could view the apartment at 7 p.m. on March 16^th. I tried to get her to show me the place earlier, but she would not budge. Against my better judgement, due to the time, I went.
When she showed me the apartment, there was one other woman there and a couple who came in later. I asked this woman when would the apartment be ready and she said a few weeks, so if I needed a place urgently then don’t apply.
I saw the place and liked it, so she gave me the paperwork. The other woman and I proceeded to leave the building. Upon walking down the last flight of stair, I fell down the stairs and yes, there were witnesses. I swear my ankle felt like a noodle when I got up, but I was able to walk. I hobbled myself back to my apartment thinking that I was in pain due to the fall. I was wrong and by the next day I couldn’t even walk. My ankle is STILL swollen and it has been almost a month later.
Now back to the apartment I saw. Regardless of me injuring myself, I was still interested in the apartment. So I contacted the woman from the ad that showed me the apartment on March 17^th at 2:17 pm and told her about my injury and that I still wanted to get things to her for the apartment that week. Thanks to iMessage, I saw that she read my message at 2:18 pm on March 17^th.
She did not respond. I went about my business gathering the info and asking a friend to get me a money order to pay the application fee. Hours had passed, so I went back on CL to see if the ad was still there and to my «surprise» it was not.
I sent another text to this woman asking her if the apartment was still available. I already knew the answer, but I wanted to see if I would at the very least get a response, especially since she completely disregarded the first message I sent. She then told me that someone came in to sign the lease that day (March 17^th). That message from her telling me someone signed the lease came in around 7 pm on March 17^th.
If these guys knew someone was coming in to sign the lease, why was the apartment still being shown the day before? Correction, why was it being shown the night before? Why was I told that the apartment wouldn’t be ready for a couple of weeks, so there is no rush? Surely, the new tenant had to have scheduled the lease signing ahead of time. This new tenant had to be notified that they were approved ahead of time as well. So the people who came there on March 16^th at 7 p.m. were wasting their time. I do understand that apartments go fast, but at the very least when I contacted this agent (or whomever she is), she could have informed me of what was going on. Or she could have told me to get my application in fast, which still would have been redundant given that someone signed the lease the next day.
I wasted my time viewing that apartment and I STILL can’t even walk properly. I had to stop looking for apartments because I live in a walk-​up and there was no way I could be mobile to hunting. If I had known someone was signing the least less than 12-​hours after I saw that apartment, I would have never agreed to see it. These people are unprofessional and have poor communication skills.
