History

Established in 1860.

Built in 1860 by Calistoga founder Samuel Brannan (of «the Calistoga of Sarafornia» fame) and later owned by Leland Stanford, the Brannan Cottage Inn, still at its original location at 109 Wappo Avenue, was one of the first buildings in Calistoga to be listed with the National Register of Historic Places. One of 14 cottages featured in the grand 1862 hot springs resort — whose 25 buildings included a skating pavilion, hot springs bathhouse, restaurant and dance hall — it offered visitors a place to stay in carefree comfort. Except for about 50 years at the turn of the 20th century, when it served as a private residence, it’s been welcoming guests to Calistoga ever since.

Completely re-​imagined in 2014, the new Brannan Cottage Inn continues the tradition of welcoming guests to Calistoga and is a premier showcase of Calistoga’s history and charm.

A 21-​year Calistogan, Eden Umble is grounded in all things wine, food, spa, art, history and travel in Napa Valley. Her appreciation for the generous spirit and sense of community in this beloved region drives her passion for the hospitality industry. She finds it a privilege to share these experiences with guests of Brannan Cottage Inn. Although her background runs deep in destination marketing, hospitality, PR & social media, Umble’s first love was the film industry, logging 10 years (and many miles in the US, Europe & Canada) in feature film marketing, PR and unit publicity.

Through her work with Visit Calistoga, Visit Napa Valley and as a private event coordinator, Umble is entrenched in the Napa Valley community. She is continually expanding her knowledge of what’s new and off-​the-​beaten path, serving as an invaluable resource for visitors planning their stay. Umble’s warm, welcoming personality creates a sense of place for her guests before they even arrive.

Just returned from a 2-​night stay at Brannan Cottage Inn. This place is adorable! Clean room, comfy bed, prime location, heated bathroom floors, huge shower, pastries and pour over coffee in the morning, and Direct TV. The sweet woman who showed us to our room noticed I was a bit under the weather and brought me a hot cider. So thoughtful!

We booked Brannan Cottage Inn for two nights after reading about it in Sunset Magazine. I should have paid better attention to Sunset’s award of the Inn as «Best Hotel Renovation.» A renovated building is lovely, but has nothing to do with service, value, location, amenities. Service here was strange. Fresh pastries and coffee are served at 8:30 am, a convenient time for staff to begin her day but a bit late if your guest wants to start the morning earlier. We couldn’t figure out how the television worked, but there is no on-​site staff after 6 pm, so we had to try to reach a designated person who works the night shift at another hotel in the area. Tough when you can’t reach that person. The shower’s hot water setting is unusual, as you have to push a button to get hot water. If only we were told that at check-​in, since, as mentioned before, there is no staff to explain this extra step if you decide to take a shower after 6 pm or before 8:30 am.
The place is well-​located and nicely-​appointed, with a comfortable mattress and nice bedding. With only six rooms, it was quiet. But for $ 295/​night, I think you can get much better value elsewhere in Calistoga. There are many hotels there, and had I checked them out, I think we could have done better for much less. Really, it was not worth what we paid. I wish it were.

Brannan Cottage is beautiful inn located close to downtown Calistoga. Comfortable and lovely accommodations, genuine hospitality, and prime location made this an ideal place for my stay in the Napa Valley. We received a complimentary bottle of local wine upon our arrival, complimentary breakfast of pastries and fruit, and plenty of in-​town recommendations. Wonderful stay, highly recommended!

Fantastic stay-​came up on a whim for one night over Memorial Day. We arrived rather late after a dinner in Napa and were welcomed by a complimentary bottle of wine and a cheese plate in our room. The high ceilings, comfortable décor, beautifully detailed bathroom features made this a place I would recommend to anyone. Complimentary bfast was light but the drip coffee was a nice touch and the baked treats were all fresh and local creations.
Eden was a delight and super helpful in planning out not only our morning run but bike rentals as well. We will be back.

We called to schedule a visit, I called 4 times within 2 hours and eventually just I left a message stating that I wanted them to verify our dates before buying a groupon. The women said they have 2 more rooms and I told her I was going to hang up, buy the groupon, and call back within 5 minutes. When I returned the call, she wouldn’t allow us to book with the groupon? I was so irritated that she confirmed the date and then allowed me to purchase this groupn which she wouldn’t honor. Then said she needed to check with her boss — so we sent her our groupon showing that there were absolutely no blackout dates but they STILL wouldn’t honor our groupon. I’m a freaking teacher — I don’t have this kind of money! This company is very rude and has cost me hundreds of dollars. And they don’t answer their phone. Terrible customer service.

Absolutely lovely place! Modern without losing it’s quaint appeal. Excellent service from too to bottom. We truly appreciate that they acknowledged our 25th anniversary. We will not wait another 25 years to come back. I highly recommend staying here. The free shuttle service is so nice to have, and there are so many restaurants within walking distance. We don’t know what to do first!
The room is absolutely spotless and smells like clean linen! There are also modernized outlets for charging your phones, etc. but they haven’t lost their B&B appeal!
Fresh flowers and heated floor tiles! It doesn’t get any better than this.

Just got back from our stay at the Brannan Cottage Inn and it was the most perfect place for a wine country getaway! It is the most quaint place nestled in the quiet streets of downtown Calistoga. Really loved the personalized attention we received from Eden who was truly fabulous and made us feel right at home! We loved the refreshing bottle of wine we received at check-​in as it was the perfect start to our wine tasting adventures.
This place has a complimentary shuttle that picks you up and drops you off at your convenience… what could be better?! The room was amazing as well — large king bed that was extremely comfortable, illy espresso machine, flat screen tvs with all the good stuff (HBO, Netflix, etc.), bath robes, fantastic rain shower, fire place, balcony — you name it! A+ for location, extremely close to all the restaurants, shops, grocery stores, spa! Would definitely recommend and will definitely be back! Thank you Brannan Cottage Inn for a very memorable trip!

Spent an amazing long weekend at Brannan Cottage Inn with my wife. The property is freshly refurbished victorian era property. Very clean and tidy gardens, at the quieter East end of town, great parking on site.
We arrived mid-​afternoon, greeted by Eden, as others have commented really friendly and helpful. She talked us through the local amenities such as the free on-​demand Shuttle bus. We were shown to our room — the property has a only a handful. Had the room at the back of the property looking up the valley to the mountains. Complimentary wine and cheese plate kicked off our vacation.
It has a small balcony with seating outside the room to rest up feet, and catch afternoon sun with a glass of wine. The room was very clean, light and airy, well equipped refresh. Fridge with complementary water in closet + gowns, really good pillow top bed — decent night of sleep, Illy espresso machine to pull us out of bed. Details like built-​in USB charger points, large screen TV, with Netflix, AmazonTV, and DirectTV topped it off. Bathroom while a little small, had a great rain shower head, full set of towels/​flannels, soap/​shampoo etc.
Street noise from was negligible and we sat outside in the afternoon and evening on both days. The neighbourhood was quiet by day, and very quiet overnight. The room had both AC and a fireplace, we needed neither — the room was a perfect 65 °F overnight. Great location just a couple of blocks from town made it easy to walk for breakfast, dinner, supermarket for snacks, bike rental etc.
We liked the property and location so much, that we’re going back for harvest at the end of summer.

My husband and I spent 2 nights on 2⁄6. The Inn Keeper «Eden» was the best Inn Keeper I have ever encountered. We stayed in a King room in the back of the Inn. I thought the room was nice but was not a luxury room. Our room seemed unfinished. The room was not decorated. Nothing on the walls. There was a tv above the fireplace that was not connected. The room was painted white and gray and felt very cold and uninviting. As with any old house the walls are very thin and we could here our other guest showering and talking. Entering in the back of the Inn felt a little unsafe as 2 men were hanging out both days smoking either in their car or sitting on their back porch. Everytime we came or went out they were outside smoking and just hanging out. Their place is right next to the back of the Inn. I was also surprised how much road notice we could hear which created a problem with sleeping. The rooms on the internet look much nicer than the room we stayed inn. The Inn itself is very charming. Wished I’d stayed in one of the rooms I saw on line.

I recently stayed here for just one night. The property is very charming and full of character and history. My room was very cozy and the rooms have been nicely upgraded. They have every amenity you could think of. Our host Eden was so attentive and very helpful in making appointments at a couple wineries.
Its a short walk to downtown Calistoga. There is a small courtyard with tables and chairs to relax with your morning coffee or with a nice bottle of wine that they leave for you upon check-​in.

My husband and I stayed here last week during the Napa Film Festival. The room was cozy and comfortable and service outstanding. This is definitely our go to place when we visit the Napa area now. We highly recommend!!!

Change of owners has had an adverse effect on service. The Breakfast was stale awful pastry and some gross boiled eggs. The room was noisy, and smelled of sewer gas yuck. The bed was so soft in the middle that the edge was the only usable part. My back is still sore from the bed. Our neighbors had a baby that cried most of the night well at least until 1:30 am. The toilet would run and refill every 33 minutes on its own. Lots of street noise as well. Run down and in need of repair. Perhaps Comfort inn will remodel this as its way over due.

Stayed 2 nights in the Sage room for a little getaway with my husband. Came across the Cottage as a last resort because most places were sold out. Im so glad we did. We are usually more resort goers than B&Bs, but I found the historical charm and central location to be a great experience. Doug is a friendly, hostpitable host, full of local information, and helpfulness. I spent both mornings on the front porch with their resident dog, drinking coffee with their delicious homemade banana nut bread. Beautiful, serene, quiet. Rooms were small and intimate but had a refridgerator and an updated shower.
My only complaints are something that comes with such a vintage house: the squeaky floor boards and thin walls leave not as much privacy as one on a getaway trip would hope. But being that this cottage has been standing since the late 1800’s it was easily overlooked. Also, the bed wasn’t as comfortable as I would have prefered at that price but I was grateful I had brought my own pillow or else it would have been a long night.
I would gladly stay here again.

My girlfriend, dog and myself had a beautiful two nights’ stay here. The owner is super friendly. We loved the proximity to the town and the free port-​wine!
Our room was very cute and the breakfasts were super tasty with nutritious items.
It was totally chill, laid back, relaxed. We would come back!

Unassuming, clean, friendly b&b in a historic building. We were idly looking for weekend getaways and happened upon a Living Social coupon for the Brannan Cottage Inn, so it seemed like serendipity. Doug is gracious and helpful — perhaps we got extra attention because we were the only guests, it being off season. The Periwinkle room was cozy and comfortable. The port and chocolates left out in the parlor were an extra nice touch. Would definitely stay again.

I spent three comfortable nights in the Periwinkle room here in early November. The owner is a good guy – very kind, helpful, kinda old timey salt-​of-​the-​earth. He gave excellent recommendations for restaurants and hikes, and offers a huge array of discount coupons to wineries, mineral baths, and more. My bed was comfortable and my shower excellent. I loved the fireplace heating system. Breakfast was a pretty spread of fruit, yogurt, breads and pastries each day with a hot treat made fresh for each guest (e.g. chile relleno quiche). This place isn’t decked out with bells and whistles; it’s historic, clean, warm, and quaint. I hope to be back some day.

The Brannan Cottage Inn is a quaint Bed and Breakfast. The building is from the mid-​1800s and it has been kept up well. They have a cute little patio which is used for breakfast in good weather and appetizers/​wine on Friday evenings in high season. There are a few different rooms with all the basic amenities. Parking is good and the location is 5 minutes walking distance to downtown Calistoga.
Our experience was good, but far from spectacular. At arrival the owner is accommodating and kind. They have offers for wineries, restaurants and the free use of a natural mineral pool at a nearby spa/​hotel. The reception room is nicely decorated and homey.
The rooms are decorated in a similar way, but here comes the issue. The furniture is old and crammed into a small area. The bed in the rose room was so creaky and hard that we couldn’t sleep. The shower was old and the bathroom door didn’t close. However, its not all bad. I’ve stayed in a lot worse. Also, the owner was kind enough to let us change rooms and none of the above was a problem in the other room.
Breakfast was excellent. There was a great selection of fresh fruit and cereal and then a hot breakfast is served to you and it is different every day. Very good.
All in all I’m giving the place three stars and not four because I don’t think it is worth the price you pay for it. For $ 200 a night I expect a good shower, floor space and a comfortable bed. If the owners take care of a few issues like getting new box springs and mattresses for the beds they could make the place worthy of the price tag.

Great location! A beautiful short walk to downtown Calistoga.
Doug and Judy were great hosts. Extremely attentive. Breakfast was fun and afternoon wine was perfection.
We stayed in the Lavender Room. A bit weathered. Mold in the shower. So much clutter throughout the common area and the room.
When we were getting ready for a formal evening, we plugged in ONE hairdryer and blew something out. Doug and Judy figured it out… but, only once we ran out of time and went to dinner with wet pony tails.
The history of the property is fun… but, I wish the upkeep of the property was a bit more detailed.
Overpriced for the level of deterioration of the property. Unfortunately, we will not be a repeat customer at that price.

I’d give them 3−½ stars if I could.
The pluses:
— Location, location, location — minutes to walk into the charming town of Calistoga with all the shops & restaurants close by.
— Doug & Judy — owners and gracious hosts of the Brannan Cottages Inn. Whether it be questions about internet access, restaurants, wineries, etc., they were always willing to help.
— Charm — it’s lovely. Our room had a four poster bed, fireplace, etc.
— The Friday night wine & cheese gathering.
— The thoughtfulness — it was our honeymoon, and when we returned from wine tasting one night, Doug & Judy had placed chilled champagne & flutes in our room. So nice.
— Free internet.
The minuses:
— Squeaky, uncomfortable beds (at least in our room — The Rose Room). It also has squeaky floors, but that’s to be expected given it was built in the 1860’s!
— Thin walls (we were kept up all night by the couple arguing next door); not necessarily something that can be fixed, but important to be aware of.
Things to consider:
— Some of the rooms are very exposed — on the ground floor with big windows and a walkway outside — although they have done a great job of providing «privacy blinds.» Not necessarily a plus or a minus, but something to be aware of prior to booking.
— I also think some of the rooms are more set apart /​quieter than the others — could be good to ask about prior to booking.
— Others mentioned price as a negative — but honestly, it seemed to be in a similar price range to most of the B&B’s we found in Napa.
All in all, a good stay.

It is a lovingly restored cottage (one of the Brannan Hot Springs Resort originals) in a kickass location just off Calistoga main street.
We chose this place as it was recommended to us by Indian Springs Resort across the road (who was booked out). Doug the owner was super hospitable, and eager to help us navigate the town. The breakfast served was hearty, quite typical B&B style.
Agreed with Jess L that the furniture is antique, and the bed is SUPER squeaky and not so convenient for what couples do on weekends away. Our room (and seems all the rooms) have a large window facing the yard and the curtains on them are not really thick enough to give privacy.
I would say it’s probably a place my Mum would adore, For me? Hmmm I need thicker curtains and less antiques.
