Description

Specialties

Located on historic Broad Street’s Gallery Row, the Edward Dare Gallery features an extensive variety of fine art including landscape, figurative, architectural & still life paintings plus exquisite bronze sculpture, pottery, jewelry, unique works in wood, glass & metal –all by some of the most sought after artists in the low country, plus accomplished artists from across the nation.

This downtown location complements the artwork available at sister gallery, Sandpiper Gallery off the coast of Charleston on Sullivan’s Island. These galleries offer the best of both worlds — browsing beautiful fine art in a casually elegant seaside gallery or in the charming atmosphere of Broad St. — steeped in rich history and legendary Charleston traditions. Whether you are in the market to make an acquisition of fine art or just browsing, visiting either gallery is sure to be an unforgettable experience.

History

Established in 2005.

Edward Dare Gallery opened its doors in 2005 as the downtown sister to Sandpiper Gallery on Sullivan’s Island which opened in 2001. Charleston has become a destination for art collectors across the US. The national reach of this Broad Street location, which has become known as «Gallery Row» due to the concentration of Fine Art Galleries was key in the decision to open a second location. A trip to take in Charleston’s art scene would not be complete without a stroll down Gallery Row on Historic Broad Street, a «must see» for any serious art collector. Gallery Row is home to a concentration of 12 galleries in a beautiful 2 block section of Broad Street offering the very finest in Art and Design. The galleries on Gallery Row are reminiscent of the city in both personality and architecture –as you stroll from one gallery to another you will enjoy the southern charm of colorful window boxes, enchanting courtyards, pristine architecture, and a dose of warm Southern hospitality.

Meet the Business Owner

Julie S.

Business Owner

Julie and Mark Sweat have an eye for unearthing gems. The husband and wife team’s talent manifests itself not only in their ability to spot artwork that is perfect for their clientele, but also in their knack for locating the perfect gallery space. Until February 2001, both Julie and Mark worked as engineers; however, they wanted to start their own business and after discussing different options they decided an art gallery was the right fit. Julie had grown up appreciating and creating art. Her mother dabbled in many different mediums and encouraged her children to experiment with art. This creative environment gave Julie eclectic taste and a discriminating eye. «Having tried so many art forms has given me a strong appreciation for those who truly have talent.»
