Sean Casey Animal Rescue

One of the best animal shelters in the country! The Staff is very friendly and cooperative. Their animals are under the best supervision and care. They answered all my questions when I went to adopt my cat. Sean Casey is one of the most renowned vets in the state, we need to open more shelters like his.

It’s sad for me to write this review because when I first adopted my cat from Sean Casey this summer I was a big fan of what they are doing. In hindsight I should have seen the signs. I was browsing Pet Finder when I came across a beautiful young cat. I called Sean Casey about her and was told that I probably wouldn’t want her because she didn’t show well. That irritated me and I went straight down there to see her in person. She looked terrified and so sad so I immediately decided to bring her home. I asked about what looked like a foggy eye and Sean assured me that it was nothing, it was just the light. He showed me her paperwork and told me she was perfectly healthy. He even bragged that he got her a more expensive antibiotic when she had a cold. He also warned me that she had a lot trust issues and it would be hard work. I understood and willingly agreed. I was told by Sean and another employee to reach out if I needed anything at all. Two months after bringing my cat home she was still terrified of me and her eye had gotten worst. Because she’s so scared I wasn’t able to catch her to bring her to the vet. I emailed Sean Casey asking for advice, I received no response. A month later I tried again, still no response.
Today I struggled and finally got her to the vet and found out that she has Feline Herpes. The combination of the eye and the previous cold was a dead giveaway to the vet. I’m appalled that I wasn’t told this when I adopted her and the vet that Sean Casey supposedly took her to when she was rescued didn’t notice. Or worse if they did and I just wasn’t told! This is reckless! She had a litter of kittens who were all adopted through Sean Casey whose owners I’m sure weren’t notified either!
For a place that supposedly cares about their animals I am devastated that this is what I learned!

This is a very unique and impressive animal shelter. They don’t just help dogs and cats, but also squirrels, snakes, rats, and pretty much any other type of animal you can name. Any support you give this place, you’re doing a good deed.

Incredible place with incredible people who work tirelessly to help these poor animals. The staff and volunteers do everything they can to ensure the animals are healthy, happy, and well taken care of. I couldn’t be happier or more impressed with Sean and his shelter.

Skye has been retuned to Sean Casey after another biting incident, she bit my friend in the face and blood was coming out.

I really like coming here to pet and play with the animals, their adoption fees aren’t bad at all. It is indeed very cramped and close quarters for the animals but the work they are doing to save these animals is what matters. I will be adopting a cat from here soon :)

Sean Casey animal rescue is a great no kill animal shelter and store in the area. If you can’t keep your baby, talk them here see if they can be re-​homed!

We donate our used newspapers for them to use in the cages. They are always so grateful that you leave and you really feel good about yourself, humanity and life. It’s a pretty great pay-​off for some recycling.

This is an awesome friendly animal shelter. I come here on weekends to volunteer as a dog walker. Sean Casey is a really nice guy and all the volunteers work hard to keep the animals healthy. The dogs are all very sweet and loves being around people. Please help volunteer or donate to this amazing no kill shelter!

Awesome shelter with knowledgeable and friendly staff. I’ve volunteered at a few rescues in NY and Sean Casey is by far my favorite. The volunteer process is no hassle and they treat us very well. I love coming here on my off days and walking dogs :)

Thanks to Sean and his staff we have a beautiful healthy happy four year old Husky named Blue. She is a wonderful addition to our family. They were very helpful with all the paperwork and referrals for vets. They were a bit forceful in what they wanted us to buy for her, but I’m sure they were just looking out for her best interests and every dog is different. Remember to bring cash and a big open heart. Our lives will always be a bit better off because we found them.

Got two kittens from here when they first opened. It’s since grown as a shelter. I go sometimes to walk the dogs and I love what they do here. It’s great to see people take such great care of animals in need and care so much about getting them a good home. Most of the dogs were previously abused or abandoned but every one I have met has been so sweet and deserving of a loving home. I can only have cats where I live but when I move out and can have dogs I will be coming back to adopt one.

Sean Casey Animal Rescue is the best. Buy all of your pet products at their store to support this shelter, too. By paying a little more for what you can find online or at a chain a bit cheaper, you’re helping get countless animals adopted into caring homes – with copious, free training support from DAY 1.
In fact, you can’t leave until you have a very thorough screening and training… which is part of the shelter’s mission to ensure that people who take on the responsibility understand what it’ll take to be the best possible parent/​guardian of their new loved one (and not just a feeder!). Sean himself is one of the most confidently knowledgeable people we’ve ever met, and their staff is just incredible.
On Sundays, when the shelter is brimming with hopeful adopters, the cages are also getting cleaned by loving young volunteers from the neighborhood, inspiring kindness and familiarity for our world’s canine, feline, reptilian, amphibian, and many other species! It’s a great location for learning a little bit about our local biodiversity as well. What an amazing place…

This review is for the Sunset park location only.
I tried to volunteer to walk a dog at the 39^th street location. A young guy on the staff left me standing around outside in the cold waiting while he smoked cigars and socialized. I tried getting his attention again after filling out an application and he told me again to wait. A few young girls standing around did not help either. I understand if he was busy working but that was not the case. I felt awkward, like they were doing me a favor or something. I finally left assuming they must not really need help. It breaks my heart to think people come here wanting to help make these poor dogs day a little better and we are being turned away due to these kids being on a power trip or something. How sad. This place should be managed better. If they ignore people, imagine what they do to animals.

I’m giving four stars solely for the animals, they were all super sweet.
BUT– the dude at the front desk was sooo incredibly rude. I came in this morning wanting to become a volunteer. He didn’t even say hello back to me when I came in, just watched tv on his computer the whole time I was there. When I was admiring a really cute kitten, he walked over, grunted, and slapped a DO NOT PET sign on the cage. To the people who run this shelter– I highly recommend you have a talk with this kid. He definitely deterred me from wanting to volunteer for you guys, which is a huge bummer because those kittens were ridiculously adorable.

I adopted my cat Tony from SCAR about a month ago. I have to pretty much echo everyone else. SCAR is indeed cramped and chaotic but they are doing the best they can with limited resources, and, to their credit they are willing to rescue any animal they can find. This means, that they do have rescues in their care who might not be social enough yet for adoption or who need some work. They’re up front about which animals might require more time than others and as I said when I came there looking for a cat I even ran into a feral cat or two not yet ready for adoption.
I also went through the super quick adoption process which I appreciated. Unfortunately due being cramped in with so many other cats, Tony had picked up an upper respiratory infection within about like a week and a half of being adopted. But during our vet visit, I only had to pay for his meds because of the free vet visit they throw in. Also the staff member I worked with was very upfront that Tony could get this respiratory infection from being around so many cats and that I should look for a runny nose as a sign. So I appreciated being warned by them. Once he jumped in my lap with a snotty nose, I knew what to do.
In all, I had a very positive experience here. I understand some reviewers’ concern about how cramped it is, but as someone who works at a not-​for-​profit myself, I understand the challenges of trying to do the best job possible on a limited budget. SCAR does just that. Their animals are lovely and I encourage anyone looking to adopt to check them out.

We adopted Bear from SCAR in March of this year. I didn’t love everyone that we dealt with but overall, I thought that they were great.
We met a ton of dogs and they were super helpful about listening to what we were looking for and directing us to dogs that might be a good fit. We were smitten with Bear from the first time we met him even though he was very much not what we said we wanted.
Bear was living with a feral pack out in Long Island (You can read his whole story at
) when he was captured — his pack had swum out to Hempstead after Sandy and settled in, but they were part of th eoriginal Rockaway pack.
Bear was only 5 or 6 months old when we brought him home, and was very, very fearful. He was a pretty special case, even for SCAR that gets some pretty special cases. The shelter was really incredibly helpful about coaching us through socailizing him. They were very clear that this was a dog that would take enormous patience (they were right) and Sean was a huge resource even months after we took Bear home.
