James Carter Studio

This studio is ideal for budding metalsmiths and professionals alike. In my first class, Fabrication-​I, I was joined by two others, both of whom had experience making jewelry. I, however, had none. Despite my feeling intimidated due to a beginner’s insecurity about «maybe not belonging here,» I was encouraged appropriately and able to keep pace with the others. My final product, a bracelet, was nothing to write home about, but I’ll write about it here: it sucked, but it inspired me to continue on with another class, and so here I am in Fabrication-​II, and doing much better.
The studio itself contains every tool you could need, and then some; you will never be left wanting. While the space is relatively small, it lends itself well to a more intimate class environment where individual attention from your instructor, James, is the norm.
James has infinite knowledge and a craftsman’s weathered hands that speak to his years of experience at his honed trade. Just don’t tell him he has a tender artist’s heart that reflects the beauty of the world, transforming metal into meticulous miracles — he will curse you out. In a kind, tender way.
