Much friendlier server who also speaks English fluently. A much better start than previous visits. I’ll be ordering sullangtang so hopefully it’ll be tasty on a wintry, snowy day. Food was good and service is much improved.

Haven’t been here in a while, even though I live close to it. Ordered out from the lunch menu that’s like $ 1 cheaper per meal. Most Korean restaurants don’t give the cheaper lunch special prices for take out. Shared a yuk gae jang(spicy beef soup), soon dobu(soft tofu soup), and oo guh gee guk(beef and rehydrated spinach stem soup). Liked the yuk gae jang(spicy beef soup) the best. They gave a good amount of side dishes. I remember not being impressed with the food here, but my mom said that its one of the better ones and she would go more often if it was cheaper. It is wheelchair accessible I’m not sure about the restroom.

This is such an awesome authentic Korean BBQ place to eat! My friend and I tried this place and we were very impressed! We weren’t expecting too much for on this place because of the stars given but I then read that they changed management which was a great thing! The mandu are all homemade and huge! We had the BBQ for the main dish. The meat/BBQ tasted so good and very tender. The marination is spot on with the spice and sweetness. We both also had the small water naengmyun and we both agreed that that was the best we’ve ever had! I’m a big fan of naengmyun and I was very satisfied with theirs. They’ve really out done themselves. The new manager and owners are very nice. Even their servers are very friendly. They speak fluent English as well. The atmosphere is very homey with catchy Korean music. We’re both definitely coming back and telling our friends and family about this place as well!

We were in the burbs looking for some asian food to fulfill our cravings and settled on this Korean place, which turned out to be a good choice! We started with the meat dumplings. I’m usually a sucker for dumplings even though most of the time they’re frozen ones from H-Mart or something, but to our surprise, these were house made and soo sooo big! They were like 2x fuller than regular dumplings and had so many ingredients — noodles, mushrooms, spices, pork — I can’t even begin to describe! Definitely could have made this my meal! We also got a seafood pancake, which was filled with a lot of chunks of shrimp, octopus and veggies– a nice compliment to our entrees. Among four of us, we had a beef dolsot bibimbap, seafood dolsot bibimbap, bulgogi and pork bulgogi. The bibimbaps were on point– usually with the dolsot bibimbap, the first layer of rice is super crispy then after you mix it around that’s it, but somehow these were extra hot and continued to crisp more rice as you stirred! The bulgogis were tender and nicely marinated. What I liked best about it is that the order came with glass noodles, mushrooms and green onion, rather than strictly meat like most Korean restaurants. They also included a banchan of thinly sliced pickled radish that was a wrap for the bulgogi– it made each bite really refreshing and a nice crunchiness. There were some banchans that I had never seen before– a potato one(super light), jalapeños(pickled and covered in red sauce but not actually spicy), eggplant, and I think it was like a lightly tempura zucchini(my fav one!). This place was a nice surprise! I’ll be back whenever I’m in the burbs!

I came here with my friends the other night looking for some good Korean bbq and all I have to say is AMAZING. Their meat is surprisingly juicy and well marinated. The side dishes(which includes some tasty potatoes, seriously try them) and rice supplemented the bbq really well. My friend always orders the kimchi sangyupsal(marinated pork with kimchi) when he goes to Korean restaurants and he firmly believes that Kum Kang San makes it the best. Oh yeah, the dumplings are handmade and unbelievably delicious. The service here was really nice! They had a positive attitude(unlike most Korean restaurants) and they are able to speak English. Apparently they have new management so I think the previous reviews are a tad old. Overall, this place is great for both lunch and dinner. Highly recommended.

Delicious. Having lived in California, I came to Kum Kang San for Korean barbecue with the expectation that it’d be solid food, okay service, but nothing to write home about. I was very pleasantly surprised. The negative reviews on Unilocal are primarily for the previous management. The new management has their ish together. The kalbi was marinated perfectly — not too much flavor, not too little, and super juicy. The ban chan was delicious and all made from scratch(I verified this with the restaurant owner, but honestly you can just tell.) They also offered lettuce and radish as «wrappings» for the cooked meat, which I had not seen before(the radish). Service was great and attentive. I felt like I was in someone’s personal kitchen being fed homemade Korean food! And trust me, I know my kalbi. Highly recommended — I’m going to take advantage of it every time I’m in town :)

Service: as expected from any authentic Asian restaurant; less about hospitality. More about efficiency. Atmosphere: clean with comfortable lighting. Good for a chill lunch or dinner Food: Dumplings/Mandu: hot. Fresh. You know they make these on spot. Very flavorful Seafood soup: a surprisingly spicy(jalapeño) stew with perfect udon-like noodles, but flatter. Shrimp, squid, and large clams. Clears your sinuses. Carries a kick. Perfect when you want Asian soul food with a kick. I’m usually not in this area. Nothin to write home about. It just feels like Korean food done right

My mom discovered this place a long time ago, and it’s her favorite korean place in the neighborhood because of its price and distance. When we first came into the restaurant, it seemed pretty crowded for a thursday lunch, and there was only one waitress serving. There are some private booths inside for larger parties or intimate gatherings. From the organization of the restaurant and the people who work there you can tell it’s a family restaurant. The lady welcomed us warmly and showed us our table. We’ve been here a couple of times before so we knew what we wanted to order, but there were too many people at the moment so the lady was busy bringing out the food and cleaning the tables. We didn’t get to order until 20 minutes later. She came to us and asked us what we wanted. The food came out about 10 minutes after the order, so that made up for the delay I guess. We ordered the Bulgogi, soft tofu seafood soup, kimchi dumpling, and the seafood noodle soup. All of the dishes were okay-quality, but they don’t really have a wow factor. My favorite, nonetheless, is the kimchi dumpling. I’m a big fan of any kind of dumplings, and I love kimchi, so this one really does the trick! I’m not sure if it’s an authentic korean dish, but I love the sourness and spiciness of the kimchi pairing with the ground pork. Such a flavorful and juicy bite every time! All the other items are just mediocre. I think they’re just typical dishes you expect at a typical korean restaurant. Nothing special really. I would come here again if I’m craving for Korean food though!

Their best dishes are the kimchee dumplings and cold noodles both in the broth and not. Bibimpap and yook kye jang(spicy beef soup) are also worth having. For BBQ you can get much better for about the same price at San Soo Gab San in Morton Grove or 92Town. If you need something from the waitress, push the call button beside your table. And when its time to pay, just go up to the counter to check out rather than waiting for the bill. Service quality is old school which means erratic and often inattentive.

Very inconsistent food. First time I have ever been in a Korean restaurant where serving old hardened rice was the norm. It’s rice, the staple of the Asian diet. This is the second bad experience in so many weeks. Service was good until new set of servers started. I can see why previous servers left. Koreans are all about customer service… not this place. Reflection of the new owners?

This restaurant is under new management with friendly owners and staff. They finally hired servers who are able to speak English fluently so that they can explain the menu to non-English speaking customers. The quality of food has drastically improved and the wait time has been reduced. You can tell the owners genuinely care about their guests and that they leave full and satisfied! I recommend those who gave it a negative review to give it another shot!

As this was my first time with Korean food, I cannot compare to other similar places but I ordered the BBQ beef and it was awesome. The meat was delicious. I was a bit worried as I have a weak stomach but with all the fresh veggies and meat cooked In front of you I had no issues at all. Everything was very fresh and just the right amount of «kick». Lots of food and service was very good! Recommend.

This is a convenient option for proximity but it is far from being a great option unless you keep it simple like bi bim bap. Otherwise be prepared for fatty meats and subpar banchans. What irks me most is that I’m half Korean(though don’t look Korean) and you would think I was speaking Greek. Ordering in Korean confused the staff. They repeated back in English and then I had to eventually point to the menu. I have gone to this restaurant with my Korean mother where the service was quite different. Westerns be forewarned. Also my Korean cooking at home barely rivals my mother’s but I would have faired better at home. The search for good Korean continues…

First, I’m amazed at people whining about service at Korean Restaurants. Usually, they don’t speak English well. And people will post 2 stars, say the food was great, but service sucked. We had lunch here today and it was lovely. The service was great, and the food was even better. We had bibimbop, bulgogi bbq, spicy beef soup, Naengmyeon, which is a phenomenal cold noodle soup. The panchun was almost forgotten. Every minute of the lunch was perfect! We will be back!

We came here for Father’s Day to try their famous naengmyung(cold buckwheat noodles). Let me preface the rest of this review by saying that the reason why I even give this restaurant any stars at all is because their naengmyung is indeed freaking good. Moving on, their service was one of the most horrible restaurant experiences I have had. We ordered three orders of the naengmyun, one korean stew, and an order of short ribs(galbi). We asked for them to cook the galbi in the kitchen and bring it out rather than cooking it ourselves. The restaurant wasn’t even busy but the service took FOREVER. After waiting ages for our food and seeing that other tables that had been seated after us were all eating, we asked where our order went. Our waitress said that they had made a mistake on our order and had to remake everything. No apologies. Finally, the short ribs came out first. This $ 30 dish came out as approximately ten tiny and thin pieces of beef that were ALL overcooked and burnt. When my mom pointed this out to a waitress, she stared at the dish, let out an exasperated sigh, and stomped into the kitchen. No apologies, NOTHING. I was speechless at how she handled the situation. After almost an hour of waiting, our noodles finally came out. Again, no apologies. Waitress just throws everything on the table and walks away silently. Hey staffers, here’s a term you might find useful for your business: CUSTOMERSERVICE. I’m so disappointed, yet my tastebuds are pleading me to forgive them because their naengmyung is just so good.

Let me preface this review by saying that I have never been one to crave cold noodles on a hot summer day. If I want something cold on a hot summer day, I’d rather eat ice cream or fro-yo than eat cold noodles. But that’s just me. All my friends and family swear that this is the best place to get nengmyun(the cold noodles I mentioned before). If this is the best place to get nengmyun, it only reconfirms the belief that nengmyun just isn’t that good. The noodles are so hard to chew through and just come all lumped together. The broth has a little bit of flavor but it’s nothing that wows you On top of all of this, the service is awful if you aren’t 30+ years of age. The fact that my group of friends, whom are all in the mid-twenties, were treated like garbage didn’t factor into my rating(or else they would have gotten –1 star), but I just thought I’d let you young Koreans know to avoid this place unless you really crave some mediocre cold noodles.

I came here for their special naeng myun which is made with arrowroot and not buckwheat as most Korean restaurants have. I’ve had arrow root noodles before and really enjoyed it and I’ve been trying to find it here and my mom told me about this place has it. I’ve been talking this place up to my sis and we got a shot to go when my sis had time for lunch. It’s a long way off for some arrow root but eventually after heading out there it seemed like any other Korean restaurant. The menu did read that their naeng-myun is special. I got the spicy mixed variety, while my sister got the mul naeng-myun, the beef broth soup. In addition we also got their kimchi-pork mandu. The mandu was pretty good, piping hot that we had to wait for it to cool down a little. The noodles were good, but didn’t seem to stand out like the arrowroot noodles I’ve had before. A good bowl, but nothing stand-out. My sister wondered why I was making such a huge fuss about the different noodles when there was no difference for her. Service wise it was typical Korean place, with people calling out for more water or side dishes or what not, it’s basically how Korean restaurants work so it’s not a point of friction for me. I had no issues with it. A decent Korean restaurant but not worth driving out of the way for.
