History

Established in 1982.

Award-​winning architect Thomas Bateman Hood established his private practice in Winnetka IL as a design/​build firm.

After relocating to California in 1984, Mr. Hood served over five years on local planning boards in Marin County, including three terms as Chairman of the Larkspur Design Review Board.

Projects have been chosen for photo shoots for Pottery Barn Gap, AT&T, Restoration Hardware, and more. Mr. Hood’s work has been featured on HGTV.

After relocating to the Monterey Peninsula, the firm was selected as the architect for the Sunset Idea House in Monterey.

Project locations include Georgia, North Carolina, Canada, Arizona, and Monterey, Plumas, Sonoma and Marin Counties in California.

We engaged Thomas’ firm for our first house and he did a wonderful job or design and construction for our remodeling project. When we moved to larger home in the historic district several years later, We relied again on Thomas for his extensive knowledge of local history and skill with not only older buildings, but also in the interior reconfiguration of living spaces, kitchen and circulation to make it a more functional home for our family of four. His drawings were concise and allowed the contractor to complete the project while we stayed in the house through construction. He also designed an outdoor area that to this day we enjoy every summer, inviting Thomas to join us for a get together in the house he helped make our favorite home. His passion for his work and skill as both an architect and contractor made for an exciting and successful project.

Tom Hood is one of the best in the business and it was a pleasure to work with this man. He recently completed an amazing design for us near Sacramento, on time, within budget, and we could not have been happier. I can say that during the entire process he was professional, prompt, exact and totally impressive while doing the job. His attention to detail and customer service was awesome. When I called him on the phone he either answered immediately or called me back soon thereafter.
One of the best things about having Tom do our project was that he was totally involved and passionate about what WE wanted. He was also patient beyond belief when we asked him to change multiple sections. His price was right as well.
I would recommend Tom Hood to anyone who wants a project done right. He’s a true professional and he is very easy to work with.

Thomas Bateman Hood is a terrible architect. He failed to complete our project, even though he took our money. He is incompetent as a project manager; he went 4-​times over budget and then wanted to apply bandaid fixes to avoid starting over. He alienated our other service professionals with his prima donna attitude. He became extremely childish saying «I’m not going to work for free» even though we had already paid his contract in full. Last but not least, he gossiped about us to other professionals with whom we were trying to do business; his lack of professionalism is shocking.
Do not hire Thomas Bateman Hood. He will take your money and leave you with nothing. Unless of course, you have unlimited funds and can tolerate his behavior and don’t care about your working relationship with your contractor and others.
