Johnson’s Moving & Storage

My experience with Johnson Moving & Storage was a nightmare. First, they came a day late as right on top of the estimate was the correct date. I have never listened to more excuses in my life. The estimate called for 3 men at $ 199.00 per hour for 8 hours work. When it became apparent that they could not move us out of our unit in 8 hours they sent 2 more men. The reason for the extra time was members of the moving team were talking on their cell phones and, in general, slacking off. By the time my furniture was moved into their storage area the final move out bill was $ 3000.00 over the estimate. When in storage for 4 months they tried to double bill me for one month until I showed them a copy of the check. When it was time for our move in, the crew was on time and the cost was close to the estimate. Our problem was a number of pieces of furniture (sofa leg, pedestal, 8 ft folding table, garden tools, broken glass vases, fishing poles snapped into several pieces, etc) was missing. To make matters worse we had pieces of furniture from someone who had their belongings next to ours in storage. Johnson refused to send insurance claim forms when asked and was told to go through our home owners insurance.
Need I say more? Please, please do not even think of hiring Johnson Moving & Storage for your move. It will cost you.

DO NOT USE!!! They understate prices and the agree to not charge for understated prices and then charge your card anyway. Workers were nice enough and respectful but owner or manager is a mean spirited untruthful, untrustworthy person.

I had Richard Johnson come out and give me a quote for my move. I called him a few weeks later, left a message for a call back because my move date had changed, they did not call me back. I called again today and left message saying I had to cancel my move.
Richard called me back and rudely commented, I went to allot of trouble to arrange your move so why are you canceling, in a confrontational tone, I told him I would have never even used him with that type of attitude, then went on to say that my move was changed because my closing date had move to another date, but he hung up on me instead before I could explain. I had planned to change the move date but not after his awful attitude, can’t imaging how an owner could ever treat a customer that way. Image what could happen after they have your stuff and you have a problem

Short story is that after the horrific situation below, I called the owner to tell him how uncomfortable we were with the whole situation and instead of hearing me out he kept asking me what I wanted otu of this phonecall, told me he wouldn’t charge us for the move and hung up on me. Then he IMMEDIATELY cashed our check – I didn’t even get a chance to get home to get the check number and put a stop payment on the check. We’re now in a legal battle, have set up fraud alerts with my bank and theirs, and are contacting the BBB. I’m just SO glad he doesn’t have my card number to continue charging us random fees. THE OWNER IS A CROOK! DO NOT MOVE WITH THIS COMPANY! Read their reviews on google, and know that it is skewed b/​c they offer a discount to some clients in exchange for a good review. Sort them to read them all! Save yourself the trouble!

Like most people reviewing them, I liked the moving guys and I thought they went pretty quickly and felt that they were really careful with our things. When i called to book the move I was told it would be $ 99/​hour, minimum of 3 hours. I spelled it out for him exactly what we had (minimal furniture, 1 bedroom apartment) and that we were on a 3^rd floor, moving to a 2^nd floor. I received a call at 8AM the day before my move day and they guys were trying to find my apartment – the owner had written down our information wrong – while on the phone I once again spelled out the # of floors and details of my move. The guys came back the next day. When they arrived, the guys told me there would also be a $ 99 «stairs» fee. I had 2 specific conversations with this company and never was that mentioned – costs of stairs usually reflect in the end price because hello, climbing stairs while moving already takes more time, which earns the company more money. So I called the owner who offered to waive it but had a poor, pissy attitude about how they «usually don’t hassle with apartments or move these smaller jobs» and reminded they don’t charge for mileage or the truck or gas – again aren’t all of those items eventually covered in my hourly fee? — the «we don’t do these smaller jobs anyway» was never mentioned to me before either when they gladly took my job.
After loading all our stuff and driving to the new place, I was told that it was actually $ 125/​hour, not $ 99 b/​c there was a 3^rd guy and the quote was for two guys plus packing fees and that we had to pay up now through the next rounded up hour before they would unload the truck… we were literally forced to pay hundreds more than originally told under duress while our stuff was held hostage on the truck, so we wrote a check.
You don’t send more men than you quoted for and you don’t wait until after a job to tell the customer there is a change in pricing! Plus the 3^rd guy only seemed to be around a third or so of the time. They arrived well after my husband and I arrived to our apartment with icees in hand… guess we paid for that by the hour as well. So I guess the owner made his money back in the extra $ 25 an hour he charged us for the four hours it took them to move our tiny 1 BR apartment of stuff from North Charleston to Goose Creek. After we gave each guy a small tip it costed us to move our 1BR apartment, with 1 bed, 1 dresser and 1 couch (all other stuff anyone could carry in-​hand) about $ 600. We used them b/​c we used them to move into this place FROM goose creek a year before for about $ 360 the year before. SAME stuff. Not sure what changed but we were totally ripped off. I’ve moved every year since 2002, even when I had twice as much furniture, and it never ever ever costed me this much. The guys are nice and work pretty hard, the owner sucks.

I have given every opportunity for Richard Johnson to make me an offer on the over $ 22,000 of lost or stolen and severely damaged personal household goods of mine. He has REFUSED to offer me anything as well as refused to even file the insurance claim.
As a disabled 60 year old JOHNSONS MOVING has seriously added to my illness both with the loss of MANY of my valuable belongings as well as to my mental state due to his lies and complete disregard of offering good service to a paying client in advance. My advice to any thinging of using Johnsons Moving that you would be risking seriously your personal belongings… STAY CLEAR AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY… Moving compaines have absolutely NO regulation by governments in fact there is a website if it still up BAD​MOVERS​.COM

Do NOT trust the owner Richard Johnson. Do not sign anything on paper, as he is extremely deceptive in how he writes moving quotes and lures you to sign with his «free storage» facility. Nightmare of a move with this company. Every time we asked him for paperwork, he altered the paperwork, never took inventory, and always said that the driver had paperwork. Too many other reputable moving companies in town that are honest. We just happen to get tricked. Please don’t trust these men with your posessions.

I am very pleased that I choose Johnson’s. I called 3 days before I needed to move and they had no problem fitting me in. The man on the phone was super helpful and made great suggestions for the type of move I’d need. The men who showed up on the moving day were on time and extremely nice and helpful. They blanketed and wrapped all of the furniture, disassembled my dining room table and bed and worked very efficiently. At the new house, they assembled everything and put all the furniture where I wanted it to go. The whole moving process was painless and I was so impressed that I doubled what I had originally planned to tip the movers.

Johnson’s Moving and Storage offered a Groupon deal that Richard Johnson flat out REFUSED to honor. He also refused to work with Groupon to resolve the issue. I paid for 2 hours of moving assistance with a truck ($ 99) and he then said that there is a 3 hour minimum. That extra hour was going to be an additional $ 125 at least. No where on the deal or on his website does it say that there is a minimum. One of the other options on the Groupon deal was 4 hours for $ 179. He wouldn’t honor that one either. Why even offer a 2 hour deal if there is a 3 hour minimum?! The man was full of excuses: «I don’t really do these coupons.» «That was for college students.» «That was in May and doesn’t really apply anymore.» «There are laws mandating a limit of 3 hours for moving.»
The Groupon doesn’t expire until December. It was even extended from it’s previous November expiration date! He sold over 100 of these deals and simply will not honor them. Needless to say, I am livid and now must pay double for a reputable mover.

Great moving company! The guys showed up early and got straight to work. Made moving a breeze– highly recommend them to anyone moving in the Charleston area. Really nice guys!
