The Brick Theater

If you want to be surprised, go this small theater in Williamsburg. One need to have tickets since it is a very intimate venue. The play wasn’t my cup of tea, but it was performed excellently! I saw «REREAD Another»

Finally got my boyfriend to stop playing his online games to come to Game Play with me at The Brick last night and he LOVED it! We both did, and we were talking the whole car ride home about coming back! Can’t wait to see the other performances. The host was especially hilarious, I forget his name, Andy_​_​_​, who looks like Rick Moranis! LOL Might go see his stand-​up or whatever he does! GREAT TIMES!

I didn’t know what to expect when I walked into The Brick for a recent performance. The first thing I saw were the condoms readily available as I checked in, along with a useful pamphlet on How to Use a Condom (complete with drawings), both of which I hope to need someday. (Already, this was going well.)
The theater itself is tiny, and without any amenities. The seats are just chairs lined up on risers. There is neither a concession stand, nor a bar. There IS a tiny little bathroom with a sign that says «No flushing during performance» (the theater is that small), but no sink to wash your hands. Which isn’t a big deal for me because… well, look at me: proper hygiene isn’t among my priorities.
Despite all this (or perhaps because of it), I kind of love it. It’s so unabashedly low-​budget, and the performance was so brazenly ridiculous. Admittedly, I’ve only attended the one show at The Brick (so far), so I find it a bit hard to separate the venue from the performance. However, if Flying Snakes in 3D is any indication, this tiny little theater books thought-​provoking, amusing, outlandish, avant-​garde, FUN productions. They don’t follow any rules, and there’s something extremely enjoyable about seeing other people enjoy themselves so much on stage.
Be warned: This isn’t Broadway. Don’t come in expecting any traditional sort of theater. I mean, I’ve never pelted performers with rubber snakes before. At least not during the performance, and at their behest. If you do take a chance on The Brick, as you should, I would just go in with an open mind, prepared to see a show unlike any you’ve seen previously. Which I think is a good thing.

A theater in Williamsburg… Who knew? The Brick Theater seems hidden off the Lorimer & Metropolitan stop. When I went to go see a show, I was a bit lost and couldn’t find it. Everything on that block looks the same. When I took out my magnifying glass I saw the entrance to go to the theater.
The place is small, but with performances it can be more intimate. The actors can have more eye contact with you and it feels like your getting a private performance. I would definitely come back and see what performances they have in the future.

I just got back from the Brick after seeing Flying Snakes in 3D (courtesy of Unilocal.) I have never driven to Brooklyn (on purpose) and was very happy The Brick was easy to find on the corner of Metropolitan and Lorimer. I was able to find non-​metered street parking very quickly only about a block away.
Brooklyn is such a cute place. The whole area was bustling with people despite the nasty weather. There were so many places I wish I had time to poke my head into.
Anyway, the address is 575 BUT it seemed 575 was like a block long. I saw three doors with that number. Which magical door should I choose? Well, it is left of the bar called Jr and Son, two doors down.
It is small inside. It had about 5 – 6 rows of chairs in front of a stage and video screen. Placed on every chair in the theater, was a rubber snake. Yay we were going to be part of an interactive show. Well, I have never seen a show quite like this before… but I was glad I was able to see a show here and would show up in the rain again in a heart beat!

Ahhh the brick. You are conveniently right off the train, and you have such silly and fun community theatre shows. I have seen two here (Chemistry and Five Things), and enjoyed both quite a bit. I will be back!
Note — if you’re going here, be sure you can get tickets. It’s a tiny little theatre with very limited seating. But you’ll be right up front for a fun show!

The theatre here is new, edgy, and innovative, and the artists are always pushing the envelope. I am continually amazed. You will never be bored.

Fantastic theater for under $ 25? You bet.
You could spend $ 50-​$ 150 on a Broadway show which has a 75% chance of being something you’ve already seen, poorly re-​warmed and poorly performed. Or you could spend a fraction of that on some truly original work.
An innovative, intelligent, small theater. The work produced here is amongst some of the most trend setting, edge cutting, and experimental to be found in NYC, the U.S., and the world at large. And even better, if you show up to one of the last shows on a Friday or Saturday night, there is almost guaranteed to be a friendly and lively after party thrown in the theater space itself, hosted by the cast and crew.
Where else are you going to see my own drunkenly performed karaōke versions of Journey, full length theater pieces about text based adventure gaming, and burlesque numbers performed by gorgeous men and women dressed up as Seven of Nine from Star Trek and Doctor Manhattan respectively, all under one roof? This sort of thing is simply not being done anywhere else. Show up or run the risk of being left in the dust of theater history.
A few notes on the space. It only seats in the range of 40 – 50, so purchase your tickets in advance. If a show is popular, it *will* sell out. If you’d like to be part of the onstage fun, sit in the front row. The performers are on the same level as the first row of seats, and are frequently pulled up into performances. If you’re more of an onlooker, head toward the seats at the back.

The Brick is a little blackbox, but instead of being totally black, has a brick wall. (Hence the title) It features new works that are edgy and low budget. The seating is limited, which makes the evening very intimate. This is a great place to see live theater if you interested in work that showcases talent and writing, and not spectacle. Note: Even if you buy tickets in advance, seating is still festival style (first come first serve), so you should get there early.

This quirky little brick theater hosted a refreshingly and mind bendingly witty «Theater of the Arcade». I am now dying to see what’s next!

It’s great that there is still space for independent artists. The Brick Theater’s taste is perverse, dark, and fun. We saw a fantastic production of Notes From the Underground that was lit by candlelight with the actors all around you really enveloping you in the performance. And we are going back to see A Brief History of Murder (which is a fun idea of interweaving two short plays for a full day’s fun) – turns out the first show was so bad, we didn’t stay for the second. Ticket prices are reasonable and it’s a great atmosphere. Not to mention they do film stuff and fundraisers (for themselves and worthy events like the situation in Haiti). The shows are hit or miss, but affordable so usually worth the gamble.
It is a bit small and maybe not so airy, as some Unilocalers have pointed out, but I think it adds to the charm and cool hole-​in-​the-​wall atmosphere.
Thanks Brick for putting on interesting shows that might not normally have a home anywhere else.

The Brick is a small theatre space on Williamsburg’s rapidly gentrifying Metropolitan Ave, mostly featuring short runs of independent shows, as well as working as a festival space. Tickets are usually an affordable $ 10. As a small, poorly ventilated space, the Brick distinguishes itself from other similar theatres in actually recognizing this shortcoming, leaving motorized fans running as well as loaning out personal fans.
