Kipos Greek Taverna is located in the heart of Chapel Hill on Franklin Street. Known for it’s robust and rustic Greek flavors, the Kipos kitchen offers traditional preparations of rotisserie meats, fresh vegetables from the garden, and wild-caught fish! Dining at Kipos is more than an adventure for the palate, with a live bouzouki player and belly dancer on the weekends Kipos is a true celebration of Greek cuisine and culture.
History
Established in 2013.
Kipos is a reflection of owner Giorgios Bakatsias childhood: fresh & robust village foods cooked in wood-burning ovens, honoring old & modern recipes alike. It’s a remembrance of his mother’s masterful way with phyllo. It’s a celebration of cheese, breads, moussaka and lamb youvetsi. It’s a story about octopus grilled over a fire and the perfect dolmades. It’s about his love for her youvarelakia, rabbit stifado & the aroma of lamb roasting over an open fire. Kipos is a tale of baked eggplant, a perfect village salad, kakavia soup & zucchini blossoms & fresh cheese. And of course we can’t forget the baklava, honey walnut cakes & spoon sweets. But above all, Kipos is a story about the love and joy that Giorgios’ parents, Panagiota & Nikos shared. Working the fields heroically, so that one day he & his siblings Yianni, Terry, & Olga could realize the American dream. This is what we want to share with you at Kipos: cooking from the memory of the heart. Kalos Orisate (welcome) to our home!

Giorgios Bakatsias, the Southeast’s most prolific & visionary restaurateur, boasts over 30 yrs of experience in the culinary industry. He has been the creative force behind countless dining restaurants, food venues, & gourmet markets. From conception to opening, Bakatsias directs all aspects of the creative process, including concept development and branding, architectural and interior design, selection of key management, lighting, textiles, and furniture. His appreciation for the guest experience, intuitive sense of cutting-edge trends in dining, and talent for menu composition have garnered the attention and praise of local and national food critics alike. Giorgios learned to cook at the foot of his mother’s stove in the quiet village of Karista, Greece. Giorgios Bakatsias is known not only as one of NC’s top restaurateurs &restaurant design consultants, but also as a source of boundless energy, an unmistakable laugh, & eternal optimism.
