A co-worker suprised me with a oxtail dinner from here. He brought it to work for me so I have nothing to say about the service. The oxtails were falling off the bone delicious. Loved the cornbread muffins for sopping up the gravy and pot liquor from the greens. The only thing that made me minus a star was the potato salad. It did not taste house made. It had that over vinegary taste of market potato salad. Otherwise, I would eat from there again.

What soul food restaurant does not allow PAYING customers to order cornbread as a side? Unheard of. This place is going downhill. After moving to the area, a friend highly recommended R&R’s. I used to eat a here three-four times a month, but recently stopped. The food and service are progressively getting worse. Before my sister and I became vegetarians, we always ordered their fried chicken wings. On two separate occasions, we had wings with MULTIPLE pieces of hair on them… I’ve sent my macaroni and cheese back for being too cold once too many. My cornbread was burnt crisp on my last two visits. The red beans and rice are: red beans over rice, no seasoning. This isn’t the Westside, I know, my expectations for service are low — but even this falls below expectations. Service is terrible. All employees emit an «I much rather be somewhere else attitude!» which is very off-putting, uncomfortable, and unprofessional. I’m a generous tipper and I did not tip on my last visit. Not even 10% — which is ~generally~ my standard for crappy service.

I tried to like this place because it was close to my house but no cigar. I had breakfast here one morning. I decided on the pork chops the food was good. Plenty of it, came in a timely manner. But the waitress rushed you through the whole experience. When I sat down she served me water and asked did I want lemonade. I told her yes. Recieved my food no lemonade. Asked for lemonade again no lemonade. I observed some people she knew sat at her station and they got lemonade right away. End of my meal I address to her that I never got lemonade. Her reply well it’s not on your check so you did’nt pay for it. I paid with debt card and she asked was I going to leave a tip I did’nt want to but servers live on their tips so I did. She needs to learn more about customer service. Will not be coming back.

This is some craziness. I ordered chitterlings and dressing and Mac n cheese. First of all, my chitterlings had hair and wood so imagine how nasty it felt in my mouth. The crap was intertwined and I didn’t know until I started chewing and spit it out!!! WTF!!! SOOBVIOUSLY they just cook but don’t clean. My sister found foreign stuff in her food today and the Mac and cheese tastes processed. I am NEVER going back and the Latina girl that answered the phone just now 5:23PM1/1/16…has a horrible attitude. She probably cooked this food since it matches her nasty attitude.

So, today is 12−30−15 at approximately 4:15PM. I returned to this restaurant after three years due to finding a black water bug in my greens. I figured they’d have things a little better this time. I went up to the front counter and ordered a large chitterlings. The little short Mexican lady behind the counter told me with a nasty attitude, «we’re not serving chitterlings in containers this year!» So I was like wtf! «Well you usually do. What’s the problem?» She then said with a sharp tone, «This is from management and we’re not doing it! You can order chitterlings only with a lunch or dinner, sorry.» So I ordered a chitterlings dinner with greens, mac N’ cheese and yams. After I placed my order, I asked the short Mexican lady if she could put my chitterlings in a separate container because I didn’t want the juice to spill all over the fu@kin place in my car as they have done in the past. She said, «I could tell them not to put any juice in the box but we’re not doing containers.» Now you know telling a possible illegal no «speaka» English Mexican one thing and you’ll wind up with something totally different than what you asked for. She said, «no we can’t even do that!» «Why not?» «We just can’t do it. We’re not doing it this year!» Now I’m really like WTF!!! So I asked her if I could have a container on the side and she said no. I’m not sure what the heck is going on here but DONALDTRUMP I need you quick and in a hurry! I told her to keep her containers and her chitterlings! Ha!

Came here expecting some good old soul food Mac and cheese instead got some cheap mac & cheese that taste like Walmart. And not to mention paid $ 8 for it. Come on now I’m so let down. Still haven’t found some good macaroni. Idk why my mac&cheese looks so different from everyone else’s on Unilocal, the Mac and cheese everyone else got on here looks so good, but yet I happen to have this sh*t luck.

I think we can all agree how difficult and sparse«Southern Food» and«Soul Food» is to find in Southern California. I am very happy that I found this place. I placed my order over the phone to pick up during my lunch break. Its a little hard to spot in the shopping center(it shares the same space as a donut shop and the entrance faces the main street). I ordered the meat loaf lunch special which came with cornbread, a choice of two sides, and iced tea. All for under 10 bucks! Definitely want to spread the word about this place if you’re looking for delicious warm comfort food at an excellent price.

Y’all, let me tell you that these turkey chops will bless your soul! What is a turkey chop? Yeah, I didn’t know either until I ordered it and this will gladly be my restaurant of choice anytime I’m in Los Angeles. I am always very weary about going to soul food restaurants. As a matter of fact, I tend to shy away from them because I am always disappointed in food that I can cook better myself. Most soul food restaurants these days are severely overpriced, have horrible food and are missing the biggest ingredient which is love. Anyhow, we were visiting from Sacramento and decided to go to The family fishmarket that my brother loves. I have never been a fan of that place, but I decided to be a good sport and order something. Their sides were whack, so Unilocal pointed me in the direction of the soul food restaurant in the same parking lot. Once I tasted the food, I was so glad that we came here. As a matter of fact, the shrimp and fish that I bought from the other place, I gave it to the lady at the table in front of us for her dinner that night. So, back to the food. A turkey chop is the turkey breast deep-fried like fried chicken. It was perfectly seasoned and fried and so tender, juicy and moist. My dinner came with three sides and I chose the greens, cabbage and corn. I’m used to greens having meat in them, but they were still very good. The greens were a little saltier, and the cabbage not as salty so I mix them together and it was so good! The corn was out of this world! Sweet and buttery just like grandma used to make it. The banana pudding was OK, I probably wouldn’t order it again but it was decent for those who like it. The customer service was a little different. There were two Hispanic girls working behind the counter, and the one who took my order was very rushed, didn’t smile, and didn’t really provide great customer service. They weren’t rude, but would they work great either. I am assuming that they handle the takeout orders. Because immediately when we changed our to go order to sit down, a very sweet lady by the name of the Shana Took over for us and I felt like I was eating and my family’s kitchen. She made us feel so very comfortable and at home. She was very kind, sweet and I knew I was in good hands with her. There was also another lady who had braids going back and she was very nice also. You could tell these two were very warm, sincere and love their job. Not so much for the Hispanic chicks as customer service is not the first thing on their agenda.

I went to to this place after drooling over my parents plates one Sunday and have been coming here every Sunday since then. The food is so good here. I got the short rib dinner which comes 3 sides and 2 cornbread muffins. My sides were macaroni and cheese, cornbread stuffing topped with gravy and white rice also topped with gravy. Everything was perfect. The meat was fall off the bone tender and the mac n cheese melts in your mouth. OH! Forgot to mention that their desserts are the bomb too. I’ve had both the Banana Pudding and Peach Cobbler. Both are a must try IF you have room in your gut lol. I HIGHLY recommend this place. The staff is friendly and patient. If you want food on the weekend especially Sunday I suggest calling your order in because it gets very very busy. Their food is that good.

Just dropped in here for a late lunch and LOVED my meal. Sometimes I’m in the mood to drive to the other side of town so that I don’t run into anyone I know on my lunch break. Usually this is because I’m expecting myself to do some horrendously ravenous animalistic eating. Which usually occurs on stressful days ANYWAYS Today was one of those days. Loved the relaxed vibe of this restaurant and the ability to pig out in peace. Walked in after 2pm and missed the lunch hour special prices, which I didn’t mind. The hostess/server was super friendly and sweet and accommodating. She brought out 3 piping hot fresh corn breads before I even ordered anything. I ordered the catfish with 3 sides. I love that the meals here come with 3 sides instead of 2. I’m always more interested in the sides than the main dish… Got collard greens, yams, and mac and cheese. Mac and cheese was so-so, kind of soggy. Collard greens were fantastic in their consistency and flavor; I always love stewed veggies. Now the YAMS here are something else… I usually avoid ordering yams as a side dish because I feel like they always come out too soft and starchy and never sweet enough. Like, why order something at a restaurant that you could make out of a box yourself at home? Anyways, after seeing all these Unilocal reviews about the yams here, I had to try it. Sure enough, they were unlike any yams I’ve ever had. They sure are sweet enough but, better yet, they come in solid chunks that peel off organically with the tug of a fork. Not mushy at all. Catfish was also fantastic. I got them in strips and I think they are more enjoyable this way. The batter that they were fried in was crispy, hot, peppery, salty, crunchy good. The fish itself was tender enough that it was easy to break apart just with a fork and no knife. The server gave me some tartar sauce with it, but it’s tasty enough on its own without the sauce. Better yet, the portions are HUGE. I couldn’t finish my lunch – I ate maybe half of it. I’m taking the rest home and I can’t wait for round 2.

At first glance, this place looks simple. But on the weekends, it looks near impossible to enter… so so busy! In the past, I’ve tried the octails and fried chicken. Both AMAZING! Today I ordered the BBQ chicken. The best IVe ever tastef and eaten! The chicken is «fall-off-the-bone» tender. The sauce is tangy, not too sweet, and just the right spices. Wish I had asked for more! I always order the collard greens and cornbread dressing. I tried the buttered corn and its yummy. The food always comes with a generous portion. But because the food is so delicious that I can eat it all! I suggest ordering ahead. Staff is always friendly and very welcoming. The restaurant is clean and the food is mouth-watering!

I want to start this review off by saying the food is actually pretty good compared to some of the other soul food places such as Roscoes. It is located directly across from the stub hub stadium and has a great soul food/grandmas cooking atmosphere. My only complaint would be that the employees lack good customer service skills. Simple manners such as «thank you» & «you’re welcome» can propel their service to the next level. I got the baked chicken lunch special to go and it came with 2 sides and 2 mini cornbread muffins. For the sides I got Mac and cheese which was ok and a side of yams which were pretty good. As for the baked chicken, the white meat was falling off the bone which was also smothered in gravy and delicious. The cornbread muffins were a little dry and hard so it was disappointing but overall it was a pretty solid meal for under $ 10. Now for the customer service… Basically they just need to put a little effort into it. It’s not hard to acknowledge your customers with simple greetings. C’mon my peoples. It’s almost 2016 and we really need to get our manners together. I’m mixed with different races but predominantly black and they almost made me feel like I didn’t belong there. After I initiated each greeting I awaited a response and received nothing in return. Dang. Maybe I’m just spoiled and used to the way normal places greet you. All in all I was extremely disappointed in it and hope they make that minor adjustment so they can get a flock of all kinds of races of people who’d love to try their soul food and don’t have to worry about manners.

I’m spending this weekend in my hometown of L.A. to visit friends and family. I flew in on Friday and had plans to meet a cousin of mine in the Hawthorne area. I decided to grab something to eat, but a lot has changed. I jumped onto Unilocal and read the reviews. Finding this place was such a blessing. I arrived, and as the reviews say, the lady behind the counter was very friendly. I ordered and then took a seat at a table. BTW, if you’re going to eat there, just go in and take a seat at an empty table; they’ll come to take your order, bring your food to you, and when you’re done you pay at the register. I ordered their oxtail meal. Their meals come with 3 sides. I ordered collard greens, green beans, and black eyed peas. The meal also comes with corn bread muffins. Imagine my sheer joy when I bit into a muffin, and it wasn’t an extremely sweet corn bread muffin. They were more savory than sweet! That just brought me home because my mom made savory corn bread for our meals. I ate the collards the way I did when I was growing up: break cornbread into the greens and go to town. The green beans and black eyed peas were so very tasty and nicely seasoned. There was so much food that I knew I was going to take some to go. My meal was so great! I wasn’t 100% sure I’d make it back before flying back home, so I bought another meal to go. It was just as delicious. I’m totally addicted now. I was nearby this evening and got another couple of meals to go. I leave on Tuesday, so I’ll have enough R & R to last me until I head back to Oakland. It was really great having soul food that’s so close to the way my mom used to make it. Of course, in any major city with a significant population of black folks you’re going to have soul food restaurants, but this is the first one in a long time that reminded me of my mom’s cooking. I love this place and am sad it’s not closer to me. I’ll definitely make this a stop the next time I’m back to visit! Also, Unilocal says they take credit cards. They don’t. They do take debit cards.

I rarely if at all have I EVA given a place that has«Soul Food», «Southern Food», «Down Home cookin» 5 starts! Why you might be asking is because I usually don’t like it and the food is bland and tasteless or it is so FRICKIN spicy and STILLNOT flavorful I wouldn’t eat it even if there was a gun held to my head. So bad I’d rather die than eat it. Sound extreme but you do what you have to do for GOODFOOD! I came here with a coworker for lunch. I was asking her what she felt like or lunch and she said R&R. Of course I asked what in the world was R&R and she said R&R Soul Food in Carson on Avalon. WHAT! Are you FRICKIN kidding me? Not NO… H*LLNO! The girl had me begging to go to McDonald’s. And I HATE McD. I thought for sure everything was fried and would be a cardiac arrest waiting to happen. I told her I only eat like that 3 times a year. Easter, Christmas and Turkey Day. My poor waistline couldn’t nor could my arteries take it year around. But she insisted and I when to Unilocal for HELP! Please let the GREAT Unilocal’er have posted some pics of the food and menu for me to check out! GLORYBE… they had more than fried animal, heavy azz mac and cheese, potato salad and yams and chit-lins! I needed to be able to go back to work and CONTINUE to work and NOT slip into a food comma and nap under my desk for the remainder of the day. They tend to frown on that where I work. So we loaded up in the car and headed out! I wasn’t impressed when I walked in and to be honest I had a bit of a tude. I was anticipating a bad food experience. I went with the baked chicken, white rice and gravy and collards. That’s greens in case you’re new. The chicken ended up being smothered in a brown gravy which was not a big deal and it came with 3 mini little corn bread muffins and butter. My co-eater got some rice and gravy and some peach cobbler that she was going to save for later and get some cream to go with. The food came out and drum roll please… rrrrrrrrrrrr…ITWASBOMB-A-LICIOUS! The GREENS tasted like my momma was back in da kitchen! I’m drooling just remembering the SAVORYYUMMYGOODNESS! The chicken was moist and NOT because it was smothered in gravy. The MEAT was moist and cooked to PREFECTION! The GRAVY was the BOMB-DIG-GADEE and flavorful and I could have TOTALLY had JUST a bowl of gravy all by itself. It SERIOUSLY should be its own food group! The rice wasn’t crunchy but LIGHT and FLUFFY and swam in a little pond of gravy! OMG! ZZZZZ-BEST restaurant SOULFOOD I have EVA had! I’m telling you my grandmother would definitely have a challenge on her hands! SOFRICKENDELISH! The corn bread could have used a bit more oil in the batter but who cares about corn bread when you have REALFOOD! My co-eater sucked down the rice and gravy and when she went to take a little nibble of her peach cobbler and she DEVOUREDIT! So much for the ice cream she was planning to get to go with it. She was trying to scrape the inside of the container and she had that look people get when some was so good and now it gone! The service was on point. SUPERDUPERFIRNEDLY! I WILLFO-SHO be back! Simply SUPERB! This place gets busy so come early or call ahead for pick up.

This food is so good! The macaroni is on point, sweet potato pie, and catfish filet is amazing! This little hidden gem next to a donut shop is like finding buried treasure! They make everything to order so prepare to wait about 20 minutes unless you call your order in. The inside is nothing impressive but don’t let that fool you, this place can throw down with the food! Sunday’s is a really crowded day but when you eat you will know why. I’m just disappointed that it took me a year of living in Carson to find this place.

R & R Soul Food is AWESOME! I was meeting some friends for an early dinner before a game at the Stubhub! Center, and actually found R & R here on Unilocal.Had been to games there before a million time but never actually noticed the nondescript building in the strip mall across Avalon. Well, I will be sure not to miss it again! First of all, we were meeting at 4, so I thought: the place will be empty. I was SOWRONG. It was full with non-stop traffic — folks waiting for tables and folks picking up to go orders. And the constant stream did not slow the entire time we were there. The place is small. And popular. Which means an inevitable wait — it’s not the sort of place that takes reservations :). But, we put out names on the list and they had plenty of chairs lined up along the outside of the restaurant and inside along the front window, to make for a comfortable wait. Everyone in the place was nice. Took us almost a half hour to get a table. They were a little slow clearing tables — 2 or 3 opened up about the same time and we were definitely waiting anxiously to hear our names called! Our server was super nice and on top of everything. When the four of us thought we might just order two entrees to share, we asked her if that would be enough. She didn’t feed us any BS to encourage us to order four entrees, she was honest and told us it was LOT of food. We had seen most folks in there ordering the fried chicken so we went with that for both entrees… one with all white meat, one with all dark. It was a great choice! And a TON of food. Each entrée comes with THREE sides and a corn muffin. However, when the four of us ordered two entrees, our server brought us a platter full of warm, delicious corn muffins. Very generous. Our entrée came with collards, yams and mac n cheese — all were super authentic and super tasty. The collards were not overly salty and there was a huge portion. The yams were sweet and comforting. The other entrée was ordered with cornbread dressing, collards and mac n cheese. I tasted their cornbread dressing and it had a little kick to it. Yum! Everything was great. Just as you’d expect it to taste. And, it’s a great deal, especially when you can split the cost of an entrée with a dining companion. Their specialties to drink are sweet tea, Arnold Palmers, and lemonade. All are very sweet. Personally, I think they go with the meals perfectly. As one of my friends said, «this is definitely a place I want to come back to!»

I’ve been coming here for quite some time. I haven’t been here in about 6 months till today. Maybe the cook called in sick today because the food wasn’t as favorable as it normally is. Also the portions were smaller than usual. Normally I would have leftovers but not today. I put in three orders and I got cheated on the veggie order. For my sides I asked for cabbage, greens & mac n cheese. They put one cabbage leaf at the bottom and greens on top :-( Hopefully next time I order from them the regularly scheduled chef will be there

Just let your sooooul glow with some amazing eats at R&R’s. Upon entry we were greeted by a very friendly server who said«welcome home y’all make yourself comfortable.» I love that kind of hospitality when eating at a restaurant. We were there for lunch, so we ordered from the lunch menu which has plenty of options to choose from. From catfish, spare ribs, and fried chicken(to name a few) I really didn’t see where we could go wrong. The sides offered were also great selections such as yams, collard greens and black eyed peas amongst others. Each meal also comes with free AYCE corn bread! I ordered the fried catfish which was a nice sized portion considering it was from the lunch menu. Nice a crunchy texture with soft and buttery catfish in the middle… mmm mmm good y’all! For my sides I had the yams and collard greens which reminded me of how my mom used to make them. The yams were nice, sweet and soft, and the greens had great texture and some bacon love in them. I can’t say enough positive things about the server there. She was absolutely amazing! Very friendly and outgoing, she really adds a vibe of «home cooked meal» in this place. Food= 5 star Service = 5 star Overall = 5 star Get your soul food on y’all! Cheers!

It’s so Soul GOOD! If you’re looking for authentic southern food, look no further. R & R Soul Food has the right stuff. They are located right across from the Stub Hub Center(formerly know as the Home Depot Center, it’s were the Galaxy soccer team plays). It’s on the small side with about 8 tables or so. Not surprisingly, the place was packed both times I’ve been here. They have a good amount of take out business, so there could be a few people waiting on the chairs by the door. I got my food to go both times. I would recommend calling your orders in to save some waiting time. On my first visit I got the Pork Chop w/Yams and Butter Corn. The pork chop was Delicious! You get two perfectly cooked pork chop that are super crispy outside and tender inside. Yum! For my two sides, I went with Yams, sweet & delicious and Butter Corn, also good. While I was waiting for my food, I noticed almost everyone in the restaurant had ordered the Fried Chciken. It must be good. So on my second visit, I got the Fried Chicken with Collard Greens and Mac N Cheese. The fried chicken was so good. But my lunch portion was only 2 pcs a leg & a thigh(for dark meat) some how I feel it should be 3 pcs for the price, just my opinion. For sides I got collard greens, Delicious and Mac N Cheese also good. You get two cornbread muffins with each order. It was a mixed bag for me. The first time I went, the cornbread was super dry. After a couple of bites, i was done. The second time I came, the muffin was super moist, yum yum yum! Ended up eating both of them. lol. Their menu offers an extensive array of southern food staples like Fried Catfish, Oxtails, Smothered Chicken and a lot more. They add other items on Friday & Saturday(look at the picture section for a pic of their menu) Price for the most part is under $ 10 for lunch with some special items costing up to $ 15. If you’re looking for a good southern meal, look no further than R & R. Try it for yourself and decide.
