Shiro of Japan of Carle Place and Glendale (The Shops at Atlas Park) New York, have the reputation for providing patrons with an exceptional and authentic Japanese dining experience at affordable prices. The restaurant has more than a thirty year tradition of setting dining trends and providing exceptional service.

Shiro of Japan was founded on the tradition of «true» Japanese hibachi steak house, a concept that introduced America to the cooking art form known as teppanyaki. In Japanese, teppan means an «iron plate» or a «steel sheet,» and yaki, «stir-​fried food» or «stir-​frying.» The teppanyaki and hibachi styles, come together to create a mouth-​watering form of cuisine that continues to increase in popularity in the New York region and across the nation.

Shiro, the Japanese word for «castle,» was selected for its imagery and desire to provide exceptional food and service. An image of the largest remaining medieval castle in Japan was chosen for the restaurant’s logo.

Business Owner

Hiro Ishikawa immigrated to the United States from Japan in the early 1970s and immediately gravitated towards the restaurant industry simply because he enjoyed being with people, sharing his food and demonstrating his food preparation. In 1976, Ishikawa took over Kamehachi in New York City, where he had been working, and became a restaurant entrepreneur. In 1979, he brought sushi to Long Island and opened Rockville Centre’s Taiko, Long Island’s first Japanese restaurant with a dedicated sushi bar. With a keen eye for fine fish and the goal to find new ways to introduce sushi to more people, Ishikawa founded his seafood distributing company in 1980. Today, Ishikawa Seafood provides the highest-​quality sushi-​grade fish to the finest sushi and Japanese dining rooms across the region. In 2003, Ishikawa and his partner, Peter Faccibene acquired Shiro of Japan, the region’s first Japanese hibachi steakhouse and sushi restaurant. The Shiro of Japan story takes off from there…
