Our postpartum doulas are fully trained and certified through DONA International. We offer compassionate and respectful in-​home support tailored to meet each individual family’s needs. This may include: instruction and assistance in all areas of baby care (breastfeeding, soothing, babywearing, etc.); household help to give the birth mother time to recuperate, as well as give the family opportunity to bond with their new baby (light housekeeping, light meal preparation, quick errands, etc.); emotional support as the family adjusts to their changing circumstances, encouraging parents to develop their own parenting styles and to trust their own instincts, leaving them energized with knowledge and confidence.

Doris Palmieri and Heather Mullen became interested in helping families and their new babies ease into their new lives together. They each trained toward certification as postpartum doulas through DONA International and together formed the cooperative Urban Family Doula, which serves families in New York City and surrounding areas. They launched a website and blog to further share relevant information: parenting and baby care issues; book and product reviews; recommendations for local resources and family events; news about their services. Aside from doing the in-​home postpartum doula work they’re immensely enjoying, Doris and Heather plan to offer workshops and other services in the future.
