BEST FAMILY GYM!
My family and I have begun our BJJ journey and couldn’t have found a better place to do so as a family. My daughters, 8 and 5, are very much taking it in as their sport and enjoy every class. They wake up asking if we are going to Roll today and are upset on the days we can’t make it. I have been wanting to join a BJJ gym for about a year and went to 5 different gyms to try them out (Very advisable to do). I get great lessons and techniques as I saw in the other more competitive gyms but without the egos. Typically you get a lot of egos especially with higher belts, but that has not been the case at all here at the Gracie Barra Carlsbad. My wife and I have been fitness nuts for the past 5 years and felt very in shape coming into our first class only to find out that our strength was nothing on the mat and are experiencing a workout that has surpassed our Superset filled, heavy lifting gyms sessions that were only geared to become more aesthetic. Functional strength… get at it! I hope my wife writes a review so I don’t speak for her but its a very Women friendly gym, all the guys are respectful and there is no weirdness even when your wife is rolling with other sweaty dudes to get them in an armbar. Lastly and most importantly the key Elements to this gym are the Professors. Aaron is such a stand up gentleman with a true gift of not only teaching adults but really keeping the kids inspired and into it. He really takes to the to get to know his students and makes everyone feel like a close friend. Hope to see your friendly face on the mat!

Was in town for business and found this gym right down the street from my hotel. Dropped an email a couple days ahead to see if I could train. Professor Aaron was welcoming and friendly, I signed a quick waiver, and I was in. Great facilities: changing room, kids room w tv, and tons of mat space. Everyone was friendly and tight and technical with their rolls. Will definitely stop by again the next time I’m in town.

It’s official, my family is hooked on BJJ and on Gracie Barra Carlsbad! My husband and I had tried out several different BJJ gyms around North County and none made us feel more welcome than Gracie Barra Carlsbad. Our daughters (ages 5 & 8) both love going to their class and have already made so many new friends. Coach Aaron has a real talent for teaching those young and old. Another great thing about GB Carlsbad is that there is a healthy group of ladies that train here. The overall environment is accepting, family friendly and extremely supportive. I’m so glad we found Gracie Barra Carlsbad and the great group of people who train there!

I cannot say enough about Professor Aaron Collins. We tried another facility a couple years ago that completely turned my oldest son Takoma off from training at all, after just 1 session at Gracie Barra Carlsbad he was hooked, and is now committed to learning Jiu-​Jitsu. Professor Aaron’s love of Jiu jitsu and its values radiates when speaking with him, he goes over and beyond to make you comfortable with the program. I was more than impressed with his passion for teaching the kids. I am so thankful our friends found this facility and brought us in. Two of my kids started at Gracie Barra in 2012, at ages 6 and 8. We had tried other martial arts, and the kids would kind of get tired of them after the first or second class because it was a lot of standing around and listening to the sensei.
After the first class at Gracie Barra Carlsbad, my kids were hooked!
Here are a few things to notice:
1) There are usually at least 3 adult coaches out there helping with each kids class. No other school had that kind attention for the kids.
2) The kids pair up and get hands-​on about 5 minutes into the class. They practice together, and they make friends almost instantly.
3) The professors and coaches are so patient and fun with the kids. If you watch the kids, they gravitate towards the professors and coaches because they are fun and respectful of the children.
I sat there for about 6 months watching my kids having a blast, getting stronger, learning self defense, gaining confidence, and making friends. Finally, I decided that I needed to get out on the mats and try it myself. I have never regretted it. Not once.
Jiu Jitsu is something that my whole family practices now. This Gracie Barra in Carlsbad is full of kind, brave, and strong individuals and families that are positive, encouraging, and build each other up. The people that come to the gym are top-​notch professionals, and conduct themselves with kindness and respect. Even while they are choking you out. ;)
Truly, this gym has changed our lives. We can’t say enough good things about the people and the sport.

My son takes lessons at Gracie Barra and really enjoys learning the techniques. Great instructors, fun and clean environment. My son is in 9^th grade and is the engineer type. This is a perfect sport for challenging his mind and provides a great workout.

My girlfriend put together a self defense night together for our friends here and it was amazing!!! The three gentlemen that trained us were very professional, knowledgable and best of all FUN!!! I would recommend coming here to anyone. I found out that they also train kids and I am eager to share this with experience with my son.

I attended a self defense class here with a group of friends for a girls night. It was a really fun and informative experience! All four instructors were very nice and taught us a lot in a short amount of time. I’m looking forward to going back and learning more about self defense and also getting my boys over there for some classes this summer.

My son started training here about 5 months ago after winding down from his spring folkstyle wrestling program. Jujitsu has helped him immensely with new ground skills. Instructors are awesome, parents are friendly and it is family oriented — Kids play area while waiting, parents night out etc.
The students are taught respect and there are varying belt ranks offering a variety of challenge for beginners to start any time. I am consistently impressed with the higher belt rank kids teaching my son how to avoid situations rather than just tying him in a pretzel and making him tap. ;)

The Carlsbad school is a first rate representation of the class, friendliness and experience that is Gracie Barra. Whether you are a first time visitor or an experienced jiu jitsu practitioner, you have a place on the mat, respect by all students and in the best place to learn BJJ, get in shape and have fun. I get up and train Brazilian Jiu-​jitsu because I wanted to be fit, learn and have fun. Gracie Barra Carlsbad has been an ideal place to develop valuable skills while training in a top-​quality environment.

My daughters had been taking Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Encinitas from about age 10 & 11 in the kids class. We moved to Carlsbad recently and checked out the new Gracie Barra Jiu-​Jitsu facility after taking the summer off of classes. My 2 girls are now 14 and 15 years old at the time of this post and can’t really train with the kids class anymore. I was worried they wouldn’t be comfortable training with adults.
Two interesting things happened:
1.) I finally gave it a try myself. Wished I didn’t wait so long to do it. I absolutely love it. Everyone in the class is so helpful and it’s a seriously great workout.
2. I started bringing the girls to the adult class with me. That led to a pile of teenage boys in the class and now we have a great mix of adults and teens in all weight ranges to spar with.
I love the way they teach us a technique or two, break it down slowly and then we get to train with a partner at full speed to submission. No other martial art can prepare someone (girls especially) to be comfortable with a larger, stronger person trying to control them. They know exactly what it feels like to have a much heavier, stronger person on top of them and what to do about it. 20% of females report being assaulted by college age. That’s scary. Get yourself and your girls into the classes. See you there!

Every class I’ve been to has had an excellent vibe. All of the students I’ve trained with are friendly with great attitudes, and everybody is committed to practicing technique or perfecting their game. It’s one of the most intense workouts you’ll ever do, but it’s completely fulfilling.
Yes, you will sweat.
Monday/​Wednesday lunch sessions are where it’s at for all of you that find it hard to get away after normal working hours. Myself and a few coworkers hit this session consistently, so it’s a nice way to break up your work day.
Also, you should tell me if my Unilocal review was what convinced you to roll. I would probably get some weird nerdy kick out of that. I might even let you submit me. Maybe.

I have been training at Gracie Barra Carlsbad for about two years now. It’s a great gym. The lead instructor, Professor Aaron, has incredible technical skills as well as the ability to easily communicate details to his students.
The gym has high ceilings, lots of light and roll up doors so there is always a breeze blowing through. (Considering my last gym in New York City was in the basement of a high rise, the breeze is an incredible plus.) For anyone who is slightly unnerved at the idea of training in a new martial art I can tell you that the gym is modern, extremely clean, and filled with great training partners who are there to learn.
I recommended the gym to my neighbor to get his son into classes and they love it as well.

Based on a number of recommendations from friends I checked this place out. I was looking for an activity for my two boys to get involved with in between their existing sport commitments. I was taken back by their supportive environment, their commitment to educate, and how proficient they were at their craft. I ended up joining myself :) Its a nice slice of life I get to share with my kids.
If you are looking for a place to train or are just a bit curious about BJJ, I highly recommend walking into Gracie Barra Carlsbad.

I trained at Gracie Barra Carlsbad two weeks ago with Professor Aaron Collins. (I live in South Pasadena and train at Gracie Barra Pasadena.) This is a new, super-​clean facility with ample free parking. The training led by Professor Collins was truly first rate. If I lived in the area, I would definitely train here!
The GB Carlsbad members were a really nice group of guys and the young kids that train there said they loved learning jiu-​jitsu there.
As a GB member I was not charged for training with them even though I offered a donation for the dojo.

I started training at Gracie Barra Encintas about 6 years ago which is an awesome place to train. When Gracie Barra Carlsbad opened I was so happy because it was so close to my house and they have 12:00 noon classes Monday and Wednesday which works perfect for my schedule. The mat space is great, big roll up doors means lots of fresh air. All the instructors are great and really know there stuff. Also, they have a small play are for kids which is really nice because I can take my 3 year old son with me on Saturdays.

When two ladies were killed years ago by a mugger on a running trail, I wanted my daughter to learn how to defend herself. So I chose Brazilian Jiu Jitsu since this art uses leverage and not strength to defend yourself with, especially since most fights or women that get attached end up on the ground and Jiu Jitsu is a self defense ground art.
My daughter and I joined a couple of years ago. I couldn’t be happier. The instructors are fantastic. There is a family atmosphere to their location, which is refreshing to see.
My daughter, now 14, has enjoyed every class. She submits boys larger than her on a regular basis, which has really increased her confidence that she can handle herself, god forbid if she was ever attacked. She also enjoys competing in their local competitions.
Also, the fact that I can go to ANY Gracie Barra location really helps with my work schedule since I sometines bring my daughter with me to work. This location is actually closer that the Encinitas location where we originally signed up.
Taking classes at Gracie Barra is the perfect way for you or your children to learn a great self defense art that will build up ones self confidence.
