History

Established in 2011.

On May 13th 2011 By Shear Design opened. Helping people with their hair and offering organic options has always been important to me. Also, helping the environment by recycling as much as possible. We hope to continue to help the community in any way We can.

Saw some Unilocal reviews of Melanie and decided to give it a try. I had a horrible haircut to begin with and was very unhappy with the color. Melanie was extremely thorough and thoughtful to what I wanted. My cut and color came out exactly how I wanted, I am super thrilled with it and will be going back to her. By Shear Design also made me feel so welcome and I was immediately greeted at the door. Mary got me a cup of coffee, cookies and a head massage when she washed my hair. Overall a great experience and I look forward to going back.

I used to see Megan. I followed her from another salon. At the Other salon she was flawless. Awesome. Once she got here the quality of her coloring and cuts took a nosedive. I’m assuming that’s because she has to buy all her own products. Whatever she was buying made my hair look like crap. I wanted blonde and it never looked the way I asked. I know she’s capable of it as she did amazing work at her previous salon. She was my stylist for a long time until she stopped returning appointment requests, messed up on my appt times, never wrote the correct date down etc. very unimpressed with lack of professionalism. Def wouldn’t go back to her

Mel is amazing! My friend got her hair colored and cut and I immediately made an appointment with Mel — she is incredibly meticulous and detail-​oriented, very friendly, and reasonably priced. Highly recommended, I love what she did with my hair and I will certainly be going back to her.

Chi Chi is the best manicurist around. I’ve had my nails and toes done by her for 20 years! She is very professional and treats all of her clients like great friends. She works with you to make your appointment exactly what you need.

and I now have the most amazing hair to prove it. She’s been cutting my hair now for about 3 – 4 years, and for the first time since the Sun-​In incident from HS, I got color and it’s incredible. I didn’t know I could ever truly love my hair so much, but thanks to Melanie, I absolutely LOVE my hair and Mel! She’s the best ever and I only wish I’d found her sooner!

I was searching for a place to get my hair colored and this place and one of their stylists (Melanie) came highly recommended. I needed someone who specialized in Unicorn hair (hair that’s is bleached and colored blue, pink, purple etc) and this place nailed it.
The staff is incredibly friendly and fun to be around. Melanie did an amazing job. I got exactly what I wanted and more! She even fixed a bad cut that I’d gotten a month before at another place.
After such a wonderful experience I will never go anywhere else.

The ladies at By Shear Design take such good care of me… I get compliments on my hair often and I always credit my stylist, Lisa. Mary, the shampooist, basically gives you a full head massage that is worth way more than whatever tip I could leave her! Cindy gives a fantastic facial, and ChiChi has been taking care of my nails since I moved to VA. She is a fabulous nail tech and I am never as satisfied if I go to anyone else.
I have watched each of the staff at the salon consult with their clients on what they are looking for and then when the appointment is finished walk them out — everyone gets & gives hugs. This place makes you feel like a salon/​spa should; I am so thankful that I found them!

Friendly welcome as soon as you step inside. They make every effort to accommodate the customer with appointment. For a long time I did not step into a «salon» any more — too many are just «cutting» your hair, but do not have any clue about the correct cutting style.
This Studio I found by accident: I had to stop at the Traffic Light just in front of the business-​area, saw their logo. I checked it out and scheduled my first appointment… and needless to say after the fact: good that I did, I found the place to go to!
