Yong In Tae Kwon Do College

We went to another martial arts school for many years but found our daughter was being taught very little actual martial arts. We decided to give another school a chance and luckily ended up here. Now both of our kids and their father attend and they all love it. Master and Grand Master Lee are incredible instructors (as well as Christian). I highly recommend this school to everyone.

This Martial Arts gym is one of the best in the area in terms of Authentic Olympic style Tae kwon do training. If you are looking for a real gym that offers REAL traning and not a day care then this is the gym for you. They offer not only Tae kwon do training, but also the occasional Hatkido, Judo, and Self-​Defense training. I spent about a year looking for a Taekwondo studio that fit what I was interested in achieving in the discipline, and found Yong-​In Taekwondo College just down the street from my house. Most gyms are focused only on a revolving door of children who end up never learning ay Taekwondo or if they cater to adults, most sessions are just high intensity workouts without learning Taekwondo. Some schools are solely focused on students making the Olympic team. As an adult who started this discipline in his mid-​twenties, I wanted to train in a place that would allow me to grow and develop not only as a taekwondo practitioner but as a martial artist. After doing their free trail and attending the competition team training, I was hooked. I found the place that would allow me to achieve my goal: to be the best I can.
The school is run and taught by Grandmaster Moon H Lee (8^th dan in Taekwondo, 7^th dan in Hapkido, 4^th dan in Judo, along with a litany of accolades and accomplishments) and his son Master Ark Lee (4^th dan in Taekwondo and Hapkido) which allows for a mixture of traditional teaching methods with a modern approach and understanding. As a student who goes every day to train, I was given the chance to assist in class and step in as an instructor as needed. For those interested I am a 2^nd dan in Taekwondo and Hapkido, and train with the competition team every Saturday. Full disclosure: I have a well-​paying full time job and I volunteer my time as an instructor for my love of the school and the art.
As you see on most reviews for schools, the focus is on children. Martial Arts are a great venue for children with pretty much every school will give a child a similar experience, but most places can’t let them develop into their potential. You won’t find a revolving door of students at Yong-​In, but rather you’ll see children grow and develop as Taekwondo practitioners. Not only will they have fun and mature, these kids have the chance to compete in the sport. The best analogy is like being on the swim team at a young age and continuing on to the highest level. Grandmaster has produced many students who have gone to such heights.
It’s not just for kids. It’s great for teens and adults of any level because they can jump right in. The school provides an opportunity for you or your teen to start as white belts and have the experience of either competing or learning at your own pace. You or your teen will learn both the sport aspect and the traditional self-​defense. If you are an adult or teen you are highly encouraged to join, you’ll have more opportunities to reach your goal because of your age, not in spite of it! For those that are interested in transferring in as black belts like I did, the school is made for a student to grow as a Taekwondo practitioner. I personally always think about where I was when I started and how much I’ve improved in my time here. I can guarantee in a year’s time with personal effort you will be a different martial artist entirely.
I mentioned the Saturday class. This is a class that is for the competition team or those that are invited because of potential in both the sport and as martial artists. It’s very much like being part of a sports team — the class is serious and you are expected to have a level of effort and focus through the afternoon; there is a sense of camaraderie between the students; and best of all the high intensity training will improve you as a Taekwondo practitioner. It’s a tough class, but the students who attend develop immensely in the discipline and in character.
If you are interested in competing or just improving this is the place for you. Not many schools in the area will give you the chance to train in an Olympic sport with the opportunity to reach those heights. Yong-​In Taekwondo College not only fit what I was looking for but also is well rounded enough that it encourages individuals to attain their personal goals, have students train for competition, and produces an environment where kids not only have fun but learn the martial art.
