The workers here are kind of rude, took me a while to get an order in. She keep looking at me and when I ask if I can order she asked me to wait a while. Next thing i know she took another order from someone behind me. I was about to leave, but I really wanted to try them at least once. They’ve been opened for years and I’ve never tried them. So I stuck around and orders steamed prok dumplings with cabbage. They weren’t the best-looking dumplings. But after my first dumpling I knew why they are still around even with the hostile cashiers they have. The dumplings were really good! It’s just like The Soup Nazi from Seinfeld, terrible service but the food makes it all worthwhile. It had a strong but not overpowering Ginger flavor. The skin was tick compared to other places, but hey dumpling Skins are traditionally supposed to be thick so that they will seal in the juice. Plus these are handmade dumpling skins and its freshly made in house. This was the best plate of dumplings I’ve ever had eating out. Each piece was a little lump of chewy gingery juciy meaty ball of happiness. Now I am hooked.

They really need to get better spoons(seriously-will probably bring my own next time). Dumplings satisfied my craving, soup was flavorful, and I liked the thickness and chewiness of the dough on the most part, although it seemed very thin in some areas and thicker in others and I wish it were more uniform. I do think the meat filling could have been better-I had both the pork and pork & crab, and both seemed to be lacking in both flavor and size. Hadn’t looked it up on Unilocal before coming and was a bit lost when looking for it since the sign is in Chinese – it’s the first one on the left of the food court. And yes, you eat in a food court, which is kind of a turn off for me since I’d rather sit down at a restaurant. A vegetable side dish would have been great too, if it were offered. When you pay they ask for a few extra dollars(one per order) which confused the crap out of me, but they give you back the $$ when you bring back the bamboo baskets. Staff is friendly. Will come back since it’s closer to home than others.

I got the 6pcs pork soup dumpling. There were plenty of soup inside to slurp. Well seasoned, not too salty, just enough flavor. The pork texture was lacking; it was soft and not tender. The sauce that came with it was very acidic. I love sauce in general. especially soup dumpling sauce… but I wouldn’t dip my dumpling in for the second time… AVOID. If you are eating in, they charge you one extra dollar for the bamboo steamer basket and once you are done with it, return the basket to them, and you will get your $ 1 back. One good thing is that tax is included and you save on tips(it is located inside the fei long supermarket food court).

For dumplings in a Chinese food court, these aren’t too shabby. You can see the food being made through the glass which I know amuses my boyfriend. Prices here are fair, $ 3.75 for 6 soup dumplings, they fill you up I usually end up sharing a portion with my boyfriend when I come here. If you’re eating in they take an extra dollar from you which you get back when you back the bamboo basket. Staff here is friendly enough. I don’t know why other reviews say that they’re not western friendly. Most the employees here speak Mandarin so I make my boyfriend order since my Mandarin is atrocious as it’s less embarrassing for me. They seem to like him as much as they could like anyone coming into their establishment so I’m a little confused on the reviews. My only complaint are the spoons they give out, they’re not big enough to hold the soup dumplings.

The start of my dumpling adventure was upsetting. I ordered the mushroom and vegetable shanghai dumplings and it was way too expensive for the quality. I should have ordered the regular mushroom and vegetable dumplings for cheaper! I think it’s the dumpling skin that makes it more expensive and it supposedly has soup in it. I guess only meat eaters get to experience it. The dumplings were bland and mostly full of bok choi. On the bright side, everything they make is fresh and made on the spot! I took a picture of them making the dough and stuffing it.

The xiaolongbao are decent and make a good snack but they’re definitely little grease bombs. You probably won’t want more than one order. Customer service is not gringo friendly. 1 dollar deposit for the dumpling baskets.

Not bad. Xiao long bao’s are the main draw and I echo other reviewers here — the dumplings could use more soup, the wrapper could be thinner, the soup could be richer. One thing to note is if you say you’re dining in(the food court), they’ll serve the dumplings in dimsum baskets but take $ 1 per basket as a deposit — refundable when you return the basket of course.

It’s $ 4.75 now for 6 pork dumplings. I always make it a point to eat these dumplings when I’m in the neighborhood. I feel that they are sufficiently hot, juicy and tasty :) They are a bit difficult to eat though with a small plastic spoon. Definitely would be better to have one of those porcelain soup spoons or even the plastic verison. But heck, I enjoy it so much that I buy them frozen and steam them at home. $ 10 for a bag of 25.

This was my third visit to Shanghai Family Dumpling. The people working here are friendly and do their best to accomodate English language speakers and my very poor mixture of Cantonese and Mandarin. Prices are cheap and the food court they are in is kept pretty clean. Unfortunately the dumplings are short on vegetables and flavoring and the soup dumplings are likewise lacking in flavor. Also the skin on the dumplings is a bit too thick. Yet for the pice, they are an okay deal.

I had high hopes for this place when Fei Long first opened up their food court. Behind the glass plated window, they originally had a small army of people hand making their soup dumplings. It was a spectacle to behold with a curious crowd always looking on to see them being assembled. Now a few years later, that army have trickle down to about 2 to 3 workers at a time. Time as it seems, have let the former onlookers try the soup dumplings that have so caught their interest and for some, including me, it was a let down. Demand have dwindled. Tasting the soup dumplings, you could see why there is less people ordering these now. Devoid of most of the«soup» that usually gush out of every bite of the best of them, these dumplings only cause a dribble. What should be a almost translucent thin skin is also thicker than it should be. These soup dumplings comes in chicken, pork, and pork with crab meat stuffings. 2 stars Giving other parts of the menu a chance, I was not overly found of the spicy noodle soup. A mishmash of flavors and textures, the soup was rather bland, the meat was chewy, and it should not be billed as spicy. 2 stars The Hot and Sour Soup leans more towards the sour side than hot. It’s OK. Could be a bit chunkier but maybe that’s because I might be comparing it to some of the better ones out there. 3 The Shanghai Pan Fried Dumplings is pretty decent. I prefer a slightly thinner skin but that is just me. I also think it could use a bit more herbs to make it more fragrant. At $ 1.50 for 5 as of this review, it cost slightly more than some of it’s competitors for the same amount but it won’t break the bank by any means. 3 stars. You could save 40 cents and make it a small meal by ordering a combo of the hot and sour soup with 4 dumplings for $ 2.50.

Once one of the most visible of the Fei Long food court vendors, when their corner stand was half walled in glass, so the line of workers making dumplings by hand were sure to catch the attention of all passersby. Since then, that wall has been plastered with information and promotional flyers. The Taiwanese food offerings include various small plates, rice and noodles dishes, and soup dumplings. The latter is still one of their most popular items, and come in a few types. Served in their bamboo steamer(with a $ 1 collected to ensure their return) for onsite dining. The pork and crab dumplings are $ 6.75 for an order of six. The first bite was promising, with skin thinner and more pliant than expected. The soup was average; fine but unremarkable. The meat was the low point, lacking in flavor, texture, and ingredients. Crab was essentially absent, making the pork soup dumpling the more economical and sensible order. The separately packaged dipping sauce needs more ginger. Passable, but not very good soup dumplings.

If I could give minus stars, this place would definitely get one. I’m not sure how they got an A rating from the health department, but today this morning I was served YESTERDAY’s dumplings. It was practically ROCK hard skin. I literally could not poke a hole through the dumpling skin. I can’t believe I spend 2.50. WATCHOUT! If they don’t make the dumplings fresh, who knows what else they don’t make fresh, if you catch my drift.

Soup dumpling– crab meat with pork is horrible. Looking at my dumpling on the outside, they looked deflated. Looking at the inside, half was air, is that possible? The dumplings also had alot of crab shell in it. I also had the sweet Chinese cruller and the salty /plain cruller: both were okay. I also had the sticky rice roll with hot dog. The hot dog wasn’t good/cheap quality. I recommend the regular sticky rice roll instead. All in all, stay away from the crab meat soup dumpling.

Save your calories for something better. The soup dumplings here were a total disappointment, especially after recently eating at Nan Xiang in Flushing! Thick skinned, quick to harden, and seriously lacking in the soup department, the only thing these dumplings have got going for them is that they’re fresh and cheap. For much more satisfying meal, grab the $ 3 Bubble Tea/Fried dumpling special from Shanghai Family Dumpling’s sister stand located outside and sit at the food court to eat.

I haven’t tried the shanghai pork dumplings, but from what I heard from my friend– she said it wasn’t that good and it doesn’t have a lot of taste to it. As for me, I tried the shanghai pan fried bun, it wasn’t bad but the dough was a bit thick on the bottom. I’ve also ordered soybean milk, for some reason the price is different from the menu. The soybean milk comes in a container instead of a bottle, which isn’t that convenient when you want to drink it as you walk. When I was drinking the soybean milk, it doesn’t taste like the regular soymilk I used to have. It has more of a bland taste to it. Other than that, I guess it’s not a bad place to go if you just want to have a few dumplings or fried buns.

Mom told me they opened up a food court inside Fei Long Super Market. and i had to check it out. Surprisingly. they have a XLB store… and being the #1XLB fan. i had to try it. For $ 7.you get 6 crab XLB. they are pretty good. The skin is slightly thick and there isnt a lot of soup inside. Which can be a turn-off…Furthermore, the owner got cheaper with the ingredients. The XLBs use to come with Bok Choi, which makes the XLB more tasty… now it doesnt. I guess inflations on the bok choi causes him to stop using it. which changes the flavor of the dumpling a bit.

Nicely priced, but the whole soup dumpling experience fails because they aren’t served with big spoons or much«soup.» Also, if you want fried dumplings, you have to stand in a different line(outside).

Coming from Queens, I’m lucky to have awesome soup dumplings close to home but I wanted to check out the new Fei Long Food Court as I find myself in the area often running errands. The order was made and about 10 minutes later my dumplings were ready to be to devoured. The skins were thicker than I’d prefer and dried out very quickly. The steaming soup inside which is my favorite thing about eating soup dumplings, was barely present, garnering a measly few drops of the stuff as I bit into the skin. The flavor overall from both the soup and filling were seriously lacking and for $ 6.75 I expected more from the crab/pork variety. What I did get was a very unpleasant stray piece of shell that cut into my mouth as I chewed on the filling. The worst part of the whole ordeal was the cheap plastic soup spoon they provide which is barely enough to properly hold a soup dumpling so whatever soup I did manage to squeeze out of those things spilled right onto my shirt instead.

I can honestly say that I had my fair share of soup dumplings and here at Shanghai Family Dumpling, they tasted pretty damn good!!! Located inside the newly opened Fei Long Food Court, they will prepare these juicy dumplings right in front of you. Through a looking glass window, you’ll see about 4 people standing in an assembly line preparing these succulent and delicious delicacies. For $ 3.75, they will serve you 6 fresh pork dumplings in a bamboo steamer. My only complaint is that I wish they had better utensils other then flimsy plastic soup spoons, but otherwise my experience was very satisfying. Additionally, these soup dumplings also come with a free soup on the side and since it’s a food court, you don’t have to tip. Seriously… what more can you ask for other then free food… but of course you know that’s not going to be on the list! ;)

They do traditional style soup dumplings here. It’s no Joe’s Shanghai, but what really is? It’s under $ 4 for an order of 6, and you can get them to go or within the bamboo steam containers to bring back to your table(someone will take them away when you’re done). I wanted to like this place, as it seemed reasonably clean, well-staffed, and you could see the workers make the dumplings through the glass. But it just wasn’t meant to be. The steamed pork dumplings were deflated and tasteless. Really the only thing they had going for them was that they were warm.
