Specialties
We specialize in Varicose veins.
What are Varicose Veins?
Varicose veins are abnormal veins that are bulging, unsightly, and generally the result of «venous reflux disease». Veins work to return blood, against gravity from the legs back to the heart. The calf muscles contract to help move the blood and valves inside the veins help prevent the blood from pooling in the legs. When the valves don’t function properly they allow the blood to «leak» back into the leg. The elevated pressure that occurs causes veins to become twisted and bulging. This occurs in up to 60% of women and 40% of men. Varicose veins often cause symptoms such as aching, throbbing, swelling, itching and superficial blood clots (phlebitis),. In severe cases they are associated with bleeding and open wounds that are slow to heal («ulcers»).
