Alexander House

This place was a lovely surprise. Our two bed room was across the hall from the bathroom. Like being a guest in someone’s home who cared about your comfort. Easy walk to Downtown Mall. I highly recommend it.

I was only there for a night and of the night only about 2 hours of awake time.
Cheaper than any hotel rooms in town, more expensive than a more traditional hostel.
Bunkhouse was clean and well-​appointed. I had a full house and everyone was polite and courteous.
One bathroom and a kitchenette with some basics provided. Has wifi but I didn’t use.
Area is quiet and safe. A quick drive to downtown and university.
The host — Raven (I think that’s his name) — was very polite and professional.
If you’re cruising through town for a night then this will do.

Prices are out of control! If you call yourself a hostel, then prices should reflect it. The bunks and rooms are clean, but the price is exhorbent.

Through a series of strange and circumstantial events involving avoiding being snowed in at a ski resort in West Virginia over the holidays and waayyyy longer than we had planned, my boyfriend and I cut our trip short and sought shelter in sunnier (relatively) places.
To be able to call a hostel at 7 pm without reservations or anything and having the owner tell us we could definitely check in whenever we arrived in town that night was 5-​star worthy in and of itself.
Did we expect the homiest of homes complete with french press coffee, oatmeal, teas, several essentials in the fridge, a BEAUTIFUL dining room covered in plants and sunshine, a books and games shelf, WiFi, Dr. Bronners soap and a squeaky clean bathroom featuring a hair dryer too? No, of course not. You can’t have such high expectations for hostels otherwise you can’t stay in hostels.
Alexander House, however, is not your average hostel. The amenities described above are for the house but those staying in the hostel (bunks in the adjacent building behind the house– former garage?) have access to the house too.
No one was staying in the hostel the night we came into town so the owner (one of the owners, it’s a co-​op type deal), told us we could have the whole hostel bunk area to ourselves for 35 bucks or we could stay in one of the charming rooms named after local neighborhoods for $ 50. We chose the latter and had the whole house to ourselves.
Not only does Alexander House make for an incredibly relaxing and comfortable home base during your trip, but I wanted to transport that house on wheels to Louisville, KY. It’s just so peaceful and thoughtfully put together. Their plant setup even inspired me to go all out with some indoor plants in my apartment. A trip to Charlottesville in the future will not be complete anymore without a stay here.

I was asked to refrain from taking a shower the day I checked out … ’nuff said. Oh … the wi-​fi worked about a quarter of the time I was there. The explanation was that the router was new (aka BS).

I stayed during the week, and I was one of two people each night that I stayed. It was great! It was comfortable and cozy. I felt very safe, and I slept wonderfully. I liked the central location, too. I’m not sure I would have liked sharing the one bathroom with a full house but in my situation it worked very well. There was wi-​fi when I was there. They even had a iMac (kind of old) for public use, but I was able to use my own laptop.

This was a really great place to stay during the holidays — I had the house to myself! It’s $ 35 for a dorm bed in a shared room in a very comfy and pretty house. The neighborhood was nice, though a little bit farther away from the downtown mall than would have been ideal, since I was on foot. However, there were restaurants nearby and a little corner store, so it was no big deal. The manager was very friendly, and I highly recommend it. The only downside (other than location) was the lack of internet, there is a café down the street that has wifi (though it was closed when I visited).

Mostly terrific hostel with a friendly alt spirit. I really liked the people I met there, it’s a great neighborhood, and you can’t beat the price — $ 30 for a bed (dorm-​style share with one other person). The house itself was clean and cheerful, and the guy in charge picked me up from the airport ($ 25 extra) and gave me the lowdown on the city and nearby attractions. However, I was really bummed that there was no wifi and no proper breakfast, just toast (also, no alcohol allowed, oops). Still, it was a fun place to stay.
