Dexter’s Deli is the original health food store for dogs and cats and is the next generation of pet supply stores. Providing the best in natural alternative diets, up-​to-​date nutritional information, fresh homemade foods and snacks, cool collars, and the wildest toys and gifts.

We specialize in offering products and information on fresh food diets, and have one of the largest selections of prepared raw food diets in the county. We also have all the natural supplements, add-​ins, and foods needed to prepare nutritious home-​cooked diets for your pets.

At Dexter’s Deli we take pride in what we do and who we are. We’re not a national chain store, we’re just a neighborhood pet store with a twist! We like to treat every pet like family, so we’ll bend over backwards to accommodate you and your pet’s needs.

Established in 1996.

It’s always been my goal with Dexter’s Deli to provide the very best in what is new & natural for our dogs and cats, & that doesn’t always mean carrying products because they are «popular» or «best sellers.» We take the time to do the research behind the products & the information we offer.

We’ve been specializing in raw, holistic, natural foods for dogs and cats since 1996. Serving North San Diego County with stores in Del Mar, Carlsbad, & San Marcos, it’s always gratifying to hear from our customers that we’re doing a great job providing the best in natural foods, supplements, and other awesome products for their pets.

Business Owner

Originally from Orange County, California, Tori moved to Del Mar from St. Louis, Missouri in 1996 to open a natural pet store. «I immediately fell in love with this dog-​friendly town where there were dogs on every corner,» she says. Dexter’s Deli was the very first store in San Diego to sell natural foods for pets and has since helped pioneer the health food movement for pets in San Diego. She has been feeding her own pets a fresh raw food diet for 16 years and has a background in nutrition. Along with owning Dexter’s Deli, Tori has a second full-​time job at home with 2 young children. Tori’s follows a natural holistic lifestyle for herself, her family, and business.

We love this place! Friendly people — the owner (Toby) is very knowledgeable about raw for dogs. They’ll do special orders and call you promptly when it comes in. Make sure you get a card so you get a little discount when you come back.

So happy to have found this local pet health food store. We initially came in for a birthday cake, which they have plenty stocked in their refrigerator in small and medium sizes along with cupcakes for cheaper prices than I’ve paid at other pet speciality stores. In addition, their staff is very helpful and attentive. I’ll definitely be back to look into going raw for my dachshund as they have the largest variety I’ve ever seen.

Awesome little place. It was my dogs birthday today. My friend recommended the place to me. Lots of cool little things to chew on. They have these little cupcakes for dogs and even had a birthday cake. My dogs loved them! Also just for checking in you get a 5% discount. The girls that were in there are super helpful and like to chat all about your pet. Cool place

A little pricey, but they are the only place where I can find a specific treat for my babies.
The staff is nice and informative. They offer in store «bucks» which is nice. It develops a loyalty. I trust them in their selection of products. They seem to genuinely care about the products that go into pets including their own.

This is an amazing store! There staff know anything and everything there is to know about there products! My dog is very sensitive to certain things in dog food and they spent a lot of time helping me and answering ever single question and concern I had for my little guy! If you love your pet you need to bring them here and get them all the best stuff there is for your furry friends!

I live right up the street from this location now and love it. It is a cute little shop with great items and friendly service. I just adopted a cat in January and they have always been helpful picking out items for her. I can also get Primal raw food for her here too which is the brand I used to feed my dog. Their rewards program and getting a little money back on purchases is a nice touch as well.

I highly recommend this place. This place even sets a bowl of water out for you pet to enjoy if they get thirsty. The staff was very professional and friendly. They have delicious cakes, cupcakes and doggie ice cream for you fury friend to enjoy. I normally don’t write reviews but I just had to for this place. I was expecting to pay $ 80 but instead I ended up paying $ 44 for a brand new vest 2 delicious doggie cupcakes and a pint of doggie ice cream. Def worth it and I’m glad I went with my fury friend we will def be going back for more.

Dexter’s Deli is such a cute pet store. They always have a good variety for a small store and your dog is treated well! My favorite part is the after holiday sale — where you can snag a good deal on holiday goods for your pet! Great specialty section and love the portable water bottles that I haven’t seen anywhere else. Prices may be a bit hire than other places but some of the unique products make up for this.

Went in to buy my dog a cake for her birthday this past February. Had never been there before and was treated with great costumer service. They wrote my dog’s name on her cake, and put it in a box with a bow! I wasn’t expecting her name on the cake or a cute bow. She shared her cake with 2 other dogs and they all loved it.

I’ve been shopping at Dexter’s since 2008. Most of the employees here are AWESOME, extremely helpful, and genuinely friendly. I’ve actually learned alot from them and have become a smarter pet parent. They are incredibly knowledgeable and most of them go out of their way to help you. They have an incredible selection of products. Every time I visit them, they always direct me to exactly what I need.
The one girl you have answering phones during the day… she missed out on having the super helpful, friendly Dexter’s Deli attitude that the rest of the staff has. Giving Dexter’s a 5 star because I don’t believe 1 sour apple needs to spoil the bunch. (but that employee is not Dexter’s Deli material) Josh & Jamie are for sure your star employees! Jytte is always super helpful too!

The staff always greets us with treats, and is so knowledgeable. I come in with all sorts of questions. They genuinely want to help you and will give you samples until you find something that you like.

This is one of my most favorite places to go for dog food! I come in every week basically and the staff is nothing less than kind as pie.
It is a really small shop but they are all knowledgable and are always willing to answer questions if you have them! Plus they have great recommendations.
Their raw selection is awesome too. They have a lot of different proteins to select from and supplemental stuff such as tripe, and only organs too. I really recommend the raw bones too.

I have been a little more crazy than your average «dog mom» these past three years ever since I had a puppy to call my own, Charles. I love spoiling him with little treats and toys and Dexters Deli is the perfect place to indulge. I have bought him a birthday cake the last three years and he always loves it! I usually get the peanut butter flavor (which I have been told is for humans too, but I’ve never tried). They wrote Happy Birthday on the cake and wrote Charles’ name on the bottom of the cake, so sweet.
They also have fresh refrigerated pet food which I don’t get for my fur child but I always see many people buying it when I’m there.
The staff is so sweet and takes a genuine interest in your pet. I will be coming here for years to come to pick up treats, baked goods and adorable toys for my fur child.

Finally I found a reliable place with accommodating hours that carries the food I need for my baby.
Between locations & my work hours its always a pain when you are running low on food and high on time at work and coordinating your own life when you’d just like a place close by, with friendly staff and the right product to just pop up and save your life.
I found it. I love it.
I will have a hard time not supporting my other favorite places as often but, hey. you should take notes from this business. They stay open for people who have a life that coincides with their dogs high demand for holistic’s and nurturing.

My boyfriend and I stopped in here just because we noticed it as we were on our way to dinner and neither of us have been in before.
First, we were not greeted by either of the two women who were working. One of them was at the register just stood there looking preoccupied (there were no other customers at this point). The least she could have said is «hello».
The store has some really cute dog accessories and cool looking bakery items for your fluffy one! The cupcakes look tasty, I’m sure my dogs would’ve appreciated one (but I got them a collar with jingle-​Bells on it instead).
As I was approaching the register with the cute Christmas collar for my little dog, a customer walked in and asked the lady at the register, «can I exchange this bag for another?» And the employee told her «yes.» So I assumed that this customer would be helped before me and I would be waiting my turn while the customer looked around for a different bag… BUT I was proved wrong because the very rude cashier looked at me and said «Well are you ready or not? Just walk up.» I’m sorry that I was unaware you were NOT going to be helping the lady who was in line before me.
I left very very disappointed with such rude service but I know where to go if I ever want to get my dogs some baked goods! Orrrr torture them with more collars that have bells on them :)
