The Sun Room

Hi, I’m sorry to hear you closed. I have (had) a package at this salon and had been a customer for a couple years. I haven’t been in a couple months but wanted to inquire about getting refunded for the sessions I purchased but wasn’t able to use. I had recently moved and was unaware the location closed. I was never notified about the location closing and disappointed to find out they hadn’t refunded customers. If someone could please contact me about this, I would really appreciate it. Thank you! I wanted to touch up my tan a little before a trip to Miami, so I opted to try out The Sun Room. I tan regularly at the beach in the summer, and while I’m not a novice when it comes to indoor tanning, I admit it has been awhile since I last ventured into a tanning salon.
With this in mind, I went on a Saturday morning to The Sun Room, where I was met by a nice girl who reviewed all the tanning bed options with me, and worked with me to find the right choice for my needs. She even walked me to the room itself and went over how the machine worked, to which I paid great attention. She asked me if I needed any suntan lotion, but I declined and told her that I had brought my own. (This detail is highly important.). She simply said «OK,» left the room, and I went about my business of getting a tan.
The rooms were clean, the machinery worked to my liking, and — all in all — my first experience at The Sun Room was a success. So much, in fact, that I decided to go again for another round a week later.
This is where everything went downhill — really fast.
Upon my second visit, I was greeted at the desk by the woman who is featured in the photos here on Unilocal.It’s my assumption that she is the owner.
I gave this woman my name, and suddenly she bursts out, «Oh, Daniel! You’re the one! You ruined my room last weekend with a spray lotion, and all the finishing has been stripped from the room! Didn’t you see the signs everywhere not to use spray lotions???»
Here’s where I’ll pause this story for a second: first off, no — I did not see a single sign indicating not to use spray lotions in the dressing room areas. Doesn’t mean they’re not there, it simply just means that I didn’t see them.
Also, remember when I said earlier that it had been a long while since visiting a tanning salon? Well, I didn’t know that using a spray lotion was a big no-​no. So I get it — mea culpa. I messed up. But you would think upon my first visit, when I mentioned that I brought my own lotion, that the girl I dealt with at the time would have said, «Hey, since you’re new to this, I should tell you that you can’t…» You get the picture.
So, back to the owner…
She then proceeds to grill me on what I was spraying (you know, like it was Agent Orange or something). I said, «Miss, I’m really sorry, but it was just some SPF 50 spray. I honestly didn’t know that a spray lotion couldn’t be used in the dressing room.»
Now, this is where it goes from bad to worse.
«SPF 50?» she says.
«Yeah, why?» I say.
«You only went in there for 9 minutes and you’re using an SPF 50?» she says to me in a snide tone. «Why not just do 6 minutes and not use any lotion?»
«Well, I prefer to use some kind of protection, I’d rather not get a bad burn.» I say (what nerve of me… not wanting to burn).
«But that’s how you tan!» she proclaims, «I mean, did you get anything from that 9 minutes?», this time more snide then the last.
It was at this point that I said, «You know what? I think I’ll see you later,» and I turned and walked right out the door — never to return again.
So here’s the thing — I made a mistake with the spray lotion. And yeah, maybe SPF 50 is excessive for some. Judge me all you want, I care not a single iota.
But here’s the real question when it comes to The Sun Room: do you as a customer want to be ridiculed and mocked by the owner of a business where you’re paying for a service? Do you want to be scolded like an 8 year old for something that you genuinely had no clue was not permitted (and wasn’t informed by the staff was not permitted)?
The answer is no, you don’t.
And here’s the funny part — I had every intention of buying a package deal when I went back that second time. The Sun Room could have easily had a customer for life, since I live in the neighborhood and enjoy a tanned complexion.
But here’s what’s not going to happen — aside from me never going to The Sun Room ever again. I’m not going to give my time, money, and patronage to a business owner who doesn’t even have the most remote concept of customer service — who mocks their customers when they make a mistake, and THEN feels compelled to lecture someone on what they choose to rub on their own skin.
So, if you find yourself in need of a quick tan, save your money — and your dignity — and cross The Sun Room off your list of options.

tl;dr version — the woman at the desk was pleasant; the booth was scarily noisy, the booths are not entirely private as they are open at the top, and I got a bad burn.
I went to The Sun Room this week and didn’t have the best experience, unfortunately. Having said that, the woman at the front desk was pleasant and helpful and explained the different kinds of tanning (standing up or laying down; though I didn’t fully understand the options for a UVA/​UVB booth versus either a UVA or a UVB booth). She also explained the option for buying individual sessions versus getting a discount by buying 5 sessions. (I, unfortunately, bought 5 sessions.)
I told her I had been to a tanning salon once years ago and that I burn easily. She suggested that I use the booth for 7 – 8 minutes and asked me if I wanted to use sunscreen. I declined, thinking that she was the expert and was probably suggesting a conservative amount of time in the booth (so it’s partly my fault for not questioning the amount of time she suggested or asking a follow-​up question about using sunscreen). She took me to the booth, explained how to start the session (just click the «start» button) and showed me how to raise/​lower the music volume.
When I got into the booth and pressed, «start,» the machines was jarringly noisy. Like noisy in a way that made me feel like the booth was defective and that I might be in danger and should stop the session. It was a combination of a loud fan and a mechanical noise. I calmed myself down and stayed in the booth. At one point during my session, my stomach all of a sudden felt odd — not sure if it was related to the booth.
I pondered a couple of times stopping the session a minute or two early but did not. I went home and noticed 2 – 3 hours later that I was in pain in several areas of my body. When I looked in the mirror, I had very red burns on the backs of my legs, the sides of my stomach and my left arm. It was weird that my right arm was not burned as I held both arms the same way. It made me wonder if one side of the machine runs «hotter» than the other.

After living in New York and South Florida I have been to many tanning salons. The Sun Room has to be one of my favorites. I cannot say that I have ever had a bad experience here. The staff is so friendly, welcoming, and knowledgable about there products. it’s also the cleanest salon that I have ever been to, and the prices are great!
I would highly recommend going here to get the perfect tan; especially since outdoor tanning weather is coming to an end.

I had never had a spray tan before and I was had travelled to nyc for a wedding, with only one evening to get a spray tan. When I called about coming in the receptionist neglecting to tell me all the things I had to do before hand… Resulting in me not being able to have this done !!!
Rubbish !!!

As summer comes to an end, I still need maintain my tan for my wedding in November. They are so sweet and showed me the different levels of tanning and what options is best for my needs. Its very clean and the prices are great.
Very happy with The Sun Room.
