High Desert Botanicals specializes in DIY cocktail bitters, tonic, cocktail mixers, and soda kits. We offer a wide range of kits from basic starter kits to our advanced level «Mad Scientist» kits. We package all of our ingredients separately so your inner mixologist can tinker with the flavor of each batch. Making bitters is easier than you thought and usually involves just three steps: steep, strain, and sweeten. All of our kits come with recipes and instructions, which are also available on our blog.

History

Established in 2013.

High Desert Botanicals is a small shop run by Janel Johnson and Reese Tietje of Carson City. We started making bitters kits in April 2013 when we first tried to make our own cocktail bitters at home. We didn’t have much luck finding milk thistle seed and burdock root in the supermarket and had to order them online in huge quantities. We knew we would never be able to use all of those ingredients before they became stale and realized that there might be other people out there who want to experiment with making their own bitters but don’t want to order a ton of weird herbs. We make these kits so other people can have fun with bitters without a huge investment.

Business Owner

I am a botanist specializing in rare plants of the Great Basin. When I’m not trekking around the desert and mountains, I like to grow edibles and native plants in my garden and play frisbee with my dog. I caught the crafting bug from my mom so I always have a project or three in the works.
