Specialties
Roy Kerckhoffs Art specializes in hand-painted black and white photographs. I love bold textures as these are created by passing time, therefore putting emphasis on bygone days. In particular, I aim to show the history and beauty that exists in human-made wooden, concrete and steel structures contrasting with soft organic forms from nature. To obtain my goal I portray these in high-contrast black and white photographs. I either selectively or fully hand color the photographs with photo oils, using similar techniques as in the early previous century. My frames receive special attention, such that the final product is an integrated whole. If you’re looking for commissioned work (your favorite spot, portraits on location), I can add that extra personal touch through my hand coloring process. Roy Kerckhoffs Art is formerly known as Eyeball Photography.

History
Established in 2008.
Early on, I was interested in visual arts: my father taught me to draw when I was 3 – 4 years old. I became fascinated by the paintings of the Dutch Masters and later I became interested in photography when my parents bought a small point-and-shoot camera for me when I was 10. In 2003 I moved to San Diego, CA to become a researcher at the department of Bioengineering at the University of California San Diego. In 2008, I founded Eyeball Photography with my wife Marie (www.eyeballphotography.com), now Roy Kerckhoffs Art. Since then I have exhibited my work in galleries, businesses and restaurants in the greater San Diego area. In 2010 I started participating in art festivals and street fairs throughout Southern California and Arizona and have won awards for my work at these events. Two of my pieces decorate all the guest rooms in the new Hilton Carlsbad Oceanfront Resort & Spa, which opened in 2012.

Business Owner
Born in Geleen, the Netherlands, 1973, early on, I was interested in visual arts: my father taught me to draw when I was 3 – 4 years old. I became fascinated by the paintings of the Dutch Masters and later I became interested in photography when my parents bought a small point-and-shoot camera for me when I was about 10. I moved to San Diego, CA in 2003 to become a scientist at the University of California San Diego (I have a PhD in bioengineering). As a self-taught photographer, I founded Eyeball Photography with my wife Marie in 2008, which became Roy Kerckhoffs Art in 2014. Also early in that year I gave up my profession and career as a scientist to pursue a full time career as an artist/photographer. On December 1st, 2015 I opened my studio in Carlsbad, CA.
