I’ve had the same haircut for around 10 years (just been cutting it myself) and decided it was time to switch it up. I’m not the most up-​to-​date on style trends so I went in hoping for some advice and guidance. Mary Lou gave me some great advice and a few options of what she thought would look nice. After settling on one (and enjoying a free beer) I couldn’t be happier with her suggestion! She did a fantastic job! She even took to the time show me how to style it myself. This place, and Mary Lou, are both great!

I’ve always been a «cut-​your-​own-​hair» kind of guy. It was always hard to justify spending between $ 30-​$ 50. After moving up the Bay Area, I figured it was time to step my game up a bit. I wasn’t sure where to go, so I came to Unilocal and found 18 | 8, but more importantly, I found Sir Cameron. This dude is the best. Period. The experience at 18 | 8 is great. Waiting area is nice and has a TV, and your choice of espresso, beer, wine, any sort of soft drinks, and water. Each barber chair is nice, spacious, and very comfortable.
If your unsure of where to go, or who to get a fresh style from, look no further than Cameron. The dude knows his stuff, but most importantly, his passion for his profession is what is most impressive. My cut is pretty simple compared to some of the stuff I’ve seen him do, but regardless, it is clean and professional every single time.

Saw Tim today, and he is definitely an artist with his craft. He’s very knowledgeable and his gentle work was great for my sensitive scalp. I’m extremely happy with the haircut results and I recommend anyone new to 18|8 to try his work.

So here’s the thing. I was a $ 15 haircut barbershop guy my entire life. I thought, I’m a guy, why would I spend any more than $ 15 bucks for a cut? Damn was I wrong. My husband came home from a haircut with Hanan and I saw the difference a great haircut can make. I immediately booked an appointment with Hanan and I will be loyal to her as long as we both live in the same state. In fact I might even fly back here if I ever move.
I come in with crazy ideas and I always leave in love with my look. I’ve gone blonde, purple, skin fade, etc. she is the absolute BEST!

Obviously I didn’t get a haircut here but my boyfriend did and Chelsie did a REALLY good job! He also mentioned that the Chelsie and the salon are really nice. He mentioned he felt like he was at a really upscale place and it made him feel like he wasn’t just getting a quick cut at some hole in the wall spot. He will definitely return.

I love everything about ¹⁸⁄₈. From the moment you walk in Rita is the consummate hostess, making sure your beverage of choice is prepared while you wait. The staff are skilled professionals and the neck massage and hot towel face treatment are icing on the cake.

Great experience today. The staff takes care of you starting with a complementary beverage. The message was a nice surprise too! I’ll be back again for sure!

I’m new to San Jose and I cut my hair every week, so I had to find a great barber. I Googled «Barber Shops,» and after checking out several sights, I decided ¹⁸⁄₈ was going to be my starting point.
I set an appointment and showed up 5 minutes early. They were on time and after walking up the organized and clean front counter, Chelsie introduced herself, and walked me back. After introductions, I felt right at home. I explained to her exactly what I wanted, and she went above and beyond my expectations! We had great conversation through the cut and I now have a regular barber! The term «barber,» doesn’t quite explain Chelsie. Her vision, sense of style, and great personality put her on the next level. I have been back every week for the past 5 weeks and will continue to do so as long as Chelsie is there!

I wasn’t even getting a haircut I was just watching and the receptionist offered me a drink which was really nice. The salon is so modern and clean inside I would recommend this place :)

Been going to ¹⁸⁄₈ now for about 8 months now– great shop. Highly recommend asking for Cameron. He’s a skilled, meticulous professional who keeps a full schedule for good reason

I just got my haircut within the last hour, and I had such an awesome experience. Hanan is as friendly and great as all her previous reviews were — she listened to what I wanted, asked for constructive feedback on my hair, and gave me a royal treatment. Also, it was just a great experience from the beginning when I check in and got a complimentary drink until check out! I’ll be for sure returning for future appointments!

Was going to go in for a cut because of a gift certificate I received. Scheduled a visit, the time, and there you go, had an appointment. After reading the gift certificate again, the wording was a little funny. So, I asked what it meant. I’m glad I asked. It was basically a voucher for $ 16 off (grooming for free) with the purchase of an executive cut ($ 42).
I can see the price of rent going up in the bay area but i’m good with everything else. I need the excess funds to eat.

I usually do not give such a negative review to a place, but this was preposterous. This review is for Mary Lou; I refuse to call her a hairdresser/​barber/​stylist. So my 11 yr old had lovely thick longish hair. I needed it cut from front and trimmed from back to save his length. For anyone who’s had a kid that age knows how sensitive they can be about their looks!!! She gave him a crew cut??? Biggest mistake on my part; i trusted reviews and chose to sit back and not see what was happening .
Needless to say I have a very sad tween on my hand.
Only reason place gets 1 star is for front desk staff who were saving grace. When I expressed my anger about whole thing they offered not to charge. What was I gonna be able to achieve?!
Only advice I can give if u have long hair; asian style/​quality of hair DO NOT HO HERE! Absolutely not the place for specific requirement hair cut.

Amazing! Hanan and Gabby are amazing. I decided to see what the difference between my normal haircut and this place was and man was I impressed. From the moment you walk in, you are greeted by a charismatic receptionist who goes out of her way to ensure that you are comfortable while you wait. Then I got my haircut by the wonderful Hanan, she has changed my life as I know it when it comes to getting my haircut. I have had plenty of bad cuts, I have had very few amazing cuts and she delivers everytime. I get compliments regularly after my haircuts with her. She is an absolute star and will continue coming back just for her and Gabby’s service

I can’t say enough great things about Hanan! She is very professional and always greets me like a member of her family. I have been seeing her for about 6 months and every time she cuts my hair it comes out the same as the last time — AWESOME!
Hanan has years of experience! If you trying this place for the first time ask for Hanan she really is the best!!!

So I’ve been meaning to get a haircut (haven’t gotten one in few months, just been lazy, lol), so I jumped on Unilocal and found this place nearby. I wasn’t necessarily tied to any one barber or shop, and this looked really nice and was open when I needed it to be. A month or so ago I tried to do a walk in but they didn’t have a spot open, so this time I had the right idea to call in. They were able to squeeze me in same day on Sunday, and Valentine’s Day no less!
The place is really clean, and while there were only two stylists there when I arrived, I figured it was because we were nearing the end of the day. The receptionist was very nice and offered me a complimentary drink while I waited for my stylist Cameron to finish up with the client he had. I only had to wait a few minutes.
Cameron was awesome! From the get go he was super accommodating. He led me to the changing room where guests change out of their shirt into a provided robe, so you don’t leave covered in hair. I didn’t expect this, and it was greatly appreciated. Once in the chair, Cameron was really attentive to what I wanted out of my haircut, what look I was going for, and he even looked at my references on my phone for the look I wanted. He was thorough and you could tell he knew what he was doing with the clippers. Fade was great, and he lined up my corners very cleanly (I don’t like a line all the way around, so it was greatly appreciated that he asked first). Shampoo and conditioning came next, but I didn’t expect the hot towel over the face, so that was another bonus. Lastly, he showed me how to use product and a blow dryer to style the top of my hair.
Once finished, they provided me with a card to get in touch with Cameron for future visits, as well as a complimentary cleanup and two referral cards that if both used would get me a free cut. A little pricier than what I’m used to ($ 42 for a standard cut), but well worth the generous tip that came after. All in all, a lot of perks to my first cut, and it definitely made me consider getting the 7-​visit package for the future. Great experience!

I have been a customer of 18|8 for about an year and had an on and off relationship with their Mountain View location. Just FYI, not because I had any bad experience but I like trying new places. As far as service is concerned, 18|8 stands as one of the best Salons I have ever been. Especially their Campbell location takes the cake in customer service.
I called them up in the morning and the representative was more than happy to schedule for the afternoon appointment same day. The stylist assigned to me was Tim. He took genuine interest in understanding my hair type and what would suit me. He did not just take interest but also communicated with me in details as to why he is thinking in a certain way about my haircut. He did not rush rather, took his time to design my haircut and also taught me how to style it. I strongly recommend Tim for the haircut. He absolutely gave me great insights and few cool tips, which I am trying successfully everyday.
Looking forward to going to this location and getting my next hair cut by Tim!

I’m a 46 year old man, I don’t keep up with the latest trends in hairstyles, and let’s be real, trendy hairstyles are for the twenty-​thirty-​somethings and younger. I also don’t work in the cosmetology industry, so aside from not keeping up with trends, I’m also not well versed in the appropriate terminology. In other words, I may not know the right name for things.
Before I dive any deeper into what happened, I first want to say that my experience at Eighteen Eight was delightful. I even enjoyed Cameron, my hairstylist. I just thought the end result was the worst haircut I’ve ever had. But, he was a very calm, relaxed person, a pleasure to talk with and came very highly recommended on Unilocal.
When I sat down with Cameron he asked me how I wanted my haircut. That was a bit hard for me to answer because I’ve been doing «home jobs» on my hair for the last year. I thought a professional cut would be nice to have to get what’s left of the hair on my balding head back into shape. I confessed this to Cameron. I told him I just want it to look good and have it shaped up.
However, next I told him exactly what I didn’t want. I told Cameron that I don’t like «lines.» I furthered explained myself by motioning around my head with my hands and stating that I don’t like my hair to look like it was drawn on my head, there should be no hard lines anywhere. Additionally, I told him I like a close crop but that I don’t like the «shaved» look. I don’t want my head to look shaved. Finally I told him how much I hate my hair when it grows out because it gets «puffy» on the sides and it would be great if he could cut it in a way that it would grow out and not do that.
Cameron said there wasn’t much he could do about the way it grows out, that’s just what hair does. He said he would do a «fade» and just use the clippers to blend it so it won’t looked shaved. I have two problems that.
1) I lived in New York for five years and my hair stylist there did an absolutely amazing job. My hair never grew back puffy, it pretty much always looked great. Admittedly, I ignored his response to this because I haven’t found anyone who could cut my hair remotely as good as my stylist in New York since I’ve left.
2) I had no idea what a «fade» was (see my opening paragraph), so I trusted that Cameron understood what I meant when I told him I didn’t like lines or the shaved look. Apparently, I was wrong and should have questioned his judgement.
After he completed my haircut, he asked me what I thought of it. I was looking straight on in the mirror and thought it might be a little short, but I was okay with it looking straight on, it seemed fine from that angle. Instead of giving me a mirror so I could look at the back, he turned me around to wash my hair. I guess I was so distracted by the insanely logical and simple concept of combining the hair wash and cut station in one place, I never thought to look at the back of my head. In retrospect, that might be a good thing as I probably would have lost it in the store.
I paid my money, got in my car, drove home. I thought I was satisfied with the my hair cut when I left, I honestly did. But later that evening, I was in the restroom at my home and noticed my hair looked even shorter than I thought when I was at the salon. I pulled out a hand held mirror and turned my back to the large bathroom mirror. That’s when I discovered a «fade» is just shaving the back of your head and there’s a very clear, distinct line that looks like it was drawn on with a pen. It looks like he took a ruler, laid it against the back of my head, and cut everything below it.
Exactly what I didn’t want. I almost screamed. Well, I did yell profanity. A «fade» does not look good on a person who’s balding on top. It just doesn’t.
I now look like a 46 year old man who’s trying to pretend like I’m 25 years younger than I really am (which is not something I do). The only thing that can fix this is to completely shave my head – which is a look I don’t really like on me either. I’m trying to weigh which cut I’d loathe the least before I make a decision on a total shave or not. It’s terrible.
Needless to say, I won’t be visiting Eighteen Eight again. To be fair, for this particular style, it’s probably quite a good hair cut, but it’s not what I asked for. I’ve never had a stylist do exactly what I asked him not to do. I used to work in the computer service industry and a good chunk of my job was interpreting what people were trying to tell me was wrong with their machine. They weren’t techs, they didn’t speak my language, so I had to speak theirs. I feel like the same should be true for hairstylists. You should understand what I’m saying when I try to explain what I want and don’t want.

I wanted to wait till my second visit to write a review just to make sure I was certain.
Cameron is my barber and I am really glad I found him. For many years I have never had any satisfying haircut. I have had unmanageable curly, thick, and wavy hair that made it difficult for me to style the way I wanted it to. I was also going to those cheap $ 12 haircut places that perform basic crappy haircuts.
The attention to detail that Cameron had applied to each of my haircut was superb. You know you’re going to get a really good haircut when you’re barber is very passionate about his work. Not only did he give me the best fade I ever had, but he also taught me to straighten out my hair with a blow dryer and brush so that I could style my hair properly. This was simply life changing.
Within the first two weeks of getting my first haircut by Cameron, I’ve had numerous strangers compliment my haircut. From a lady who works at Nordstrom, two interviewers at a company I applied for, a girl who works at Starbucks, and the receptionist at an auto body shop. Till this day I am still getting random compliments!
The entire 18|8 experience from beginning to end is really outstanding. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone searching for a new place to get their haircut.
