The Cavalier Inn at the University of Virginia

Great hotel. Staff was well dressed and friendly. The room was clean and neat. Bed comfortable and WiFi was good. Breakfast was pretty good. Lots of parking space.

This was definitely not a four star hotel, but I will give it 4 stars on here because I had a really pleasant stay here last weekend.
My boyfriend I came for a festival and some hiking near by last weekend-​expectations were low after reading other reviews that were not great and after a recent terrible experience at a nearby motel. The place is definitely older, but our room was clean, smelled fresh and bathroom looked well kept. The staff were all really friendly and helpful, and the breakfast buffet offered was not bad at all. To be fair I can see how the location (literally RIGHT on UVA campus) could present some loud and slightly rowdy nights at certain times of the year (homecoming weekend etc) but honestly when we were here everything was very tame. Overall it was a great stay for us and I would definitely stay here again next time!

This was the first time that I’ve ever been denied a late check-​out at a hotel. However, the customer service was overall great. I arrived very early and they let me grab breakfast while I waited for my room to be ready (which it was at 11 AM). The breakfast was average however we appreciated the free popcorn. The rooms are motel quality. The sink was awkwardly really low and the shower faucet spewed water when the shower was on. The rooms could definitely use some renovation, especially for being THE hotel of UVa. Based on the location, I would stay here again for a short duration.

Pros: Nice staff, close to UVA, and somewhat low price
Cons: Dirty furniture, pulled back sheets on bed and found a toe nail, when checking out I found I was charged a fee for a safe (fee was under $ 2) which is a load of crap. I would recommend spending a few more dollars for a clean up to date hotel/​motel.

I was there for a one night stay in Charlottesville. It was perfect for what we needed– an affordable place to sleep. Our room was on the «open air» side so the traffic was pretty noisy at night. Walkable distance to campus and the Corner. Free wifi and mediocre breakfast. You get what you pay for!

looking for a cheap room to stay a couple hours in while in Charlottesville visiting my grandmother at hospital. We found this room for only $ 55 plus tax! Being though we only needed for like 5 hours we took room and didn’t expect much! But it was actually OK

I have nothing bad to say! If I’m in Charlottesville again for long or short term I will definitely stay here again!

Visiting Monticello with friends, we decided to come down night before in order to check out Charlottesville and the unique architecture of the University of Virginias «Academic Village». The Cavalier Inn was a great choice for location and price.
An older hotel, rooms were clean and comfy, standard amenities (wifi, cable, hot breakfast) and so a solid 3 in my book; I’ll give them a four for the very polite, friendly and assistive staff.
If you want to save a few bucks, good choice but be aware it is a 30 minute walk to downtown nightlife. There is, however, a free trolley (bus) service that runs from «The Corner» (area next to the rotunda of UofV) to downtown every 15 minutes or so, service until 11:30pm. Cab back from downtown was $ 10.

Came back for a recruiting trip and this was the cheapest place by far! I’d always thought of it as pretty cheap when I was an undergrad but was very happy with my stay. Room was clean and front desk service was great. Good TV and obviously an amazing location with ample parking. Definitely recommended!

A great example of getting what you pay for. This said, I understood what I was probably going to get for the money I was spending and had a good overall experience.
The room was clean and it appears they go the extra mile working with what they have… older facilities. Would I expect shiny white porcelain in the bathroom? Of course not, but the well worn tub was clean, the linens and towels seemed fresh, and the tv remote was in a bag indicating it had been sanitized (kind of unsettling thinking about why they think it is necessary but I welcomed the added step). It is an older style motel with exterior entrances to the rooms, which means you are going to get a little outdoor, noise. The side of the hotel facing the UVA field had extra insulating glass/​plexi, which really helped quiet road traffic on that side. Tip: the field is where the band practices and they practiced for at least six hours one night of my stay (they had a big football game the following day), but I couldn’t hear them over my AC or TV. Throw in free parking and breakfast, great location, and nice and responsive staff and I really don’t have any major complaints. I would stay there again if I am looking for a cheap place to stay while in the area.

It’s a bed convenient to UVA but that’s about it.
Musty smell in the rooms.
Mattresses covered with a crinkly plastic (possibly to address the bedbug problem previously reported by other Unilocal guests) that was both noisy and sweaty when sleeping.
I fixed the constantly running toilet myself.
Second floor balcony is enclosed by Plexiglas (possibly to address the street noise). This created an oppressively heavy terrarium effect in the hallways on hot summer days.

We love the Cavalier Inn. We stayed there numerous times before purchasing a home. Everyone is very helpful and the proximity to UVA’s campus is unbeatable. Michael Moran, the GM, was always around to answer our questions or requests. We send our customer’s there today. Yes it can be a bit loud at times but what do you expect next to a major University.

The place was clean enough, but I wouldn’t stay there again, even after a one night stay.
Issue 1. Room next to me: a group of dudes playing music off their cellphones, sitting on the balcony until midnight, door open, beer in their hands. Made it hard to fall asleep.
Issue 2. The security guard came, they increased the volume. The security guard came again, and then he «yelled» at me saying they had a right to be on their balcony.
Issue 3. Next morning at 7am: other room next to me erupts in a loud dispute. A guy begging his girl to not break up with him. Couldn’t Fall back asleep.
Is it the hotels fault? Maybe, maybe not. The hotel was practically empty, but (I guess) to minimize walking time for their staff they put everybody in the same area. So yes, I blame them.
Good thing: the wifi worked.

I was a bit disgusted by my stay here. Its a quaint inn that is motel style, which is fine. But my shower was dirty! There were a ton of dirty hairs all over the shower area! I read in one review they even found bed bugs and I believe it! If I come here again, I’ll stay in the Hampton inn down the road!

This one is tough for me. Read this if nothing else: if you need to be close to campus or basketball this place is ideal.
Besides location, the hotel doesn’t offer much. I found a huge bug in my room-​see picture. There was lipstick or something on the wall, hair in the sink, etc. You get it. I was there on business so close and safe was what I cared about. There are outside doors so take that for what it’s worth. There is free wifi and free breakfast. There was an awful clicking noise in my room that couldn’t be remedied and the ice maker was out. If it wasn’t so close– I probably wouldn’t touch this place with a 10 foot pole.

We got a pretty good deal on this room ($ 79 on a last-​minute hotel booking site) but would never pay the full price (around $ 200?) listed on the hotel’s website! It is just a step up from a motel. The benefits: free parking, free wifi, free basic breakfast, friendly staff. The downsides: dingy room (the sheets were dirty on one of our beds), the breakfast was just ‘ok’ — fruit tasted a bit weird — scary… and unfortunately, I did not read the bedbugs review until AFTER my stay! Ugh! I hope they took care of that problem… I stayed in a room 2 doors down from the bedbug reviewer! (:-o
(i also did not look at my itemized bill to see if they charged me for the safe! I paid in advance so they took my card «only for incidentals» of which there should have been zero… I will be pissed if I look it up and see a safe charge.!). Update: yep. They sure did charge me for the safe! I did not bother to call and fight it — not worth my time — but still a lame move and I won’t go back.

Don’t judge a book by its cover! I was surprised when we drove up and it appeared that it was motel style — all the doors opening to the outside world. But only one side of the building was like that; strangely, the other side had a glass wall creating a hallway. Our room was very nice — clean, large tv, fridge, comfortable bed, clean linens and towels. It was nice to have the toilet/​shower separated from the sink as well.
The continental breakfast left much to be desired, but of course you can’t expect too much for the price of the room. I’d recommend skipping the hotel’s breakfast and heading down the road to Bodo’s Bagels, which serves up delicious bagels, pastries, and local coffee. That place was packed every morning!

I was going to give a good review but I just saw that they secretly charge you for the safe? Hell naw. That’s the kind of shady behavior I don’t need to pay for.
The room I had was pretty clean, but the bathroom smelled like feet. I thought it was me! The shower was okay but in need of some repair. Some lights didn’t work either, but I didn’t complain. The TV was nice and big, and the bed was pretty comfy. I was here for just a night so I didn’t have much time to experience a lot. The free WiFi was definitely nice and helpful!
The breakfast buffet though? That was HEAVEN. Tons of fluffy french toast, a waffle machine that I didn’t use, yummy scrambled eggs, crispy heavenly bacon, juice, milk, cereal, SAUSAGE GRAVY, FLUFFY BISCUITS, pastries, cottage cheese, canned peaches, yogurt!!! YES. I had like 3 cups of sausage gravy that glorious morning before an interview. Everything was delicious. I wish I had a few extra stomachs to devour more of this White American-​style food that I rarely have. Let me tell you, I was on the WARPATH in that breakfast room. I made a beeline for the gravy like you never saw.
I just have to give at least 3 stars for that amazing breakfast. I was so happy I was almost in tears. Nobody else seemed to be as excited as I was, though… which made me less guilty about helping myself to glorious seconds.
Yeah, I had a moment writing this review. I was angry about the safe charge that I JUST found out about but I know better for my next hotel experiences. The breakfast makes up for everything.

This place might be a step up from a motel but barley. I had a cheap rate of $ 87 so it wasn’t that big of a deal. I stayed here for a week so I think I received the whole experience of the cavalier inn.
The rooms were dirty, the sheets even felt dirty. The beds were fine. Nothing special.
The breakfast that they offer was pretty standard a waffle maker yogurt, and cereal. I would just suggest going over to the university and grabbing breakfast.
The staff was poor. From the conversations that I heard while waiting for a friend, to even pulling out a cigarette while helping me at the front desk was something that I haven’t experienced.
Also they charge you five dollars for the safe on your bill. Just inform the staff that you haven’t used it and it will be taken off.

This is an older hotel that’s been updated nicely; however, the deceptive fees they place on their invoices that they do their best to not show you before you leave takes the inn down a few notches. I thought it was unusual that no invoice was left at my door or even handed to me when I checked out, so I asked for a copy. There was a $ 2 «safe fee» on the bill. When I asked why it was in there, they asked if I used the safe and when I told them that I did not, they took it off the invoice. I don’t know why the inn would automatically charge fees under the assumption that an item in the room was going to be used. This is clearly a deceptive business practice meant to charge every guest a few dollars extra, assuming they won’t catch it unless they explicitly ask for an invoice. Respectable hotels don’t engage in such shady nonsense.
The room was clean, though the light fixture in the bathroom was rusty and the ice bucket had some dirt in it.
Their «deluxe warm breakfast» consists of a do it yourself waffle machine. There is also cereal and pastries, which they don’t seem to restock.
They require all guests to place parking passes in their cars, even if it’s a quiet weekend when no one would have any reason to park in their lot.
Overall, the disappointments accumulated as my stay went on. I wouldn’t stay there again unless there were no other alternatives.

Nice rooms, and a pretty nice breakfast (waffle iron, fresh fruits + yogurt, cereals, some small pastries/​muffins, bread/​bagels/​english muffins to toast)!
There was a gym though I couldn’t find remote to the TV closer to the machines I was using, and the bicycle’s control panel was broken so I just rode it without tracking anything. They don’t have a clock in the gym either. kind of frustrating if you’re on a tight schedule.
