YEE: Asian Box

Love the food. Love the company of fellow Unilocalers. Love the host, Katie B.
What’s there not to love about the event? Absolutely nothing.
The event took place at Asian Box in Burbank and they’ve been there a few months and I had never seen it. They offer explosively, flavorful, fresh meals made to order. They even make their own sriracha sauce!
Checked in by lovely Katie B. She explained the whole event and made me feel comfortable. Then I was on my way to creating my own box.
Staff were friendly and attentive. They explained the whole process as it was my first time there.
I customized my box:
1. Brown rice
2. Lime basil tossed shrimp
3. Topped with fresh bean sprouts, pickled vegetables, chopped peanuts, fresh herbs, caramel egg and fresh lime squeeze
4. Tamarind vinaigrette and no oil fish sauce on the side
It didn’t take long before staff brought out my box. Very efficient! Food was fresh and delicious. Loved the jumbo shrimp. Throughout the night, staff brought out tofu and shrimp rolls for everyone to try and they were delicious as well. I didn’t really like Phở sample. Flavor was not all there and the noodles were not Phở noodles. It was actually vermicelli noodles.
As we part at the end of the event, we were given goodies from Asian Box (jungle jerky and coupon cards – 1 good for 1 free box and 2 for free house made drink with purchase of any box) and Katie B. ( Unilocal shot glass, cell phone accessory and « Unilocal Life» fingerless gloves).

Always a fun time at a Unilocal Elite event, especially with Katie!
Asian Box is a new healthy build yer own box of goodness place that was transported here from the bay area. Nice to see this new location in Burbank, conveniently across the way from the AMC theaters downtown. Upon arrival, there was awesome swag at the tables — Unilocal shot glass, cell phone dangly and « Unilocal Life» fingerless gloves. Katie was very welcoming, as usual.
Staff was very friendly and helpful, letting us sample shrimp spring rolls and tofu spring rolls. You got to build your box however you liked — choice of meat (I went with the beef, but next time I will try the shrimp!), over rice noodles/​veggies/​rice/​brown rice, with various sides and toppings. I got the siracha one, tasty with a nice zip, and don’t forget the caramel egg, which was the best topping!
The build-​a-​box was yum, nice to meet some new elite Unilocalers in a super chill event. Great to get the favor bag at the end with the sample of Asian Box’s jerky! OMG it was so good and fresh, I gotta go back! Thanks Katie and the other new elite Unilocalers, fun event and great to meet all of you!

Totally worth sitting through LA rush hour (who am i kidding; it’s always rush hour)
Went to the YEE for the DTLA Asian Box, but I really wanted a chance to meet fellow Unilocal Elite newbies so I trekked up to Burbank.
Decided to step outside of my comfortable jasmine rice, beef, and tamarind vinaigrette to try the pork, chilled noodles., with the tamarind vinaigrette again. I think the noodles don’t soak in the sauces as well so i’ll probably skip it next time.
Loved this event because i finally got to talk to the ever so famous Katie B. for a bit as well as other Unilocal Elites.
Quick, casual, convenient, delicious. A fan!

This was my first Unilocal event and I had on idea what to expect. I figured for it being a Monday it wasn’t going to be too extravagant, but i did prepare for some great food.
As mentioned before it was a Monday night so the venue of Asian Box was very fitting. The main reason of this event was to get the Unilocal elite noobz together and share ideas, mingle, and just meet some elites alike.
After grabbing a menu and placing my order i stepped outside and Katie B. forced me sit next to Kevin L. lol it was’t a bad thing though. She sort of broke the ice for everyone to speak to each other by forcing it on us and i appreciate that. Now i have YFFL ( Unilocal Friends For Life). Jes A. also joined our table and we had great conversation over great food! It offered the opportunity to sort of be close and just talk about other restaurants we would recommend, which ones we frequent, and of course discuss the meal we were eating.
Being the Unilocal elite event that it was, Asian Box catered to us as we were gods and goddesses; it gave you an amazing feeling.
I left with some really nice goodies that makes my eliteness all official. I picked up my shot glass, phone token, and gloves, all showing off the Unilocal symbol. Thank you Katie! I cannot wait for the next event.

Thanks Unilocal for introducing me to this place! Asian Box reminds me of Shophouse. but wayyy better. The food is made more for. Asian people who know their food. Yum. Ordered the beef per recommendation of the cashier, and put all of the sides in my box as well as a carmelized egg. As for sauces, the cashier recommended the vinagrette (which was their most popular) and I also got a hotbox sauce.
After sitting down, we were immediately served with shrimp roll appetizers. Not long after, my food came out– super quick! The food itself was very flavorful and delicious, and the beef was super tender and good quality, which really surprised me. Getting everything in my box was the best choice ever, as I had a wide variety of food to eat and mix with. On top of that, I fell in love with the carmelized egg! The vinagrette did go very well with the box, and the hot box sauce mixed in was the perfect amount of spiciness and flavor. We also got to try their tofu spring rolls and their beef phở, and I would have to say the tofu spring rolls were my favorite. However, their phở does need a little work, something doesn’t seem right with the broth.
The lemon cocktail was very refreshing, and overall, it was a great dinner. Thank you Asian Box and Katie B. for the goodie bag with coupons for next time, Unilocal branded products, and beef jerky! So glad Christopher H. did not take my jerky as he said he would. Can’t wait to come back and have another delicious meal!

My name is Jes, I live in Burbank and I FREQUENT Vietnamese places.
If you were to do a pie chart on the kinds of restaurants I review, Vietnamese would be a good chunk of it, followed by donuts.
So the fact that my first YEE was in Burbank at a Vietnamese place is a sign.
Asian Box has been there a few months and I had NEVER seen it. I did not realize that whatever had been there before was gone and now AB was there to take it’s place.
Obviously they treated us like kings and queens there so I am eager to go back and try it as a normal person.
As for the food, I wouldn’t say you gotta get on the 5 and get your butt to this place, but if you are taking in a movie, this is a place worth visiting.
I made my own box and everything came out really quick and everything was very flavorful. Usually places like this lack in flavor, but I was really impressed with all the different tastes. I hate biting into chicken and it tasting like chicken. And their chicken was moist (yup, I said it) and full of flavor. Everything tasted very fresh.
Their lemonade and their mint tea was really good too. I don’t love spending $ on a beverage, but these ones would be worth it.
We had a good time and Asian Box treated us really well. Everything just kept coming out and I am excited to take my husband there next time we go see a movie.
I was so excited to get one of Katie’s famous hugs, but that was just icing on the cake. I was so pumped to meet fellow Unilocalers and get some tips from them on good places to eat. This was the best way to be introduced to a YEE since it was so low key, so now that I have dipped my feet in… when do we rave?!
I felt totally welcomed and I am super excited to show off my repurposed phone fob on my key chain.

I really enjoyed this restaurant, great location and really great food for a quick bite. Excellent location (directly across the AMC) with super friendly staff.
All the food is organic, gluten free and locally grown. I built my own box, the garlic/​soy marinated steak was SO GOOD! Really tender and cooked perfectly! The beef phở was ok, not the best phở I’ve had but still decent. The shrimp spring roll was great and I washed it all down with some lemon lime marmalade!
I will be returning!

They call that café sua da in my hood. Let’s do it. Meh, needs to be stronger, sweeter, and more bitter. How else will I get the caffeine shakes???
Ox box… Double beef, all veggies, all toppers, caramel egg, sriracha, and two bites later … I hit enlightenment. Fresh, tasty, tender … like the perfect sweater out of the dryer.
I buy another one for breakfast tomorrow and wish I lived closer to burbank.

When I arrived, the friendly counter people explained how to order and let me at it! Normally, I HATE curry, but decided to live on the edge and had the Coconut Curry Tofu over brown rice and asian salad, with all the extra toppings, the sriracha sauce, and the asian spice dust. It was so good! I also really liked the tamarind vinaigrette which I wound up getting and also putting on. I also got to try the spring rolls which were really, really good, and I would definitely order next time. Also got to enjoy some refreshing lemonade. Both service and the food were very good! Give it a shot!
Oh…and I almost forgot… I have two magic words for you to order: Caramel Egg. Just do it; you can thank me later.

Had a great time at this event! This was a great welcome to Unilocal Elite and I really enjoyed getting to meet Katie B and some other new Unilocalers.
For food I got The Miss Jones (lemongrass pork and chilled noodles, sauce tossed veggies, caramel egg, and all toppers except jalapeño, with extra fish sauce), delicious! I particularly liked the park and the caramel egg. The bowl was huge and I only ate about half, it also made for a great lunch today! In addition to the bowl I also got to sample the springrolls, which were also very good. When I got home I took a look into the gift bag they sent us home with and found beef jerky, yes beef jerky! It had all kinds of spices going on and was super good.
I will definitely come back and try some of the other boxes and make my own!

Not sure if it was because I finished my last final today, but I was in such a good mood at this event! There’s free mall parking since it was in Burbank, and the location was easy to find. We got there a little later due to work schedules and traffic, but at ~8:00 the event was still going strong!
We met a fellow Unilocaler named Jeff who turned out to be an alumni from our law program, so cool!
Now on to the IMPORTANT stuff:
Asian box was GREAT!!! I’m actually obsessed with the place now which is both a blessing and a curse since they’re downtown location is located across the street from my office and just a couple blocks from my apartment. The people working there were AMAZING and so nice. My friend and I both ordered the Ox Box, which was a humungous proportion, piling of perfectly cooked, still red in the middle, top quality beef! It had a caramel egg, and peanuts and stuff on top of the rice, and that sriracha sauce was bomb. Anyways, the box was so big that I took home a bunch of leftovers which my boyfriend stole and ate, but even his snobby butt was saying that the meat quality was amazing.
We also got to try their lime drink, and the springrolls, which were both good. BUT OMG. They gave us this little gift bag with homemade beef jerky in it, which was SO GOOD. Like actually probably the best beef jerky I’ve ever had (not that I’m constantly eating beef jerky so idk about how much weight you wanna give that statement.)
Anyways, the staff there was so nice and accommodating, especially Tracie (sp?) who works at the downtown location, so I’m gonna pop over soon and say hello. They gave us lids to bring our leftovers home with, and also extra sauce.
All in all a great event!

Arrived around 7:20 and found parking in the underground lot. The lot seems a bit shady. A lot of random corners and not particularly bright. (Just an observation). Walked upstairs, turned the corner and there you are: Asian Box. Checked in, got my name tag, got offered a sample of Asian Box’s spring roll, and went to order. You can choose from 4 House Favorites or you can make your own. Ordered my own with brown rice, chicken, all of the toppings (including the caramelized egg, and the tamarind and siracha sauce. Got seated in the patio underneath one of the heating lamps and got to mingle with some newbies as well! (Nik &Jes) Food came out in a jiffy along with additional samples throughout the night such as the Tofu Spring Roll, Shrimp Spring Roll, and Beef Phở.
As for my box, didn’t know if the sauces were a good combo but they turned out to be. (PHEW!) The sauce reminded me a bit of a teriyaki sauce. Not sure if that’s what was supposed to happen when you mix the two but nonetheless, the sauce had great flavor. Having all the add-​ins gave this box a balance. The crispy shallots was the topping of it all. Deep fried until they were sweet. Nom nom nom. Devoured the entire box and felt thoroughly satisfied. Of the samples they passed out, I enjoyed the Shrimp spring rolls. Not sure what sauce they had on it but it tasted fresh.
Aside from the food, this event wouldn’t have been so great without being able to meeting fellow Newbie Elites! Talking to them and getting their opinions about restaurants around the area was an eye-​opener. There are still so many places to see and eat!

What a great Unilocal event! The food was great, the people were awesome and I finally got to meet Katie B! I got here a little bit later, but the service was unfailingly friendly and cheerful. Right when I walked in, I was served a delicious bourbon lime mixed drink. Best way to start an event! :) We walked in, and the server cheerfully explained the menu and how to order. I knew I wanted the Ox Box as soon as I saw the specials. Who could say no to «double beef.» We filled out the form, tried some delicious shrimp spring rolls and sat down. In less than five minutes, our bowls were brought out to us. They were fresh, flavorful, and hugely portioned! I loved the Asian Street Dust and caramelized onions that mixed into the box. There were ample veggies and just the right amount of sauce. I didn’t feel like I went into sodium overload like I do after I eat at chipotle.
The meat that came with the box was tender and high quality. A lot of times the steak at faster food restaurants are disappointingly chewy, but I was super happy with the quality and amount of steak in the box. I definitely want to come bakc and try the Workout and Miss Jones Box!

It is important to me, and I hope to be consistent with my sentiments in other reviews and elsewhere, that food, establishment, venue, etc etc and all more is secondary. Even though, we were all strangers a few hours ago, good company makes any crappy food taste divine. The little, simple things folks. And tonight I was in good hands~!!!
These are the foods I remember. All consumables were lumped into a box that was orderly crafted for us. The system is basically fast food Slater 50/​50s. Mark what you want on the paper and they give it to you!
The brown rice with peanuts were amazing. The flavor was on the barley sweeter side which should have that flavor.
The bean sprouts, and sauces were all basic. Nothing too fancy or off the wall.
The egg rolls were damn good. I liekd the tofu one. Nvm, i liked both of them equally.
The tofu was delish.
Due to some stomach issues prior to coming here, i could not, was advised by mother Sue W., not to eat and save for later. After all, I had a 40 minute drive home…
The carmelized eggs were bomb! wow… they were great. Thanks Celine for bringing that up. Actually the whole section thanks you haha.
Lemonade with rum. Very yummy. tasted like Mike’s hard lemonade. Muy peligroso cause it can creep up on you. Just had four. Had an option for one more, but, I do not want to get wasted at all this week. It is kinda sad since you LA folks view me as a borracho (drunko) haha. which I am not, promise! i am not~! Just because I have high tolerance does not mean i be borracho.
It was nice to see Katie (as in me being sober for the first time). I am really shocked she remembered my name after such brief interactions and the millions of people she interacts and interacted with. She knows my name xD how sweeeeeeet =D =P

Finally got to meet Jenny N. Her morning check in to Kaiser sticks out like a sore thumb on my phone. Bring your cute little puppy next time~!!!

This YEE was cozy, laid back, and outdoors! I love outdoors event. The heaters were blasting so i am sure people were warm. I started to sweat (tales of a fatass), but it’s all good. I prefer these types of YEEs where you can actually talk to people, a small group too rather than having 10 people or more per table where everyone is yelling over each other. As some of you noticed… Talking is something i do not have a problem with xD

Had so much fun at this event! It was great meeting a few Unilocalers, such as Nanita and Michael. And CM Katie, of course!
The food was delicious! Loved the concept of «Asian street food» and the customization of our Asian-​influenced ingredients. My box had chicken, brown rice, all the veggies (of courses), a caramel egg, Miss Jones’ Sriracha and Asian Street Dust. Before anyone gets confused, the «dust» is a bunch of dry seasonings put together. I swear I’m not crazy, but I loved their dust.
Also, who could resist free samples of spring rolls and cocktails? I know I can’t.
The venue overall was amazing. The staff treated us well and even left us goodie bags filled with coupons and house-​made jerky.
Overall, a casual and fun event! It was a great idea to have an event dedicated to the rookie Elites. Shoutout to Katie for the entertaining event.
P. S. LOVED the swag, especially the headphone jack cellphone charm. It took me a while to realize what that little stick was. I was SO close to cutting it off! Good thing I didn’t!

What an awesome event! Thank you, Katie, for the invite, you are the bomb! Had a blast conversing with fellow Unilocalers, shout out to Adrian (Yay! Thank you!), Michael, Jeff, getting my hands on some killer Unilocal swags and Asian Box coupons and got a chance to try out some of the best Vermicelli around town.
This is definitely a most wonderful way to spend a few hours after work at night — who can resist tofu/​and shrimp vietnamese spring roll, Vermicelli basked in tamarind sweet and sour dressing with toasted shallots, an assortment of veggies and protein, while sipping on lemon marmalade, meeting 2014’s newly badged Unilocalers and talking about our favorite subject. (you guessed it) FOOD! Service was impeccable from start to finish, food was beautifully presented and superbly cooked (I love the way my chicken was cooked — flavorful yet not overpowering and right amount of seasoning), not to mention the freshness of my box! my veggies were: sprouts, carrots, broccoli, lettuce, shallots, cucumber, jalapeño peppers, and more!
There is definitely no place better than Unilocal to meet like-​minded foodies, and Asian Box is a perfect spot in the midst Burbank to represent. Normally, when my family comes to Burbank, we go to Island’s to get burgers or that other spot. Now, we can add a new, delightful destination for our tummies!
All in all, a superb event with awesome food, fun and fantastic company, and the most wonderful CM in the region, who can ask for more? Looking forward to the next Unilocal event and hope to see more of you out there.
