The Doughnut Dilemma

Got some Doughnut Dilemma for my birthday yesterday and it was tasty. I had a peanut butter doughnut and seriously felt like I could run a double marathon afterwards because there was so much sugar! So yay if having a lot of sugar is your thing bur maybe I’m getting too old to eat like that still:-(Their doughnuts can be pricey but it’s worth it for a once in awhile treat! The staff are all really nice and I would go back just to interact with them!

Delicious donuts is all I have to say. They are so fresh and soft that you would want to eat them in one bite. Their staff is super nice as well and I’d def. recommend this. I’ve been meaning to make it out for a nice Saturday breakfast of coffee with donuts while I stroll Church street!

On a recent visit to VT, my family stopped in for a sweet treat. My doughnut was great (maple glazed spice cake doughnut). When my daughter dropped a piece of her doughnut on the floor, I encoraged her to bravely ask the woman at the counter for a piece of replacement topping. She was gracious and sent someone back to the kichen to retrieve another sugar eyeball. Good doughnuts and great service!

I haven’t had a donut in about 4 year thanks to celiac disease, so picked up a gluten free maple donut from the Doughnut Dilemma stand at the Burlington Farmer’s Market and it seriously made my day. Especially because I headed right over to work and all of my coworkers were eating fresh cider donuts and I had a fresh one of my own! The guy working at the stand was really great in sharing my excitement. I’ll be around this place more often for sure.

I can’t have dairy, so doughnuts are few and far between for me. That is until my partner started getting me doughnuts from The Doughnut Dilemma!
The vegan coconut doughnut is my favorite (with coffee!) — but now I know where to get my maple doughnuts this fall! They don’t taste like they’re missing anything — these vegan doughnuts are the real deal. They sell out fast, but that’s how you know they’re good. I wish I could try their other flavors, they look gorgeous.

We snagged a maple donut, at the recommendation of the employee, from Donut dilemma at the farmers market. It was light and fresh, delicious, but maybe a little overly sweet (needed some balance). There were a few other flavors we wanted to try but they were all out, but the one we got was delicious.

Although the doughnuts look and taste good, they are VERY overpriced. $ 2.75 for one doughnut is out of line!

Very good doughnuts but lady in front of us bought the last maple crème after my daughter announced that was what she wanted. Soooo rude. Nice people, cute place, if you need a doughnut.

My daughter loves The Doughnut Dilemma so I could not wait to try it. Yesterday, I got my chance. There were a few people in line but it went quickly. I had the Peanut Butter with Chocolate Drizzled Cake donut. It was a tough decision because they all looked SO wonderful. Oh, my! It was absolutely delicious! If you are looking for a unique donut experience… try this one, you will not be disappointed.

Ok so I was a proud customer prior to the store opening and we just finally got down there this morning. Staff were friendly and reviewed all the options, there were many! We ended up with a combo of classic loves from them, glazed and maple yeast style and tried a few new filled s’mores and cheesecake. They were even better than I remembered. This place will be a great gem in town! There are 2 small tables to eat inside however I think they’re still «moving into their new space» style. I would recommend grab and go. We took ours to the waterfront for a nice walk.

We really wanted to like this place because, well, it makes donuts, it’s local, and there is no real local donut place. The fact is that it’s really nothing all that great. The donuts are average. They’re certainly fresh, but nothing special. I actually think South End Kitchen makes better donuts.
For example, we had a few fritters. They had apple and strawberry in them, and were glazed and drizzled with chocolate. They looked nice but the dough was bland. We tested the fritters, glazed, crème filled, and frosted. It appears they use the exact same dough for each, which is too bad because the fritters could have definitively benefitted from some additional flavoring in the dough aside from the fruit. Everything else was ok.
While the donuts are average, they’re priced as a premium product. Quite simply they are not worth the price.
It’s a two star place. They make ok donuts but I’ve certainly had better and for the price, much better.

This newly opened shop had lots of hype from the local press. I really wanted to help out a new local business so I stopped in on an early weekday morning to buy doughnuts for the office. Walked in feeling good: new business, nice old wooden floors and countertop, chalkboard above the counter… Whoa…$ 27 for a dozen! More if you want decorated or filled? Felt like this new upstart place just slapped me in the face. I braved it and went ahead and ordered a couple dozen. They were OK. Like homemade where the grease never gets hot enough so they are left a bit greasy. Many toppings. Might be a good place to sit with your girl for one doughnut and a coffee to wait out the storm, but that’s about it.
Sorry for the meh review, I was really pulling for you.

I have been dying to try their donuts for quite awhile so when my boyfriend brought 6 home from the Main Street shop, I was thrilled. Unfortunately the maple frosted and cinnamon sugar cake donuts were extremely greasy and tasted like burnt oil. The maple glazed yeast donuts were tasteless. I was so sad. It was especially disappointing as he spent $ 16 on 6 donuts and we threw them out.

Not bad. Was looking for a breakfast spot during the Burlington Marathon day and passed by this place. I thought it was a cute store name which is what initially attracted me, though the store itself really does not lend itself to such a cute name. Anyways, they had a nice large selection of donuts that was a bit overwhelming, but I just went for a very classic donut with sprinkles because I’m a sprinkles kind of girl. No credit card for under $ 5 purchases. Donut itself was alright. nothing mindblowing to me.

This shop makes me excited on so many levels! Every doughnut tastes absolutely incredible! And, I love the environment of the shop and how every doughnut is made my hand each morning! Lets face it, you won’t find a better doughnut — AND because the doughnuts are made with awesome ingredients you don’t leave the shop feeling like maybe you should have been rolled out the door… Major plus guys… major plus!
I mean come on, banana bread doughnuts and maple boston cream? I think, yes! Best dilemma EVER.

I was really looking forward to having this doughnut shop so near my house. Unfortunately, the doughnuts are average (at best), unimaginative and dry. Also, at $ 2.50 a pop, very overpriced. Maybe we caught them at an off day but I was very let down by our experience.

These doughnuts are incredible, so fresh and delicious. They do the classics perfectly — I’ve never had a better maple glazed or Boston cream in my life — and their crazy inventive flavors are really fun and yummy. So. Good.

Let us face it after a long wait for this bakery to actually open I got there this morning. So if I was a chocolate freak I might have been impressed, the choices were limited and 90% was chocolate something. I just wanted to walk out with all the great pastry and bakeries in this town what was I doing here.
I decided to buy 2 glazed yeast donuts (of course coated in chocolate). As far as I am concerned $ 5.55 for 2 donuts specially those donuts was a little much.
After all this the taste mediocre at best.

Doughnut Dilemma did a great job marketing their doughnuts when they were starting out. I found out about them on Facebook. With a name like «Doughnut Dilemma» I couldn’t help but be interested. The fact they deliver or you can pick up at their house made them even more intriguing. The fact you have to pre-​order just added to the cool vibe. And who doesn’t love a good doughnut?
The first time I tried DD doughnuts I pre-​ordered 6 doughnuts (minimum order) on a Friday for Saturday pickup. My boyfriend loves Boston Creams and I love jelly doughnuts. This seemed like the right way to go. I even woke up early to pick up the doughnuts because Lauren and Michelle were only available until 930am that day.
When I picked up the doughnuts, I chatted with the girls and really liked them. I liked their idea. I liked the fact that they were making doughnuts in their kitchen, and controlling how they were sold to suit their needs (ie. people had to pre order doughnuts so they made for demand)) rather than doing things in what might be considered a more traditional way. I liked their cats. I liked their website. I had already convinced several of my friends to pre order the doughnuts and they all liked them very much.
At that point my bf had been on a doughnut testing spree for a few weeks, having tried the other «home made» doughnut sources in the area. Some I had really liked and some I had spit out (Misery Loves Company doughnuts often taste like they’ve been soaked in pig lard). I was convinced that DD doughnuts would be my favorite. So I gleefully brought them home and we tucked in.
Surprisingly, I wasn’t in love. I found them way too sweet. Doughnuts can be covered with various things. Some are plain. Some dusted with powdered or granulated sugar. Some frosted. The DD (yeast) doughnuts we had ordered were all glazed in a thick, sweet, sugar coating. I found that the filings themselves were sweet enough and the glaze was just too much for me. Don’t get me wrong, I liked the doughnuts, but I didn’t love them. I can’t handle that much sugar in the morning. I could envision little kids loving that amount of sugar, but i just couldn’t handle it. For me, the heavy sugar glaze overpowered any subtlety of the yeast doughnut and its filling, leaving me with a mouthful of über sweet.
Still, I kept referring the DD product to everyone I knew. I just loved the brand and the marketing and the makers.
A few months later I went to the Farmers Market and tried one of Michelle and Lauren’s cake doughnuts. Just a plain olé cinnamon, granulated sugar-​coated cake doughnut with a hole in the middle. As I walked away and bit into it my mouth came alive. I’m normally not very into cake doughnuts, but the DD one was a perfect balance of texture and flavor. I went back a few minutes later and bought another one. The next week, I ended up trying another cake-​style doughnut (coconut coating). It was absolutely delicious. My friend, Therin, had a maple-​glazed yeast doughnut and was in heaven. I took a bite and found it too sweet.
So, what’s the moral of this story? There are several:
1. Just like Lauren and Michelle, take a chance sometimes and do what you love. Respect what works for you. If you love something, you’ll do it well and people will bend to meet your supply.
2. Even if everyone else loves something it doesn’t mean you will. Even if that something is considered absolutely delicious by the vast majority of people, it just might not work for you, and that’s ok.
3. Just because you initially don’t like something, it doesn’t mean you won’t change your mind. Don’t completely give up on something just because the first meeting wasn’t what you had envisioned.
4. Doughnut Dilemma doughnuts are cool and inventive and «out of the box». They’re fun. Lauren and Michelle deliver to offices and parties and you name it. If you’re considering ordering a dessert for an event, give these girls a call. Everyone involved will give you kudos for doing something new and different.
I’m giving these doughnuts 4 stars and not 5 simply because I haven’t eaten enough to feel like I can honestly rate them 5 stars. If it were based on the owners, their concept and their spirit alone, I’d give them 5+. Once again, just because I find the glazed doughnuts to be too sweet, it doesn’t mean you will. Just because I LOVE the cake doughnuts, it doesn’t mean you will. There is only one way to find out what you will think of these doughnuts. Try them for yourself. I met Michelle and Lauren today at the home where these round gems are crafted. I paid for my doughnuts headed out to our car where my wife and kids patiently waited for my return. Laurie opened the box, we all gazed at what was inside, and an «ohhhhh» filled the air. These doughnuts looked amazing (it was good that my family was with me when I picked them up or they may had been … hmmm… «lost» on the way home).
After a tasty salad, my son piped up, «May I have my doughnut now?» He was the first to try one and his reaction — which only moments later mine was to match — «Oh my goodness! These are great!»
They are great. We had three flavors of the cake — chocolate icing, glazed and plain. My only regret was that I didn’t brew coffee to go with it (no worries — I still have half of that plain left — I am trying, as I type, to leave it for later).
