Specialties
Our focus is installing aftermarket accessories for European Automobiles designed to upgrade the driving experience and improve on the durability of vehicles under intensified driving conditions. We want to make sure to offer and install the best products that coincide with dealer warranties protecting both the consumer and dealerships from unnecessary frustrations found with under-engineering and over marketed accessories. At GMP Performance, our installation philosophy is to respect the original manufacturer’s design and determine the opportunities for improvement. Upgrading a vehicle with aftermarket products must blend the design philosophies of automobile manufacturers and tuners.
History
Established in 1975.
GMP Performance was founded in Charlotte, NC and incorporated in 1975. Originally intended as a Porsche shop, GMP quickly gained a loyal water-cooled VW following after upgrading and successfully auto-crossing a «parts runner» VW Rabbit. Throughout the 70’s and early 80’s, the Rabbit continued to transform from an Auto-Crosser into a full-on SCCA racecar. A complete parts catalog soon followed offering VW enthusiasts a complete range of parts, many that were designed and built in-house, and others that were imported from the most desired VW tuners from Germany.
In the late 80’s, GMP Inc exited racing and founded Zender North America, importing and distributing complete aero kits for Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Porsche and of course, VW to dealers all over the US.
Since 2000, GMP Performance again offers local installations while continuing to import and distribute the industries most distinguished brands for European car tuning through a global network of enthusiasts and dealers.
Meet the Business Owner
Stephen K.
Business Owner
Stephen’s passion for cars developed from a young age having been taken along to all the races and autocrosses by his parents, Joe and Claudia. He started selling auto accessories during his summer vacations in middle and high school. With a graphic arts and marketing degree, Stephen initially helped GMP to produce a dealer catalog. The catalog turned into a website and after resurrecting the company’s 1983 VW Scirocco, began catering to local European car enthusiasts that remembered the GMP name from the 70’s. As the website grew with parts and accessories, along with local customer car galleries, the business began to grow again.
Today, Stephen handles the business development of GMP Performance, steering it in a direction focused on providing clients with the best products and support. As a racer and driving instructor, Stephen brings track experience and an overall passion for European vehicles to work each day.
