Specialties

I focus on socratic learning in the form of face-​to-​face and online tutoring. My typical clients are families with children who have fallen behind in math and science and are seeking to boost their performance. I achieve results not by rehashing material but by direct observation and engagement with students doing work. A specialty of mine is working with highly gifted and motivated students who are being crushed by curriculum based education and being held back. These kids need a more interest directed learning and have the ability to move through material much more rapidly. For this I favor a problem based approach to learning rather that a curriculum. All work is tailored to the individuals interest and ability. For those with testing benchmarks I steer the problems to include the requisite skills.

History

Established in 2013.

I began tutoring in high school and have been repeatedly called on by friends to help with their children for decades. In graduate school I had a certain number of teaching responsibilities and found I far excelled my peers in this respect. Some of this was because many lacked solid English skills but much of it was because I connect well with students and sought out the real source of their confusion. Now I am growing this and seeking capital to extend this model of education more broadly.

I have a Ph.D. in theoretical and experimental physics with a number of publications. My previous professional life was growing up as a boatbuilder in Maine and then as a counsellor for 8 years on a crisis line helping people with AIDS/​HIV. My current interests are in electromagnetism and fluid dynamics and a few hardware projects built on this knowledge.
