NC License Plate Bureau

I’ll agree with everything that Matt K. has already said about this location. I’ll just add that getting your license plate as an out-​of-​stater can be a hassle here unless they’ve changed their standard operating procedure since March 2009. Here’s why…
***WARNING*** The rest of this «review» is more of a critique/​rant on the NC DMV system in place when we moved out here in early 2009. I haven’t been back since to see if they’ve changed, but will leave it to my own experience as a guide for out-​of-​state peeps.
Look. I’ve been around the block — moved from TX to WA to NV before moving to NC. In the past, I’d just go to one place (DMV), have them transfer my license/​registration info from the previous state, show them my insurance, yadda yadda yadda. It’s all on their website and standard stuff.
Moving out here in ’09 and transferring my registration/​license plate from NV to NC wasn’t a simple process at all as in previous states. (i.e., TX to WA, was a breeze, as well as WA to NV) Here, it was literally like pulling teeth. In the end, I had to request the info directly from the state of NV with several phone calls, a letter and my own stamp b/​c NC’s DMV couldn’t do it. Seriously? WTF? The last several states I lived in just looked it up in their systems and made the requests themselves. Done.
Not here. No where on their website did it say that I had to do this before hand (I looked it up back then, but maybe it’s changed). My biggest complaint is how difficult they make this compared to other states with more updated and integrated systems in place. For that, and a lack of overall efficiency through the whole process — i.e., standing in the line for 30 minutes to be told that I had to request all of my NV info sent directly to the NC DMV was what really knocks them down in my books. Most other state’s DMV centers are more organized, having you take a number, waiting to talk to a rep who is infinitely more knowledgable than some of the ppl here.
All I have to say is that I pity any out-​of-​state newcomers who have to go through this painful and misguided experience. I’m glad I survived it back then and hope to God or whatever being you pray to that I’ll never have to go through it EVER again. Once was enough.

FWIW, they do have free wifi here courtesy of U-​mall. ;-)

Not the kind of place you’d like to hang out, but this is an easily accessible location. It opens at 9 am, but there was already a crowd of 10 folks in front of me. The ladies were very helpful and not condescending like you get from some DMV workers. Everyone moved through the line swiftly.
Arrive early to beat the line if you can, but even better is later morning before lunch time. I had some mix ups and had to come back later. There were just two other folks ahead of me then.
