J. Allen Puma, O. D.

Business Owner

Dr. J. Allen Puma earned his Doctor of Optometry degree from the University of Houston in 1987. In 1983 he obtained a BS in Applied Mathematics and a BA in Biology from the University of Vermont. He is a Past President of the Vermont Optometric Association. He completed clinical rotations at the Lighthouse for the Blind, and the Brunswick Naval Air Station. He founded Advanced Vision Care of Burlington, Vermont in 1997. Dr Puma specializes in contact lens fitting and primary eyecare. He is licensed to treat infections and glaucoma. He is a member of the the Vermont Optometric Association.

I’ve been coming in for many years for eye exams, glasses and contacts. Dr. Puma is fantastic, and the staff is always friendly and helpful. I agree with other reviewers though — I had glasses made here and had to have them redone 3 times before I gave up and went somewhere else — where they identified the error in my lenses within 10 minutes and remade them for me — and got them perfect on the first try. Now I just get my glasses online because it is less stressful and way less expensive.

Went in today to get an eye irritation issue that had been bothering me for a week or so checked out. I was worried they may not be able to see me right away. Called at 9:30am, and they were able to squeeze me (a new patient) in for a consult at 11:45!
I had my consult with Dr Morris, the newest doctor of their group, who was kind, thorough, and answered my questions.
The only drawback is parking; their address is 30 Main street, but their offices face Battery street across from April Cornell. The receptionist did mention before my appointment that the parking would either be along Main street (metered), or at a lot where you could pay the vision care $ 2 for a token for parking.
Aside from parking, the staff was friendly, and seemed to have no shortage of patients visiting.

I had a good experience getting an eye exam here. Dr. Morris was friendly and communicated very well, answered all my questions. I’d definitely go back.
As my prescription did not change, I didn’t get new glasses, so I can’t speak to that experience.

Great service here. Top notch. But when I wanted lenses put into my new frames that I purchased elsewhere they wanted me to sign a waiver to not hold them responsible if they damaged the frames. No, I don’t think so! I went elsewhere and got great service. If a company is doing the work putting in the lens they should be held accountable for damaging the frames whether or not they were purchased in house.

Update — I took the glasses that this place couldnt get right down the street to Eyes of the World — 20 mins and some adjustments to the frame /​lens angle later, they were perfect!
