Protek Color Lab

I love Protek! As a wedding photographer I take pride in my albums that I deliver to my clients and I have yet to find another lab that matches their quality and turn around time. I refer Protek to everyone I konw looking for a great local lab!

I needed to get a few hundred negatives scanned and digitized. Prior to coming to Protek, I tried a couple of different local photo developing places that cater to the general public (i.e. 1 hr photo-​type of places). The results were horrible. I couldn’t believe how terrible the picture quality was. The colors were all off. Then I went to Protek. The difference was like night and day. Protek did an awesome job and their prices were better than those local photo shops (that still puzzles me). I would definitely recommend Protek.

Again, I still don’t understand why it is my fault I shot film and expected a professional lab to you know, treat my order in a timely and professional manner.

Last I checked, The Icon LA, A&I, Laurel Custom Color, One Hour Photo Avenue and Swan Photo Labs, all still process film with 1 – 2 day turn around times complete with high resolution scanning and plastic slips for negatives. Film is very much alive, I can refer you to 20 – 30 acquaintances IN Los Angeles that still shoot film. Fuji and Kodak are still producing and researching new film technology. There is a resurgence and demand for it among many artists.
I’ve no axe to grind per se, literally I am telling my exact experience with them word for word what I was told.
I get it, they were transitioning. TELL THE CUSTOMER THAT.
But like I said, what really makes this review unabashedly honest is, like i said before. the BOTTOM LINE.
There were fingerprints all over every single frame of my negatives. and when i asked them (not accuse them mind you) about it, they just denied it.

Yup, that’s why I’ve had photography shows in NY, print in international art magazines, press from around the internet AND stock representation by a company that starts with a G and ends with a Y! Yup, def don’t know the art of it. Regardless of whether you think I am a «good» photographer or not, it has nothing to do with how my film was treated.

I was recommended to this Lab by a friend of mine who has used them for a while. I needed to get some old films scanned at high resolution and some digital files cleaned up. I’m not a pro, but I definitely know the difference when I see it. I tried Costco and the likes but they really couldn’t get the job right. After a few attempts, I gave up. I guess you get what you pay for. I wanted to get all the images (film and digital) to match color wise so that I can compile an album for my parents but it was a nightmare. I’ve been trying to get this done for 3 months. I went to Protek about 2 weeks ago and just yesterday picked up my order, as promised. I can say I’m very pleased with the outcome. They told me that it would take a little bit of time to get all the old negs scanned and cleaned up and color managed to match all the recent digital files. Not to mention the Photo shop editing that was done. Some of the old negs were over 30 years old with scratches and damage. They cleaned it all up as if it was never there. This place is the real deal. What really caught my attention was the custom albums they make in house. I’m gratefully to have found this Lab. They truly are a professional full service lab. If you want anything done right the first time with the pro touch then skip the headache of the mega chain stores or the mom and pop joints that have limited knowledge and expertise. I’m actually thinking about having Protek make me one of their custom albums rather than just placing the photos in a generic album. I think my parents will love the extra touch to detail, after all it is for their 40 th anniversary. Can’t say much about this Lab, I loved their product, service, prices, and I’ll be back for more.
