History

Established in 1996.

RennWerks has been in business for almost 14 years. It began life out of the interest of two individuals, Dave and Richard, who had a passion for racing and were frustrated at the lack of capable shops in the area that could support their interests. The two talented drivers who loved racing Porsches, had met during several club events and decided to pursue professional racing in the American Le Mans, and Rolex Race Series. They achieved many honors and accolades. RennWerks was created to supplement their operations and to service the automotive needs of those individuals who are passionate about BMWs and Porsches. Michael Johnson was hired as Shop Foreman and expanded services to include Audi, Ferrari, Mercedes, and VW repair. In March 2006, RennWerks moved from its Mountain View location and relocated to Campbell. Michael purchased the business from the original owners in 2008.

I am an ASE Certified Master Technician with 20 years of factory and independent experience with various european car companies. I am also a bit of a techno geek and possess a college education in Business, Automotive technology, and certificates in computer science.

I took my BMW X5 to Rennwerks to have an oil leak repaired, the local dealer had given me an estimate for total repairs for over $ 12 000 yes over $ 12 000. When Mike (the owner) looked over the bill he showed me what was necessary for repairs that should be done now and ones that would be best look at a future date. It became obvious the he and his mechanics were extremely competent with German cars and that they had invested heavily in the equipment training and tools to do a top notch job. To make a long story short there was no lengthy wait to get in to the shop, repair costs ended up being only a fraction of what the dealer wanted. These are my guys from here on out.

Potential customers should be careful. I brought my car in to repair an oil leak. The estimate was $ 2500 and a 2 day job. At the end of the second week I was told they needed another $ 1100 to fix it. I was skeptical but said Ok. I picked the car up after 2 weeks. It still leaked the same amount of oil as the day I brought it in. I returned the car and was told they would take care of it. They needed 2 days. After another week they called me and told me it would cost another $ 2500 on top of the $ 3600 to fix it or a total of $ 5700. Told me it was a new and different leak and was not their responsibility. Unbelievable. I could not get resolution from the owner and still have the same problem.

I decided on RennWorks to service my 911 Porsche. I needed new brakes and also re-​charge my AC. I was happy with the service and quality of the work. The estimate came out to be right on target. They ran a little behind on their estimated completion time, but to me, that’s not a big deal as long as they take their time and provide quality work. I’ll continue to use them for future services.

Very good experience taking my BMW X5 here. Gina was extremely friendly, upfront and transparent with what my car needed and what it was going to cost. My car was in need a lot of repairs and they were able to work with me to make sure it was going to be in my budget.
I am very happy with the service they provided and would happily recommend them.

So far, a really good experience. I’ve brought a customer in here before for a PPI on a 2007 Porsche Boxster and was very satisfied with their thoroughness and work, so I decided to bring my 2009 BMW 128i in here for diagnosis and oil change.
Both Mike and Gina are really friendly and I had a nice conversation with Mike while checking my car in. It’s good to know that the people you’re bringing your car to are genuine «car people,» are passionate about their work, and show it without being arrogant. The shop itself was generally organized and clean, which is an important thing for me to see.
My car has been intermittently idling weird– «loping” – and I was hoping that Rennwerks could diagnosis the issue and fix it. They weren’t able to replicate it, but did change the oil, cabin and air filters, and the car is scheduled to go back next week to get an oil leak fixed.
They also found an engine code, which after running a test, were not able to replicate. While they were not able to replicate, diagnosis, and fix the loping, they did provide notes on what they did, which is helpful in case I decide to bring it to another shop, which is unlikely for me since I would want them to finish the job if it continues to be an issue.
Price — a little on the high end, but I would rather a shop be thorough and cost a little extra than to perform a rushed and cheap job.

I just bought my first car and didn’t know what to look for. Lets just say this Audi was a bad buy. I took it to Rennwerks to do a full diagnostic on the car and find everything wrong. They were very thorough and upfront with all the problems and how much things will cost. I only had them fix the control arms and vacuum tubes as those were the only immediate things. They told me my options for the parts to use for the control arms and were very clear with what I was getting. They fixed the problems in a couple days and the car now feels a lot better to drive. They also gave me some pointers on other items I plan to fix myself!
My brother has been taking his car there for a long time and that’s how I found out about them. I strongly recommend Rennwerks as you know they will get the job done right in a timely fashion. My only concern is they are on the pricier side but they were so nice and helpful they made me want to go back.

I drive by this shop everyday when commuting to work and decided to give them a try with my X5M. It still had manufacturer warranty on it but there were some components in the suspension that weren’t covered and hence I need a shop I could trust to work on my truck. I went in wanting to fix my tie rods, as mentioned by the MV BMW dealer to replace. Mike took a quick peek and said the tie rods looked fine. I told him about my alignment issues and also slight shimmy on the highway. He took a deeper look and said there was nothing wrong with the tie rods, sprayed some anti-​rust and popped it out of placed and adjusted it. However, he found my control arms and bushings to be severely damaged and broken. He’s baffled by how the dealer could’ve missed this. The control arm surgery was more expensive than the tie rods surgery and I reluctantly trusted Mike that he was telling the truth. A day later, I got my car back. The car was smooth and drove like a new BMW again. I could DEFINITELY feel the difference. However, the alignment was still slightly off, it falls to the left when driving, so I took it back the next day. They were apologetic and spend hours figuring out. When I took it back at the end of the day, they told me the off alignment was probably because I had swapped tires out (which I did), and the tires weren’t evenly worn probably due to the off alignment. They then spend time explaining into detail what they did, how they counted the tires and told me what it would feel like. At the end of the day, I was really satisfied with the alignment and the work they did. It definitely feels perfect, bumps on the road feel smooth again and not like metal was going to break underneath. Their prices aren’t cheap, but you get more than what you paid for. I wanted a shop that I could trust that fixes issues, be honest in telling my about my vehicle, and I got that from Rennwerks.

Just bought a used mini cooper for our daughter and wanted make sure that everything is safe and in working order. So we did a search of mechanics and decided to try RennWerks. Talked to Mike and explained our concerns with all the noises and odd things that were happening not knowing if its just because it’s old or if there was really something wrong with it. We brought it in and had them do a diagnostic on the car. They were very thorough and explained everything that needed to be done. Mike was very easy to talk to and we left there feeling that we will have peace of mind knowing that our daughter will be safe driving.

the shop that previously handled all my tires/​brakes/​suspension work is no longer in business, so when it came time to put a new set of shoes on my ‘baby’, i clicked through the Tire Rack’s list of recommended local installers and was directed to RennWerks… i’m always nervous when doing business with a new shop since i’m an old school gear head, but as a women i get treated like an idiot… my experience with Mike and Gina could not have gone any better… they were both incredibly friendly and knowledgable, spoke with me like i might actually know something about cars, weren’t interested in upselling any unnecessary work, and honored an older online coupon (even when i offered to pay the current amount)… after the job was done we chatted about other service and scheduled an alignment for a few weeks later… on the day i asked if i could wait (most places do the ‘quick’ thing) but mike said he takes his time with alignments and could i give him the day… i said, ‘sure’ but would need a rental and rather than send me to a local rent-​a-​car, they hooked me up with a vintage M3. the car was done later that day and now handles better than new.
the one comment i’ve seen in other postings that rings true is that it can take a little while to get all the paperwork taken care of (its a small shop and they pay attention to each customer) so if you’re in a hurry, its better to tell them at the start rather than assume you’ll be rushed through (’cause you won’t!)
these folks know what they’re doing and if you care about your ride and want to work with someone who cares about it too, this is the place to take it.

The automatic window on our Mercedes stationwagon malfunctioned on a hot day on Hwy 17. We did a Unilocal search and found RennWerks – they helped us immediately, were so friendly and accommodating – told us our different options, let us sit in the air conditioned office the whole time we were waiting, and Henry the mechanic was so generous as to use a part (clamp) to fix the window, provided that we bring it back to him in Santa Cruz (which is so convenient considering that’s there the car lives!). Incredible customer service, super professional, best possible solution to our otherwise inconvenient situation!

I didn’t feel right after I left and still don’t feel good about the work performed by Rennwerks. I brought my 2009 BMW M3 in to replace a headlight but while I was there decided I would give them a shot at performing some additional work and requested they replace my spark plugs. The only reason I came here is because it is less than a mile from where I work.
The Drop off– It took forever to get in and out of there. All I wanted to do was drop my car off and go to work but for some reason it took an over an hour to get my car checked into the shop. If you’re busy or something (which didn’t seem to be the case), please let me know it’s going to be an hour and I’ll come back another day.
The Repair — The cost was as much as the BMW dealer without the free rental car or the car wash. Reenwerks, you just don’t have the prestige to charge the same price as the dealership. Also, when I picked my car up, I was informed I needed my brake fluid changed. Funny thing about that is, I had a brake fluid flush done 3 MONTHS EARLIER at the BMW dealership. Additionally, there was another M3 that was in for repairs the same day that also, coincidently, needed a brake fluid flush. I think your tool may be broken, you should get it checked.
I don’t have any major issues with this place but it’s just not worth the same price as the dealership. I will not be returning.

Brought my car in for an alignment. First time in, Mike said he would rather not align it since the front thrust bushings were shot (not surprising) and didn’t want to waste my money on a bad alignment. I eleceted to replace the bushings myself, and brought it back. Piece of cake. Mike even torqued one of the ball joints that i had a hard time getting all the way down. I was provided a pre and post alignment printout.

One of the worsts car repair experiences of my life. I had to call repeatedly, no call backs when promised. Work started before I had a chance to review the quote and it turns out BMW dealer is cheaper. They have had good reviews from others I hope my case is isolated I will not be coming back nor will I refer anyone to this shop.

Quality at its finest. My whole family brings our cars here. We trust no one else with our vehicles. The service is extremely professional and the master tech, Mike Johnson has decades of experience working on both foreign and domestic cars.
Trustworthiness and honesty: I brought my e36 m3 here for a serious alignment after installing new suspension myself. Mike charged me several hundred for the alignment. After fiddling with the car, he called us and explained the car had frame damage and that it would be a waste of my money to get an alignment while there was frame damage and advised me to visit a specialty frame alignment shop go get the car mended.
Instead of charging us for the expensive alignment and carelessly aligning the car, Mike charged us nothing and told us what he found through careful analysis. Though It was inconvenient as I was planning to use the car for a road trip the following weekend, I had better peace of mind and saved some extra dollars!

Beyond the Call — 2010 — My 1st Experience w/​RennWerks:
My friend and I were broke college students and on our way back from a road trip. At the edge of Los Gatos, my friend’s 2000 328i E46 blew a coolant reservoir and RennWerks was the only shop that had the part we needed within a 5-​mile radius. Broke, we had to walk all the way there and it was well above 90 degrees out (a hot walk indeed).
We arrived minutes before close and Mike greeted us with the part. As we walked out the door and he asked where the vehicle was. We told him shy of 5 miles away. Please note — We purchased a $ 40 part – not high paying customers at this point. Mike offered us a ride across town and provided tools to help us install it.
the reason I share this story is not to create an expectation for you but to show you the passion of the industry and the care that is given to even the most basic of customers.
Overall, Mike, Gina, and his team are experienced/​knowledgeable technicians and/​or professionals in the industry.
RennWerks rates and estimated completion times are reasonable.

Mike the owner of RennWerks, is awesome! He is a very detailed person with his work. I have a 928 Porche. He knows this car inside & out with his eyes closed. He takes care of it as if it were his child! He does this with all of the cars he works on. The people he has working are the best at what they do… This is the most reliable & honest place that I have ever taken my car to, I will never trust anyone else with the care of my Porche. When you want great service from the from the office manager (Gina) to the Owner (Mike) and the service tech. (Bryan). Go to RennWerks. They took care of every process in lowering my car. I was so happy with the outcome! They even have loaner cars for $ 16 dolla a day! I was set up with a BMW M3 not to bad! Experts in OME and aftermarket set ups. I have been modifying cars for many years and I will say that hands down RennWerks his far above all other shops that I have done business with.
