Specialties
Workshops for actors with industry professionals, such as casting directors, agents, managers, acting coaches, directors, and professional actors.
We are a very «actor sufficient» company– meaning everything is done by you. You get to sign up for what you want, when you want, you choose your sides from our selection or using the criteria given, keep track of your schedule, etc. We aren’t a company with consultants who will create your schedule or tell you what to take– we believe that you as an artist and business person should have that right and responsibility. We ARE here to help you if you need it.
History
Established in 2007.
The idea for The Actor’s Key was hatched in a studio guest house by two actors: Kristen Caldwell and Katie Shaw. Hailing from the East Coast, the two actors noticed something was missing from the workshops they were attending in L.A., so they decided to create their own. Caldwell, a high school teacher, and Shaw, from a family of educators, felt that the educational aspect of the workshop was important. Caldwell says, «I look at them as tutoring sessions.»
Another aspect they focused on was atmosphere. They hope to to create a nurturing environment for the actors, «where you feel like everyone has your best interests in mind,» Caldwell says. There are free game nights, seminars, and low cost classes, so the actors have plenty of places to mingle and grow. «It settles you to be in a comfortable place to learn and grow and meet fellow actors,» Shaw explains.

Kristen C.
Business Owner
Kristen is a hs teacher, former actor, & mom of two, who helped start The Actor’s Key as a way for actors to grow as performers, while taking control of their careers.
With a background in education, she drew from ideas that worked well in the class room– one on one time for individual questions & attention, group work for the Q&A, and written feedback to ensure the performers could take their instructors’ ideas with them in order to look back and continue to grow. In addition, she realized that being able to study in advance, which her students preferred to pop quizzes, would translate into the workshop world with prepared scenes instead of cold reads.
She also hoped to give actors more responsibility in order to help them to thrive on their own. Instead of a consultant, she wanted the actors to be able to research the workshops and choose what they wanted, to choose sides showing off what type they feel they are, & give the best impression in order to get the best feedback.
