Silver Thatch Inn

The 4 stars is due to the size of the room relative to price, however the breakfast was absolutely delicious! Blueberry pancakes that tasted nearly like donuts, and local VA sausage. This stay was a couple of years back so I don’t have too many details, but I still remember that breakfast.

We had a great stay at this warm and friendly historic inn. The innkeepers Terry and Jim make you feel welcome the moment you walk in. We enjoyed the Madison room, complete with a cozy fireplace and sitting area. The breakfasts are simply wonderful. Good location for wine touring, downtown shopping etc.

One of our favorite B&Bs. The owners are accommodating, proud of their historic place and their adopted city, and appoint the interior with lots of nice touches.

Delightful breakfast. Eggs benedict with toast, fresh fruit, and chocolate banana bread. Beds were nice and firm. Very sweet couple owns this b&b. Lots of character and charm. Stayed in the Taylor room because there were 4 of us. Room was a bit small for the price (~$ 275 for one night) because the inn charges $ 30 per extra person. The location is very close to UVA. Big plus to the inn for not requiring a minimum 2-​night stay. If you’re not adverse to spending a little more, the Silver Thatch Inn is a really great place to spend in Charlottesville.

Let me preface this by saying, this is a lovely inn with very nice innkeepers. I booked here as a one night getaway for my wife and I. We have two little ones and were looking to have a quiet night and a good night sleep (doesn’t happen often with a baby and toddler), while the kids stayed at their grandparents. We specifically booked a room with a fireplace, and were hoping for an early dinner and a romantic night by the fire. They serve you a complimentary glass of wine at their quaint bar (Iggy’s), which is a nice touch and how we started our night. We went out for dinner in Charlottesville and then retuned back at the inn. It was a very small room, which is fine, but the bed was extremely high (there was a stepstool to get up to the bed) and there was really no other seating area. We lit the fire, but because of the height of the bed you couldn’t see the fire at all while lying in bed. So kind of defeated the purpose of having it. The worst part was the heating system they have installed in the rooms. It went off on on depending on the temperature (which is normal), but the sound when it was on was very loud and kept me up all night. Not to mention when it was on it was sweltering in the room, and then when it was off it was freezing. To boot the bed comforter was like a handkerchief, provided no warmth or comfort, and we fought over it all night because it was so small. Needless to say, neither of us had a good nights sleep. We are more tired than when we left! If sleep is NOT a priority for you, then this would be an ok place to stay, just dont pay the extra for a fireplace. The menu for dinner at the restaurant looked good.

By far my favorite place to eat a special meal in Charlottesville… absolutely no question about it. Not because of the great food but because of the great overall dining experience. I can’t recommend it enough!!!

To start i never give 5 stars on one visit it takes at least 2 and since I don’t live here it is doubtful I will return here but not because of the food or service it is distance. This is a great special occasion restaurant pricey and elegant limited menu but high on fancy have not stayed at the inn. nice for a quiet evening of slow dining with good food and drink. 6 apps available and 6 entrees on the night we went cozy fireplace. Food was cooked as ordered bread was fresh and service was attentive but not overbearing. 4 people 3 had 2 drinks each coffe no desert aprox $ 50.00 a person including tip.

I’d stayed here with my husband and parents a few years ago, and we all really enjoyed it. Was just there last week and it was even better than before. Stayed in the John Tyler and George Washington rooms, on the ground floor of the cottage — beautifully furnished and super comfortable. The breakfasts were scrumptious — they bake the breads and desserts right there. And dinner was off the hook!
I can’t say enough about all the little extra touches, and how accommodating the owners and staff are. We got some wonderful leads on shops and things to do and see, and just had the best time whever we had a chance to chat.
One caution though: book ahead! Especially in the fall, they seem to stay pretty busy. Definitely worth a little extra planning though.

My wife and I have enjoyed three stays at the Silver Thatch. All three visits have been in August. One of the reasons my wife and I have warmed to staying at B&Bs is getting to know the innkeepers. Jim and Terri are superb hosts and we look forward to chatting with them during our stay. In fact, on our most recent visit this August we stayed because we were passing by Charlottesville after dropping off our daughter at college in Alabama. Instead of our «usual» room, the Madison, we stayed in the Tyler this time since my wife was nursing an injured knee and didn’t want to deal with steps. It was a lovely room. The one distraction was a musty smell coming from the fireplace. Also, being separate from the main house, the wi-​fi signal was on the weak side. Not all of my tech gadgets were able to pick up the signal. As others have mentioned, the food at both breakfast and the Inn’s dining room are to die for. If you skip breakfast you are cheating yourself! Terri’s breakfasts are exquisite. During each stay we’ve enjoyed dinner at the Inn’s restaurant. The food is top-​notch and the wine list will leave your head spinning. The Inn has been on Wine Spectator’s Award of Excellence list for many years running. Terri makes all of the desserts — she has a cooking degree and knows what she’s doing! The rooms — oh yeah — are very clean and comfortable. The house dates to 1780 so there are a few creaks and squeaks on the stairs and floors, which adds to the quaintness.

The dinner/​room packages are worth every cent. Staff is very accommodating.

My bf and I stayed here in August for a quick and easy getaway from DC. I had never stayed in a B & B before and the Silver Thatch Inn was recommended to me by a good friend therefore I had high expectations when we drove up to it. It was idyllic! We arrived on a Friday around 6 pm and were greeted promptly. Our room, the «John Tyler Room», was not connected to the main house, but on the ground floor (which was perfect because we had brought our bikes).
We had a comfy canopy bed that was a bit high off the ground (apparently they had purchased deep mattresses with pillow tops) so I would be hesitant about this room for elderly guests, the softest bed sheets ever, a clean bathroom with robes, a 13″ mounted flat screen mounted in the corner, a well-​working air conditioner, a fireplace, cookies on the bed, and a complimentary glass of wine.
Breakfast was served from 8:30 to 9:30. I had imagined myself sleeping in that weekend, but figured since it was part of the cost of the stay I could live with it. The breakfast room had smaller tables spread out so that my bf and I ate by ourselves which I’ve read was the preference rather than sharing the table with a bunch of strangers. We were one of two couples staying there that weekend so I can’t really speak for the dining experience when they’re busy, but my breakfast was fabulous.
Terri, one of the owners, brought us a fresh cup of coffee. We started with some freshly cut fruit and had fluffy cinnamon french toast that could be cut with just a fork topped with warmed peaches and bacon so good I couldn’t stop telling my bf how good it was. On our second breakfast experience we had eggs benedict with the option of medium yolks if we didn’t like the poached version, served over Canadian bacon, an english muffin, and a hollandaise sauce was drizzled over it that could have been tomato or red pepper based. I had heard about their homemade ice cream and although it was breakfast time, Terri was kind enough to let me sample it with her delicious pecan bread.
Overall I had a very relaxing experience at the Silver Thatch Inn and was pleasantly surprised to find out that our stay also gave us access to the community pool next door (a perfect way to end a long day of tours). I found Terri and her husband, Jim, to be incredibly sweet, helpful in their suggestions on what to visit in Charlottesville (outside of the usual stuff) and not at all pushy or intrusive. I would definitely stay here again and would have no reservations about recommending it to my family or friends.

I’m really conflicted on how many stars to give the Inn. We spent a weekend here (Friday to Sunday) and had dinner at the Inn Friday night. The dinner was outstanding, a very solid four stars and they were very accommodating to my gluten-​free-​ness. They had just unveiled their new summer menu, with all sorts of deliciousness. The waitress checked for me on what would be appropriate for me to have, and they actually had OPTIONS! I ended up going with the duck burger which was really really good. Hubby had the smoked pork which was probably the winner that night. They had home made cinnamon stick ice cream which was really enjoyable. We had a very lovely welcome glass of wine at the bar (sign above the bar says, «Beware of Spirits Within») and on a second trip to the bar enjoyed the company of the bar tender who was a wealth of knowledge (thanks, Gail.)
There is a really strange dress code going on in the restaurant; I was still wearing what I had worn to work earlier that day, hubby was wearing a pair of khaki’s and a button down. During the time we were in the restaurant we saw everything from people who looked like they had been to a formal wedding to folks wearing shorts. No one batted an eye.
The room itself (can only speak to the one that we stayed in) was probably renovated in the 80s, lacked any personality, and the bathroom was hurting to be updated. There was paint peeling from the shower stalls, the faucets were moldy and the toilet is of the model that once supported wooden and/​or padded toilet seats. The bed was comfortable enough and we certainly appreciated the free wifi. This was not a place though where we were going to lounge around and hang out.
Breakfast was great, I had omelets both mornings and they again remembered my allergy and had options for me (day two would have normally been pancakes and sausage).
So it’s a B&B, but it’s not as personable as some I have been to. I never met the inn keepers, had to wait to check out (really? I already paid…) but the price was reasonable. I’m really inclined to leave it at three stars, but with the accommodation and making sure I didn’t get sick, I’m bumping it to four. By the skin of their teeth.

came here for dinner two weeks ago for my frd’s bday…
missed the $ 35 dollar 3-​course wine pairing dinner and ended up paying $ 40 – 50 per person. The wine pairing dinner only takes place during low season… next one would be in the fall…
food was great… i believe i had the most tender chicken breast in the states… but i gave it a 4-​star coz other dishes that my frds ordered tasted pretty average…
atmosphere is gorgeous… they have a nice garden area at the entrance… dining room is spacious and romantic… highly recommended for couples…

I can’t speak to the food here, because we didn’t eat here at all, but the inn itself is fantastic. B&Bs can be weird at times — there is a spot on scene about this in the movie Flirting with Disaster. There is no weirdness here, just a perfect inn and a lovely night’s rest.
My husband and I came down to visit Charlottesville on Easter weekend to return to the scene of the crime (for me) and see all the stuff I never really saw in graduate school. The Silver Thatch had always intrigued me, so I made reservations. You also can’t beat the price in comparison to the Boar’s Head, Keswick Hall, or some of the schmancier places (or places that just think that they are).
The room was flawless and beautifully decorated, the innkeepers greeted us with bottled water and cookies, and the room included (of course) breakfast every morning. Because we were on vacation, we slept past the 8:30 — 9:30am breakfast, but it was a nice gesture.
The bed in the room was the perfect balance between firm and soft and the flat panel tv in the room was nice as well, although we didn’t use it. Best of all was the wireless internet, which we did use to plan our days.
The innkeepers were congenial and the inn itself is lovely.
I would happily return to the Silver Thatch Inn!
