Platt Hill Nursery

Buyer beware–
If you buy firewood from this company plan on seasoning the wood for a year before burning.
This is the third, and final time I will purchase their firewood because it will not burn.
I have a gas flame starter and even after two hours of using the gas this wood would only sizzle.
They must know their wood is too fresh to burn so the only conclusion is that they simply do not care.
I left lumberjacks because their pieces were too small but they are larger now and they actually dry their wood for their customers.
Platt charges a premium price for their firewood and is laughing their way to the bank…
I really don’t care that they seem very arrogant and are rude, just wanted to purchase firewood that would burn in my fireplace.

The attitude, with few exceptions, seems contagiously bad! Teach your employees to at least smile and act like the customer base is important to you.
I have walked out of the store for the last time, never to return for fear of catching whatever ailment is going on within both stores. The stores are beautiful and plentiful with inventory, but the strong feeling of bother to the staff by being their customer has finally directed me away forever to find a similar environment I can feel appreciated in.
Adiós, Platt Hill, and good luck with your lack of customer appreciation!

Wish I had read the reviews before I purchased some very pricey tropicals from Platt Hill. The plants started wilting within ten days of the purchase. Took them back with the receipt and was told very rudely that I should have read the notice they have posted that returns can only be done within 7 days. A couple of Managers came by and repeated what the cashier had said. Huge attitude problem.
We spend about $ 1500 — $ 2000 dollars on plants annually and will NEVER, EVER, BUY ANYTHING FROM PLATT HILL AGAIN.
A word to the wise, STAY AWAY.

I’ve spent thousands of dollars at Platt Hill. I love their merchandise even if I can purchase directly from McKay Nursery in Wisconsin where much of their merchandise comes from. The problem I’ve had with Platt Hill for 35 years is their employees except for Marianne and Paula who are kind and helpful. They are condescending and rude. It seems to be rather systemic. I agree with another review is that Erin is also condescending. She is a know it all and will eventually mature and get over herself. If it were not for their beautiful nursery and my love of all that is green, I would never go there. The employees need a huge lesson in polite customer service which I receive more of from Wal-​Mart and Home Depot.

Stopped in the other day looking for a plant. We were directed to a girl named Erin. My girlfriend asked what seemed like a simple question and Erin’s response was somewhat condescending and rude. The customer may not always be right, but they are always the customer.

READ THE OTHER REVIEWS! i wish I had before purchasing from them, bought a Japanese Maple 1 month ago, had it planted and it is dying! When I went in to talk with them about it got the same rude response from just about everyone that works there. Very condescending, the Nursery Manger did not even call me back. They do not care about the customer once the sale is made and I know another family that
just experienced the same issue. Their stuff is junk and it if overpriced! Will NEVER shop there again!

Nice selection of flowers but they are extremely pricey, I will stick to menards…

I love this store. I bought a very large tree from them when they were on Rt 72 in Dundee. It is a beautiful tree, it has almost tripled in size. When I am looking for something specific or special, I know that I will find it here. Maybe a little more expensive, but the quality is great.
As long as they are around, I will be stopping in to see what is new!

I bought some sod and topsoil from these guys a couple weeks ago also bought some overpriced metal stakes in the event that I needed them cuz I was putting sod on a slope. Figured I could return them if I didn’t use them. I just looked at their return policy and see that I own them for life now so caution only buy what you’re going to use. I’ll be going elsewhere for my future needs.

We called looking for terra-​cotta pot, and we were told that they have them in stock in the size that we were looking for. The sales person then told us that she didn’t know what the price was because she was in the front and they were in the back, and she never offered to go check the actual price. We decided to go anyways and found out that these pots were twice the price as anywhere else.
We were also interested in finding oak leaf hydrangea plants for our front yard and decided to check out Platt Hill to see what their selection was. Their plants outside were also more expensive than anywhere else that I’ve looked, and so I think we will go elsewhere.

Warning!!! Do not buy anything from Platt Hill! I bought a large four trunk birch tree in May and paid to have them deliver and plant the tree. Less than one month later one of the four trunks died. Since there was a guarantee I went in for an adjustment or replacement. They were very uninterested and didn’t seem to care at all. Someone would call me they said. No one did. I went back three times. Finally they sent someone out to take a picture and said someone would call me. No one did. As a last effort I called and left a message on Mr. Hill’s voice mail… guess what… Mr. Hill did not call back.
I wish I could not give any stars on this review, they do not deserve even one. Go anywhere else, they want your business more than Platt Hill does.
***July, 2015 Follow-​up to the above review: Platt Hill nursery is trying to make things right. One year later I received a phone call from the nursery saying that they were checking up on some people who «fell between the cracks» last year. They seemed interested in trying to take care of the problem and make me happy. They did offer to replace the tree, however I decided to keep it because three of the four trunks looked fine. They let me pick out some roses and geraniums for this season at no charge in exchange for keeping the tree. They also came out and cut off the dead trunk. They then called back to check and see if everything was ok now. They told me I was right in being upset and they were wrong to ignore me. I just wish it didn’t take a bad Unilocal review to get things done. I would say that Platt Hill Nursery is trying to change things for the better — give them a chance.

I love this place to fill our flower beds and garden. They have every kind of plant and tree possible. I wouldn’t buy from the store part, as it is too expensive. I have grown their flowers and plants for two years and their products are much stronger than Menard’s. Try them out, you won’t be disappointed!

Selection 5 stars. Price 4 stars. Service 2 stars. Love the selection here, but employees are hard to come by & seem bothered to help. The positives… Our plants hold up, especially the trees we’ve planted. We expected a year or two of shock, especially after the long winter, but they survived & are budding beautifully. The location is convenient & we usually find what we need. Negatives… Allow a little extra time because service is slow. Cashiers are wonderful. They could staff more workers in the greenhouses. The guys who work out by the trees & landscaping supplies could use a little motivating when it comes to friendly service.

The store was not busy at all (Friday afternoon) and everyone seemed bothered that they had to help us out. Very poor customer service. Will not be back.

My wife and I have been shopping at Platt Hill since before they moved to this location over a decade ago.
The employees here are helpful, knowledgeable, and always willing to give advice. The prices here are really good — we have been to other nurseries in the area, but Platt Hill’s prices are almost always the lowest, yet their quality is top-​notch.

In 2010, we bought 4 trees; a cherry blossom, 2 pears and an oak tree. Only the oak tree is looking good. We were told in 2011 the pear trees would bear fruits. It’s spring of 2013 and have not seen any fruits! The biggest disappointment, is the cherry blossom. Every cherry tree is beautifully blossomed in my neighborhood, EXCEPT MY CHERRY TREE! Mine has no leaves too yet and it is May! Every time I have been to Platt Hill, they just want to recommend a fertilizer, which we have used… BTW, I had paid a ton of money to be professionally planted by them.
Choice is yours, but I will keep away from this nursery.

Recently purchased several fall plants (mostly mums), one was dying by day 2. I called them and asked what the return policy was (I had heard that HD had a great plant return policty and I had mistakenly assumed that a well-​known and local nursery would do the same) and they advised me to «make sure» it was «completely gone» before I bothered to bring it back to them. Seemed odd, but fine. Brought it back after trying for nearly 5 days to rally the poor thing. The teenagers that work there, well, they could really give a rats’ booty about helping you, as I soon found out when I tried to talk to them about returning my now-​dead mum.
I had been told I’d get 50% back on my purchase, which I felt was unfair, but whatever. What I didn’t know, was that was 50% store CREDIT, not your money back. I politely argued the point with the «manager» and not only did he suggest that perhaps I did something TO the plant, he then went on to chastise me for not returning it, promptly. I explained why I didn’t bring it back immediately, based on what I was told by one of the employees, but to no avail.
To be honest, a $ 5 credit towards another plant does very little for me and I told him so… but it was the principle of the thing, you know?
He made a big show of examining my license for the return and when I finally snapped at him to get it back, he took his time handing it over. This wanker is a first class jerk and if I could give this place a ZERO I surely would.
I’ll go back to Lowe’s, Home Depot and hell, even Wal-​mart before I step foot in that place again… oh ya, the credit? I took it, reached over for the scissors and cut it up in the moron’s face. The look alone was worth the gas and time to drive down there.
Buyer beware…

I have been to Platt Hill just a few times and it’s always the same. You can’t find anyone to help and if you do, they act too bothered to assist. My most recent experiences involved a small purchase and then a few weeks later a return. I was checked out by the same girl who could care less about customer service. I was beyond their return policy, which I didn’t know as it is not printed on the receipt. The manager agreed to return the item but made sure to point out the return policy on the wall. That’s fine if it’s their policy, but don’t act like I am a jerk for not knowing it. I am pretty much done shopping there.

Platt Hill could grab a fourth star pretty easily. This business has a lot going for it, but the drawbacks are all on my list of Bad Things I Do Not Like. First, the good…
My husband buys his mother a flowering basket each year on mothers day. Platt Hill is more or less on our way to see her, so for the past few years we’ve been coming here to get them. The selection of flowering baskets is pretty good, with several options for size, color, and price point. Their parking lot is big enough to accommodate the insane rush for these baskets but has landscaped islands throughout, which is good for the environment as well as for keeping drifting carts from bashing into cars. If you want to buy a bush or something else too big for a cart, you can grab a little red wagon instead – very cute, very practical. I was also interested to see many gifts such as candles, aprons, baby clothes, and jewelry in the indoor area. This part of Platt also has about a million kinds of pot for indoor houseplants.
BUT
We couldn’t find a single employee to help us while we wandered laps around the place, trying to make sense of what baskets were in what places. Many were in a greenhouse, but others were outside, in doorways to other places, etc. We could only locate one of the kind of basket we liked best and were curious if some were in another area, perhaps with other colors. We could not, however, find anybody to ask. Our primary encounter with the staff (you know, beyond somebody collecting carts in the lot when we first arrived or making eye contact with somebody at the florist/​wrapping station) occurred at the register, and while she was fast and friendly, we had been there long enough and were ready to leave. We did not want to pull her from her line to help us, then wait to pay all over again. This holiday is one of the busiest of the year for a nursery or garden center, and they should have additional staff to reflect this.
Then, of course, comes my constant gripe about nurseries. What about native plants?!? There were some, of course, but they didn’t have signage reflecting this or a section just for native species. I saw them in the greenhouse alongside indoor exotics and what are technically outdoor exotics as well as in a few places outside. The organization here is random in some sections and by sun/​shade recommendations in others. Despite a good number of informational signs near almost every species, I did not see ONE that said where the plants were from, if they were native, if they were compatible with an organic garden, etc. Native salvia was next to orchids as if you might plant them side by side in your flowerbed. I know a few things about planting native species, but even I would have had a hard time figuring out the origins of some of their stock. They could do a lot more – pretty much anything– to improve in this area.
One caveat to the «environmentally irresponsible» charge I am leveling here: they do have natural pest control, also known as putting local bugs in your garden to eat bugs you don’t want there. I saw ladybugs and praying mantis, but there may have been others elsewhere. I loved seeing this and want more bugs!
Other than that, turning out of their lot onto Randall is ridiculous, but that’s just Randall Road for you.
Overall, Platt Hill deserves its apparently-​huge customer base in some ways, but not in others. Hopefully next year they improve organization, signage, and awareness of native landscaping.
