Dominguez Hills Golf Course

My dad built Dominguez Hills Golf Course back in 63 – 64. He was also the manager of the course after it opened. I have fond memories of golfing, playing in the arcade, and jumping on the trampolines. My dad would be sad to see it go. He eventually built, owned, and ran his own golf course up near Yosemite, until his death in 2010.

I almost wanted to cry when I drove by Dominguez and it was all boarded up and fenced off. The first time I came here was when i was about 12 years old in 1969 but not to play golf, to jump on their trampolines! Dominguez was perfect for my two young boys to learn and practice their short game, me too ! Never a wait to tee off. I will miss Dominguez Golf Course dearly for all the good memories.

Sad to learn that this place is now closed for good. It was my go-​to place to just hit some balls at the range. Wife and I used to practice here like at 6am on Saturday’s. I enjoyed their automatic tees because I didn’t have to lose most of my form since you didn’t have to bend, shift, and adjust, to get a ball. Shop worker was cool to talk to and the prices were fairly inexpensive. I still have credit on my driving range card too. Darn it!
The only thing that bothered me was the smell from the nearby trash/​recycling facility. lol

This was a super course, challenging, yet always welcoming, busy, yet always able to fit everyone in. It had a great practice range, and was always in reasonably good condition. Everything you could want for an inner city course… Except…
…the land owner wanted more money. So screw the local community, screw the moms and dads and kids and grandparents, and screw all the other everyday working people who called this course ‘home’.
The owner wanted more money. So a profitable, much loved, much used part of the community is now gone.
Welcome to America. The rich just want to get richer, and the 99% get screwed.

Have to get this review in before the place gets demolished. The go to par-​3 golf course for me and co-​workers. Easy, yet challenging. Range is nice (automated ball delivery). Putting greens are alright, and the chipping green is good practice if there aren’t people spraying balls all over the place.

If you want to play better golf spend time at this five star center!
Yes, FIVE STARS because as golfers we must appreciate and support a facility that offers us a place to practice our game so completely. Don’t buy a more forgiving club, spend more time PRACTICING the game you say you love. Put away that GPS and use your wits. I took some brush-​up classes here about 5 or 6 years ago when I got back into the game. The classes were well taught and offered a great package of instruction and facility use.
The driving range is state-​of-​the-​art. You get to concentrate on your swing and ball placement rather than bending over and fumbling to switch rubber tees for the height you want. The underground tee repeatedly feeds up a ball at whatever height you set it for. There are many targets for you to concentrate on.
There is a separate area to practice your chipping. More golfers would do well spending time in this area since most courses don’t allow chipping onto their putting greens. It’s a great area to focus on chip and roll distance technique.
They have two putting greens that are nicely designed to challenge your skills. Here again, an area of your game that is usually neglected. I remember my instructor, Derek, telling me that a four foot putt counts just as much as a 250 foot drive but isn’t worked on nearly as much.
Finally, pitch and putt courses are frowned on by many golfers as a waste of time or a place for kids play. The reality is that they help you keep your most important short game sharp. This 18 hole course is great for that purpose.
All in all, this facility is a terrific place to spend time working on ALL aspects of your game. If you’ll forgive the pun… and that’s the long and short of it!

. I am only 2 and a half month into learning golf and, honestly, still struggle with simple and basic positions. But I am glad I picked this particular golf facility and chose to take lessons from the instructor Derick — .
He is such a good instructor. What make him good is not only he know what he is doing but also he knows how to teach. He tries hard to make me see and understand the right positions of swing. After 4 lesson sessions, I can definitely tell exactly what is wrong with someone’s swinging positions. Now, it turns out knowing and doing is two different things, though.
I am only a beginner and never been to other golf range. But Dominguez Hill Golf Course definitely has its ups and downs. Parking lot is quite small but I never really had any problems. There are a two-​story hitting range structure; and it has at least 20 machine on each floor. The hitting machines are quite old and don’t work properly time to time. Main office area sells few options of glove, shoes, balls, and food. They got 2 small area for putting practices and another area for wedge practice – but currently closed.
What I really like about this facility is that the people who use the mini golf field. Majority of their customer do not know how to play golf properly. They don’t have the proper swinging techniques and they don’t have right etiquette. They are there to hit few balls and hang out with their friends. So, there is absolutely no pressure going out to the field and have some real practice. The holes are around 100 – 120 yards; so, it’s good for beginners. Practicing in golf range and practicing in actual mini golf field are two completely different thing; and I prefer going out to the field. It’s fun and you can actually practice using different clubs and wedges aiming for a particular spot.
Unfortunately, they are closing down in March 2012. So make good use of their mini golf field while you can. And defiantly take lessons. Their group lessons fees are not expensive at all; and if you are gonna do it, do it right. I know I am gonna take more lessons and be out on the field every week.

SAY IT AIN’T SO!
I was heartbroken to hear that the Dominguez Hills Golf Course may be no more. The new Porsche Driving Center is schedule to replace the golf course in 2012. I’ve been going to this course since it was built and it was the practice range for my high school golf team back in 1999. The chip and putt course has always been fun especially with their twilight golf specials. This course will be missed.

Have you seen these automatic Golf Ball Range Machines. WOW! Now that was awesome. Who wants to keep bending over and putting a ball on a tee, not me. It’s like I’m in the future. Sure, this could be installed at other courses that I’m not aware of, but I’m not reviewing those courses, am I?
It’s about efficiency and fun. This has both of those. It’s a par 3 course, 18 holes, sound like fun. Now granted, each hole is straight, without much variation. That’s my Minus 1 star. But it’s still fun and great pitch and put practice. Heck, If I’m not hitting the green everytime as it is now, then I don’t need doglegs. Bring on the straight 120 yard holes and teach me oh wise Golf God! 9 Holes are pretty cheap and 18 are just a few dollars more, NICE!

2 STARS for the par 3, 18 hole golf course. The starter was cool and we tee’d off around 6:15pm. There was no need for reservations because the minute we checked in and paid, we were off. To keep costs low, you will tee off range style mats and not natural grass. There wasn’t really anyone else on the course with us which was great. The sun was barely out and dropping fast. With less people out there with us, I didn’t have to keep looking everywhere for those hacker’s golf balls zooming by our heads. The course itself was as random as it can get. Some areas were muddy and swamp-​like, while small areas were fairly decent and well maintained. Other parts were brown like post-​fire type vegetation while the roughs are deep enough that when it lands, the Earth will just gobble it up
When the sun was out, seeing wasn’t a challenge. The minute the sun went down and the lights on the field illuminated, things got a bit tricky. There are not adequate lights for night time play. Some areas were dark as hell. One hole, we tee’d off almost in complete darkness. If you’re a hack, you’re going to have issues locating your ball after you shanked it into the middle of no where. If you have those fluorescent yellow golf balls, they will come handy for night play. They sure helped me out.
Greens were also a hit or miss. Very few were freshly cut and green as can be. Some were suffering from decaying patches. Overall, the greens are very slow so add some power to that putt or your ball is going to run out of gas. The only real hazards were two bunkers and possibly hitting it out of the course when your hole is aligned next to the perimeter. Other than that, you should be fine.
Have you ever driven from LA to Vegas on the Pearblossom Highway 138 where it’s constantly up and down short hills? Well, there are a few holes here where the fairway is set up like so. You almost feel like you’re on a miniature golf course.
It is what it is. What do you expect? 5 Star accommodations at this prestigious country club called Dominguez Hills? I think not. Cheap green fees meaning cutting back on many things so don’t expect much. Just look at as if you’re here to practice your short game.
4 STARS for the driving range. Why? Lots of stalls and two decks. Automated ball machines will make any lazy golfer smile. Machines do all the work, load the golf balls, tell you how much you’ve hit so far, how much is left, and you can even quit in the middle of your balance and won’t lose out on anything left on your range card meaning you can come back another time. Even though the range field itself doesn’t look like much, it’s very wide so you have plenty of room to work with. When we were there, it was pretty packed but I can see why. Also, I did see some practice greens for putting and a few chipping areas which is always nice to have available.
I do see myself practicing here but I don’t think I will return to play the course.
Simple math: (2 Stars + 4 Stars) /​divided by 2 = 3 STARS average.

This review is completely for their driving range.
I like to come here mainly for one reason: Automatic ball machines at each station (now just waiting for the day that the clubs are already there too lol)! Meaning for a lazy person like me, I do not have to carry my own bucket of balls and I can control exactly how many balls I hit (although with many of the machines the display is broken). Other than that, this place is going to be your usual run-​of-​the-​mill driving range — ample parking, open semi-​late, well-​lighted, driving range is about 300+ yards long and each ball runs 10 cents per ball. It also doesn’t hurt that there is a Unilocal check-​in deal that gives you $ 2 off a $ 6 card and is located right off the 405 and 110 freeways.

I must say I am one of those many regulars here since my family is golf-​a-​holic. For those who live in Torrance area like myself, the closest driving range and a short course is Dominguez and Harbor but gotta give the edge to Dominguez as the chipping and putting green seems more organized compared to Harbor.
Sometimes some of the automatic ball-​providing golf mats tends to malfunction but hey, what place is perfect right?

PRACTICE FACILITY REVIEW
Dominguez Hills GC is somewhere in the middle of my drive home to and from work from home. You can spot the GC off the 405S in Carson across from the Good Year blimp facilities.
I like their practice facilities. The few times i’ve been out there, there weren’t tons of people practicing. That’s perfect! The practice greens are nice and fast. There’s a chipping area. And the driving range (even though the machines are old) look something you’d find out in Asia or something. You have the automatic ball dispenser using the automatic range card. The machine also tells you how many balls you’ve hit and how much $ or balls are left. Pretty cool. The balls are pretty new too. Plenty of parking, might be kind of hard to get to since it is hidden.
If you’re in the neighborhood, check it out. Love the NO CROWDS. The clubhouse and course itself looks a bit too old and small for me.

Very nice service. But there is terrible smell from Torrance garbage dump place near by the golf course.
It’s a environment air pollution! But I am still going to practice golf.
I like to practice on the second floor because it’s nicer view.
The balls pop up through their machine but sometimes stuck in the hole and suddenly pop up. So don’t ever peek into the hole!!! And ball quality is not that good.
But like I said I like practice at the Dominguez Hills Golf Course.

Took 2 hours to play 9 short par 3’s. If time is money or you suffer from ADHD, avoid this place. If it takes you 3 strokes to reach a 100 yard hole, then this is perfect.
Pros: CHEAP, good range, close to the freeway, can play Night golf.
18 holes for $ 10 in the evening.

Hooray for the driving range for lazies. The tees pop up automatically and you can adjust the height pretty easily. Despite being two tiered and massive, it can sometimes be difficult to find a stall especially after work.
The course itself is another 18-​hole pitch and putt. There is a small range of distances so you could potentially choose a couple of different irons, but I hate hitting off of mats.
Oh, and it’s right across the street from some sort of garbage processing facility, so the air smells pretty «sour» I guess.
All in all, a pretty good place to work out your short game and just have some fun without any pretense.

First, lets start off wtih the range the best thing for those lazy people the tees pop up atomatic.
Second, another golf course to work on short game but tough because a lot of hills and no trees so its open and hot with no shade.
The greens are not the greatest put for the prize its worth it.

4-​Stars for the range! Always enough available spaces, do not have to worry about getting rained on, and the automatic machines. Their range is a must try!
3-​Stars for the golf course. No big deal, a good place to hone your short game. I love this place because it’s open so late. Can walk in around 7:30pm and still get in eighteen! Bad thing about a place like this. The conditions will only be as good on how the the golfers repair their divots and ball marks. And this place has a lot of them. But it’s still a good place.

haven’t played a game of golf here. but only gone to driving range. I like this range b/​c the balls pop up automatically from a ball dispenser so u dont have to bend over or move ur ball around (unless of course u want to take it off the tee.)
tuesday nights are best b/​c u get unlimited balls for just $ 15.00 or $ 10.00 for members. Range is open late (till 11pm).

One of the places where I learned to play the game at. Dominguez Hills is built right next to a landfill and you may… no, you will catch the scent of rubbish. It’s not that bad… it’s like pine scented b.o., but anyways, this place’s one outstanding feature is its golf range.
A two tiered, automated range with over 130 stalls, DH golf range was one voted as one of the best in the USA. I don’t get that because there are no natural grass tees. Speaking of which there is a 18 hole, Par 54, pitch and putt golf course there with synthetic tee boxes. It’s fun if you’re a beginner or a junior or senior golfer. I wish to God they tear down the pitch and putt and make a regulation size 9 hole course.
Back to the range, they have unlimited balls on Tuesday, but it gets crazy on those night… all Asian countries are represented there. My Asian brothers love their golf and they love their cigarettes. So on these busy nights expect the smell of smoke, Kimchi, Adobo and Curry in the air. All these smells actually some up half of my life.
Anyways, this place is for everyone. Especially the beginner golfer. It’s open in the mornings, really early. And when I’m there that early, it’s quite a serene place to be. Golf cards are handed out there and you place them in the machine. $ 6 for 75 balls, $ 10 for 125, $ 20 for 250. There are higher priced cards and I think all-​you-​can-​hit night is $ 20.
I do like coming back here, it’s been awhile though but when I want a little nostalgia and a little fun, I hit balls here. This place is easy to find, look for the Giant golf man on the south side of the 405, near the 110 in Carson.
