Great ocean view! Eggs Benedict was fine but not spectacular. Same with the coffee. Nice staff.

Don’t come here if you have an allergy. My daughter can’t eat gluten and they didn’t even want to make a plain omelette for her. Really disappointing.

We had our 1^st breakfast here, it was great. No wonder there’s a wait. Great food, great price, and most of all great view.

This was the day we decided to head over to the southern most tip of Hawaii & the volcano heading out from Kona. If you’re hungry you’re not going to have too many choices from there on out, but the coffee shack is a good place to take care of that. It’s truly a shack on the side of a hill but with a great view and food. The parking situation isn’t the easiest to get to and there may be a little wait to get in, but it’s worth the wait & hassle to get in.

Holy smokes the view is to die for! I stop here every chance I get. Service is chill and friendly. Food is decent, my fave is the papaya with fruit and yogurt, but the omelette, pastries and honey iced coffee will not disappoint for the larger appetites. If you get a window seat put an open container of jelly out for the little salamanders if you wanna make some colorful friends. Aloha!

A perfect place for brunch with a spectacular view. I ordered the eggs and Portuguese sausage and made myself a sweet and savory bite with the luau toast & guava jam. Friendly staff and free refills on coffee.

We absolutely loved the food here! We came for breakfast and did not have dessert. Excellent breakfast, great service! The desserts looked wonderful but we were too full!

I’m gonna try to keep this short, since I really don’t want to waste much time on this mediocre (at best) place.
View: This is what you are paying for. If you want the view, just come have coffee and dessert, don’t bother with the rest.
Breakfast:
eggs ordered over easy: undercooked
Portuguese sausage: burnt, dry
luau bread: dry, tasteless
potatoes: not even hot. Tasted like 1 – 2 days old
papaya with yogurt: yogurt concoction tasty, but runny. Fruit: unripe. Absolutely NO excuse for unripe fruit in Hawaii. If the fruit is not in season DON“T serve it. Serve fruit in season!
coffee: fine. I ordered a café au lait, which, is suppose to be ¾ milk to ¼ coffee but the combination seemed more like ¾ coffee to ¼ milk.
service: laid back. the only thing that was satisfactory here.
We were going to order mac nut pie to go, but after our experience, didn’t really want to be further disappointed.

The biggest note here is there is substantial parking down a ramp to the left as you face the ocean that has no signage.
View is pretty spectacular, it’s south a visit just to enjoy brunch on a balcony overlooking the ocean.
Food is quite good, service is decent, and portions are American sized — you will not leave hungry.

Wow… Love the view from this place. The food was great. So was the service. I had the Ono Benedict with some sides… Also café latte. What else can I say… taste and see for yourself when in the area. Make sure to enjoy the scenery and just enjoy the atmosphere

Chicken salad sandwich; good, but not ground breaking. You come here for the pie, anyway. The mac-​nut pie was so good, and served warm and gooey.
The seating has amazing views of the ocean, and the geckos provide some entertainment while you take it all in.

The chicks that work here seem to be… hippy-​ish. That’s cool. Great ink on ya neck, girl.
I forgot how this place has THE best view of the land and ocean. No joke.
The Portuguese sausage, rice and bacon were reeeedic savory.
The coffee is… well, let’s say I had like 4 refills. Kona coffee rules.
BTW, you can feed the geckos, jelly, from the little packets. They love that stuff.

Ahi for breakfast… wha?! I just gobbled down the most delicious breakfast I had in years… ahi benedict with red onions, capers and a whole pile of deliciousness. My boyfriend had the papaya special. Equally delicious! Especially with the enormous gooey cinnamon bun on the side.
Aside from the food, the service was great as everyone was always on top of things… with a warm aloha smile. The view was AMAZING! And the surroundings of a lush garden and vibrant green geckos was a cute touch to remind you that YES you are in paradise!
I would definitely recommend a breakfast stop to the Coffeee Shack. If you’re staying in downtown Kona, it’s a gorgeous 25 minute drive south along the coast.

This place gets 5 stars because:
Awesome, friendly staff! They get you seated immediately and offer plenty of coffee which they make themselves from their own coffee beans.
Best views of the ocean. This was one of my favorite views.
I got the 3 egg omelette with ham and cheese. It came with your choice of bread and potatoes or rice. Definitely a fulfilling breakfast! The breakfast special also looked really good, but I’ll save it for next time.
Finally, bonus points for the Geckos chilling on the balcony.

My favorite breakfast while on the island, and probably my most memorable meal during our trip because of the experience and view. Our trip was two years ago, but I remember the macadamia nut french toast and the view of the coffee field/​ocean.
We came here fairly early-​probably around 8:30am and were able to eat by the window. This was our breakfast stop along the way to the Volcano Nat. l park that day.
I loved this place.
Parking lot is very small and we had to park on the side of the road.

During a trip to the Big Island 1 ½ years ago, my friend Terri and I learned about this little restaurant called The Coffee Shack on Unilocal.It was so good that we had to eat there twice during our one week on the island.
From the outside, it does look like a little shack. There is a great patio with beautiful views of the ocean. And… if you like geckos, this is the place for you! (no.not to eat silly… the colorful critters like to sun themselves on the railings nearby)
On my first visit, I ordered the grilled Ono sandwich. It was served on «luau bread» which was to die for. You might be asking what is luau bread? Well, let me tell you, it is this moist, tasty bread made with macadamia nuts, carrots, pineapple and coconut. I loved it so much that I ordered a few slices to take with me to eat for breakfast during the upcoming mornings.
The second time we ate at The Coffee Shack, we had breakfast. I ordered the eggs benedict on my beloved luau bread and I was not disappointed.
Why oh why can’t there be a Coffee Shack in California?

We spent several days listening to locals tell us the best breakfast on the island was at Hawaiian Style Café. After eating breakfast there, we quickly figured out best is a translation for most affordable on an expensive island and largest portions. Disappoint sunk in. Meanwhile, the Coffee Shack wasn’t a letdown. While sporting an incredible view, great service and affordability, the food rivals the other strong points. This was the best breakfast that we found on the Big Island — by a mile. I’m sure you’ll be impressed, too.
The Coffee Shack isn’t a fancy café, rather a laid back spot with a deck overlooking the Pacific Ocean and set amidst a lush forest. You’ll be greeted by gecos as you sit coffee and fresh squeezed juices and wait for your meal. In addition to impressive breakfast items the baked goods are top-​notch, too, but I’m guessing you’ll be too full to eat a meal and try the pastries.
We only came for breakfast. However, there’s several items I’d recommend. Start with the french toast made with homemade luau bread or the papaya special. Let’s face it, you can get bacon and eggs anywhere. If there’s two of you, split those two meals. You’ll enjoy every bite.

The Coffee Shack is a great nostalgia spot for me. After several trips to the Big Island, this old school roadside café in the misty mountains of Captain Cook is one of those spots that gets stuck in your memory.
Sure its got good breakfast foods: giant cinnamon rolls with oozy topping, coconut cake (of the bready breakfast variety) cheesy scrambled eggs, spicy portuguese sausage, kona coffee (or expresso drinks), ripe papaya with honey yogurt and toasted coconut. It has all these things.
But on top of this its got one of the best (and admittedly one of the more precarious feeling) settings on a steep roadside cliff looking down over the foggy fields of hibiscus, coffee plants and coastline that make up Captain Cook, outside of Kona.
I don’t know if this is the best breakfast on the island, but it is still my favorite. From the geckos being enticed with jelly to come up and visit on the banister, to the insane view, to the llilikoa (passionfruit) cheese cake that you can take to go, this place is memorable.
Service is friendly, but no nonsense. Depending on your waitress, it would not be unusual to get a friendly but brusque threat to return later if you don’t order quickly. Time is a-​wasting. But truth be told, I still find untold charm in its frank locals approach, generous servings and its jaw-​droppingly beautiful situation overhanging the Kona coast.

This is the second time I’ve been to The Coffee Shack. The first time was back in 2012 and we found this place in one of our Hawaii books. My husband got this omelet with Portuguese sausage, spinach, mushrooms, cheese, onions and avocado, it was divine with their 100% Kona coffee. It was full of magical flavors that we didn’t need any pepper or tabasco sauce. I got this Hawaiian fried rice with Portuguese sausage egg scrambled in it and sweet Maui onions. It was also full of flavor that I didn’t need any condiments. The view was magnificent and the staff was more then welcoming. Watching the little geckos walking around was the cutest creatures.
Here, two years later we were excited to come again and bring our 7 year old son and 5 year old daughter to let them know why we love Hawaii. Their special wasn’t anything special. I think they had a fish omelet and I don’t see fish and eggs making a good combination and nothing else on the menu really looked special or Hawaiian to me. So I got the Portuguese sausage, eggs, home fries and luau toast. My husband got the chicken salad sandwich (yes, very exciting, NOT!). My kids shared the pepperoni pizza (thick, dense crust that did not look appetizing).
I told myself that we can give this place another chance when we go back later this year, but there are other great breakfast places that we rather go instead. The three stars are only for the view, staff and geckos.
