Description

Specialties

Family owned Since 1954, The Penguin has been serving up the best burgers, hot dogs, fried pickles, and shakes that Charlotte has to offer. Every menu item is made from fresh ingredients for each order. Our sauces and dressings are made fresh each day. The only thing that is frozen at The Penguin is our ice cream. Smoked BBQ and mac and cheese bites. Veggie burgers and super chopped salads. Penguin Vegans eat here! Local brews are on tap, and ice cold PBR’s are featured daily. Our full bar offers everything from the best bourbons to Mason Jar Cucumber Mojitos. Dinner for two or a large party of 102, we can put together whatever works for you. See you at The Penguin. Since 1954.

History

Established in 1954.

Charlotte native Jim Ballentine opened the doors of The Penguin Drive In in 1954. For decades Jim put out ice cold beer and burgers from 10:00am-3:00am, 7 days a week to everyone from the city slickers to the city workers. The Penguin has put out consistently good food through the years, whether in times of quiet or controversy. (The Penguin was never sold, and has always been owned by a Ballentine). In 2014 The Penguin celebrates 60 years in business. Currently owned and operated by Jim’s youngest daughter Lisa, The Penguin and Jim Ballentine’s legacy carries on. Happy 60th birthday to The Penguin.
