Specialties

Gurnet Trading Co. is a small family owned and operated seafood market and takeout restaurant. We specialize in providing fresh and local seafood.

As a wholesale lobster dealer, the lobsters in our store are direct from the fishermen, cutting out middleman expenses and transit time. The only to get fresher lobsters is to catch it yourself.

Our scallops are hand harvested by our owner. In-​season (Dec-​Mar) Brian makes the plunge into the icy Maine waters to dive for scallops. His product is in the store that afternoon and whatever isn’t sold fresh within two days is packaged and frozen to be enjoyed in the off-​season. Our diver scallops are one of our most popular products.

Our Wild Belon Oysters and Wild Mussels are also harvested by our owner.

Our clams are procured direct from local diggers.

Many of the local fishermen have us on speed dial and will give us a call if they have caught something special (halibut, swordfish, shark).

We take great pride in providing fresh Maine seafood prepared using traditional family recipes.

History

Established in 2003.

While attending college at Maine Maritime Academy in the early ‘80s, our owner (Brian) began diving for scallops. 10 years later, he quit his day job and began diving full time for both scallops and sea urchins. In the ‘90s, the sea urchin industry was booming, with fishermen making more than $ 1,000 a day. With the growth of the industry, Brian and his wife (Julie) also expanded to become a successful urchin buying station, thus was born Mill Ledge Seafood.

As the urchin industry began to collapse in the early 2000s, Brian began to turn his urchin buying station into a lobster wharf. At this time Brian and Julie were looking towards the future and for ways to sell Brian’s lobsters and scallops (he had been selling them door to door for more than 10 years). They made the insane decision to buy an old junk yard and open a seafood market. Everyone thought they were crazy, but with a little luck and a lot of hard work they created Gurnet Trading Co., which has grown stronger every year.

I am the daughter of Gurnet Trading’s owners (Brian and Julie). Growing up the daughter of a fisherman and working in the family business until I graduated college, I swore up and down I would get a «real» job and never again be associated with the family business.

Well, I lied. Family has a funny way of sucking you back in. While my role at Gurnet Trading Co. is not huge, I am the person you will likely deal with if you contact our website, Facebook page, or place a shipping order. My big fancy title is Online Distribution Manager.

Legitimately the best lobster roll you will find. It’s out of this world. Everything about it is perfect. The lobster is abundant, just the right amount of mayo, and a perfectly toasted roll. If I’m anywhere within 30 miles of this spot, it’s a must-​stop. Doesn’t get any fresher. Service is wonderful as well. Family operated and great people always behind the counter.
Side note: The fried clam roll is dynamite as well.

A good little market where you can buy the seafood there and take out or have them cook it for you right there. Nothing fancy — at all — but you can have a beer and sit at a little table and leave the mess right there.

Came here for lunch with a friend after visiting Orr’s Island & Bailey Island and stopped on our way back through Harpswell. It’s a tiny place with great local Maine ambiance in that it’s kitschy, crowded with stuff and has a lot of things going on at once. Restaurant — though it’s more of a takeout place that just happens to have seating. Fresh seafood market with a small but great looking selection. We ordered fried lobster tail, lobster stew, the haddock plate special and an extra order of fries. All delicious, straightforward and incredibly fresh, with homemade tartar and cocktail sauce. The counter staff were friendly but not overly so, and it was pretty busy for 2:30 on a winter day. Prices were totally reasonable for what you get, and be prepared to leave smelling like deep fried seafood. Overall, we loved it.

Harpswell, ME
A lovely local seafood place, set right on the costal drive of harpswell. This place is loaded with fresh raw seafood for sale including clams, mussels, scallops and lots of different fish,. Fresh seafood fried and ready to order, scallop baskets, fried fish basket, lobster rolls, clam cake and even crab rangoon. Live Lobsters crawling around and waiting for that special person to say «I’ll take that one».
It doesn’t get fresher than this, scooping up lots from their backyard.

I picked up a pint of the Clam Chowder for my Mom’s birthday and she said it was the best she’s ever had (and believe me she’s picky about her clams)! She particularly loved that they use whole belly clams. So Thank You for making it such a special day.

Great local tourist vibe. Reminds me of key west. Fried food is not over the top fried.
Shells in the crab cake and chowder! Unbelievable. Must have been a fluke? Right?
Swordfish was great but small portions.
Clam and seafood chowders are thin cream base with lots of potatoes and meat. If your looking for thick chowder, try somewhere else.

2 spots for eating outside. One in the parking lot and another down the hill away from the cars/​road.
They have Sierra Nevada! And other beers, singles/​sixes. I only saw 1 bottle of white wine available.

Wow, did the $ 30 for 5 lbs of lobster special. All i can say is wow, the best. Great Tasting lobster, even the juice that was inside, tasted awesome. Very tender, tasty, soft shells, no crab crackers or picks needed all the meat came out clean.
We ended up taking the bundles back to the Days Inn and chowed down in the Lobby. Just pure Lobster Joy. We had a trash can right next to us, and my coworker and I went to Lobster town. They just take the bundles in a net (about 4 to 5 lobsters) and place them in a bag fresh from the steamers right to you for your dining experience…
We had lobster juices spray all over the breakfast lobby at Days Inn, we’ll see how the place smells tomorrow for breakfast. We’ll both look at each other and laugh, if it smells like lobster… LOL.
We came in from California and working at BIW for a couple of weeks, and found this place doing a Unilocal search on Lobster. We first ate at the Taste of Maine, $ 25 for a Lobster Roll, not bad, but you pay for the ambiance.
We gave up the ambiance and just pure great lobster at a great price. Thank You Unilocal

This place is great for fresh seafood. The experience here is unlike any other. The staff is friendly and made our vacation easier. We were able to place our order for pick up and it was ready in 25 minutes. The lobster rolls are fresh and tasty and cheaper than downtown Portland. We had them steam our lobster and clams every time we ordered it and it was delicious but there is a price for steaming. The shrimp and scallops are very fresh as was the salmon. This place is worth checking out if you are within the area and certainly worth the drive.

More of a 3.5 than a 4, really.
Fried clams were very good, as was the lobster stew. These are the draw, in my mind.
However, the french fries and onion rings were really undistinguished. Not worth ordering as part of your meal, not worth wasting calories on.
Stick to the fried clams and lobster stew, and it’s worth the trip (can’t vouch for the other main items, but these were good (not cheap, though)).

The food is good but it took so long for them to prepare. The kitchen just doesn’t seem to operate very efficiently. We waited over 30 minutes for our lobster rolls and seeing as how all that needed to be done was toast the buns, this was sort of maddening.

A small, hole in the wall place with a lot of local charm. Sells uncooked fish in addition to being a seafood featuring restaurant.
Prices are good and food is very fresh (we even saw local clam diggers dropping off their haul in the afternoon). A small room with a few indoor tables and a couple of tables in the main part of the building. There is more seating outside and picnic tables that are behind a fence.

This place was absolutely delicious! I imagine on a busy day, it’s an absolute zoo because of it’s small size, but I’d probably sit in my car and wait because the lobster rolls were that good. We ordered two lobster rolls, a clam roll, a scallop roll and a side of onion rings, along with two bottled lemonades and it came to about $ 50 — which might seem a little pricey, but we were stuffed when we left. The lobster was tender, sweet and juicy and not overly dressed — served in a perfectly griddled hot dog roll. The scallops and clams were excellent, as well. As for the onion rings — I usually don’t care for onion rings, but I gave these a shot and they were SO good! Perfectly battered and fried. The woman at the counter wasn’t glowing and smiley — but she’s a counter clerk in a roadside seafood joint in Brunswick — what do people expect? She wasn’t rude at all, just not bubbling with excitement. She suggested next time we come that we order the fried seafood plate (with fries and slaw) and a lobster roll and just share everything because it’s cheaper than what we did and it’s still a massive amount of food. I saw someone else eating the seafood plate and it was certainly large. You know those gray cardboard bowls that you get french fries in at a county fair? The ones that look kind of like a dog food bowl? Yeah… it’s served in one of those — MOUNDED over the top.
We will definitely make this a regular lobster roll spot on our way to and from Bailey Island every year.

This place is very overrated the ladies were very rude the lobster where a rip off and not that good. The fried clams where $ 16 for a little order. The chowder was super buttery. And worst off all it’s on a very busy street.

This is a hidden gem of Brunswick. A true lobster/​clam shack and also a great fish market. They will cater lobster bakes as well. I can’t hit Casco Bay any more without at least one visit to Gurnet. Generous servings of extremely fresh clams and fish. Fried just right. Make the side trip down RT 24 from Cooks Corner if your passing through. You won’t regret it! Chowder is excellent too.

Love this place. We stumbled upon Gurnet’s a couple of summers ago when looking for a place to get fresh-​off-​the-​boat lobsters. Their prices usually can’t be beat — a little-​known secret if you get there early enough is to go for the culls (one-​clawed lobsters). Ringing in at around $ 3.99 a pound, you can’t do any better anywhere else!
This past vacation we also brought back to our rental house a quart of their house-​made clam chowder, made with whole-​belly steamer clams. Holy moly. Unbelievably good. So flavorful, not too heavy — we were all blown away. Definitely worth a stop if you find yourself in the vicinity.
