Dunkin’ Donuts

I swear to god (no pun intended) I am not making this story up.
Last weekend I went through the drive-​through at this Dunkin Donuts. I live close by, so this is maybe my 15^th time through in a couple of months. It’s never been very efficient or anything, and once I waited for at least 5 minutes for someone to bother showing up at the window (but I was desperate for coffee, so I didn’t drive off).
This day, the line took forever. FOREVER, because of a car (about 2 ahead) that was at the window for a long time. I finally got up to the window and ordered my large French Vanilla regular. When the nice Eastern European woman handed me my card and coffee, she also tried to hand me a small white booklet, saying, «I’m supposed to give this to you.»
I, thinking it was coupons, took it with a smile, which immediately turned to astonishment as I saw the words «BIBLE» in big red letters on it. I handed it back and said «Um, I don’t want this!»
«You’re not a Christian?» She looked really surprised that I didn’t want it.
«No, I’m not! Who told you to give this to me?» (I’m thinking… is this a new store policy??)
«The mayor told me!»
«The MAYOR?»
«Yes, the mayor. He was just here and he told me to give it to you.»
Now, there was a slight language barrier because of her accent, but having been married to a Russian for almost 10 years, I know I wasn’t mistaking what she just said. She just told me that the mayor told her to give me a religious pamphlet. Now, when she said he said to give it to me, he might have just given her a stack to give to people, and not said «Hand this to the girl in the black wagon with the Hello Kitty decals on it, since Hello Kitty is really a symbol for the Dark Lord so she’s obviously a sinner and needs to be saved,» but… do I care? Not really.
Anyway, I declined it again and drove off. I thought about calling the store, but do I really want to get anyone in trouble? No, but… I doubt I’ll be back there any time soon. I’m pretty sure I didn’t order a large French Vanilla regular with extra Jesus.
