I loved this place. I miss it so much. Now defunct, but I’m pretty sure the owner opened up another joint in Manhattan — please write in if you know what it is — but EVENSO, I must post about it. Brilliant caribbean food — Escovitch fish, candied yams, the best anchar brought by hand directly from Trinidad, best carrot cake in Brooklyn. Jeffrey, Wendy and Fox, why, oh why have you forsaken us? You are missed!!!

For a moment I was on the daily Sunshine’s delivery route. I can become a creature of habit and so I’ve only had a few things. I do like the jerk chicken, however I only get it because every single time I call they are out of the BBQ chicken. I don’t know if that means it’s so good it sells out or if they just don’t make enough(or make it at all). The yams are really good, especially against the rice. I am a big fan of their plaintains, although I think I’ve always just enjoy them. The topper is I really like their carrot cake. Now let there be no mistake this isn’t carrot cake you will dream about later, but it is really pretty good. Another reason I like Sunshine is their portions are pretty big. When I order it for dinner, I have enough leftover for lunch the next day, so it’s like getting two meals in one. I love that… knowing I won’t have to think about what I’m going to eat for lunch the next day– it’s so easy.

In the desolation that is this neighborhood when it comes to food options, I was really hoping that Sunshine would be a ray of light in my quest for some reliable grub. Let’s see how it fared. The nondescript interior seemed to promise a no-fuss food experience. In a nice way. Since all the items were already cooked[1], my order was prepared in no time. I had the oxtail stew with candied yams and spinach. The meat was tasty and coming off the bone, but the flavor was a bit bland. The spinach were good, while the yams were way too sweet. I also got the dumpling special, which basically was a large flour dough with no filling; a bit chewy and rather heavy, without much taste. Not very good. Overall, I felt that this dish was not worth the $ 10 I paid. The corn bread, on the other hand, was delicious: sweet, light, and fluffy, I could have eaten a couple of pounds of it. In fact, this was the best part of the meal. Alas, corn bread by itself couldn’t really save this meal. The menu seems to have way more breakfast items than main courses. Perhaps breakfast is what is good here. 2.5 stars. I don’t think I’ll be back, though. Most main courses[2] are $ 6 – 7 for lunch, and two bucks more for dinner. Free delivery(minimum $ 10). — — — — — — — — — — — — — — - [1] Perhaps that’s why my dish was not that great, since the various components were likely cooked early in the day, but what can you do? I wanted dinner. [2] Main courses come with rice, one side, and plantains for lunch, and two sides and plantains for dinner.

We just stumbled up on this place tonight looking for an Ital restaurant on Nostrand. The food was delicious, the people were friendly, and it had a cute ambiance. All at a good price. I had the curry shrimp with calliloo and baggi, all delicious, the calliloo ad baggi were especially noteworthy. My girlfriend had the oxtail, which was very tasty and the meat just fell off the bone in a delicious way.

breakfast special. breakfast special. it was like two bucks or something for two eggs and coffee and toast. bring a travel mug, though, cause they only have styrofoam cups. i also noticed that the giant red velvet cake was screaming my name and it, in stark contrast to the breakfast special, is not cheap. she charged me $ 6 a slice, which i thought was pretty excessive. it was delicious, but ludicrously priced. very friendly but a little wonky. i’ll definitely be back for breakfast.
