History

Established in 1956.

White’s Nursery was founded in the summer of 1956 by Norman White and his wife Hetty. Norman constructed the first greenhouse of glass and began growing chrysanthemums while working full time as a naval architect at the Naval shipyard. With the help of his family, caring employees, and high quality standards, the business has grown and diversified.

White’s Old Mill Garden Center — was built in 1976. The Garden Center is a major retail garden center serving the tidewater area; Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake and Portsmouth areas.

The Garden Center is divided into three departments, greenhouse, hardgoods & gifts, and nursery.

I travel from Virginia Beach to White’s Nursery and Garden Center in Chesapeake often. Why, especially since there are nurseries and garden centers in Virginia Beach? The answer is simple: beautiful plants and beautiful people in a beautiful setting. What more can any garden lover ask?

We took our kids here for Holiday train show. White’s had kids area set up with swings and gravel play site. Christmas décor was in place as well as Santa’s displays. My kids loved the train show, playground and koi pond. This place is where I saw insert mats for the first time and love it. Everyone who work at White’s is pleasant and very helpful. We spent 1,5hr and kids had fun.

Nice garden and nursery! Large indoor area and outdoor area with fountain and small koi pond. Area is very clean and nicely displayed. The only other place of comparison would be Mcdonald’s but they took away their koi pond years ago from their independence store. I found this place looking for something else and stumbled upon it and they had the ornamental purple sweet potato vines that I have been looking for. The yellow calla lily on sale was very pretty too. They had a fall festival over the Columbus day weekend and kids had so much fun! I will definitely check back around holiday season for holiday arrangement and Christmas ornaments. The flowers and plants make the holidays so much more memorable.

I visited the White’s nurseery for their xmass tram ride to view their amazing poinsettia plants and was very impressed with the grounds and their quality that shows from planting to growing and obviously selling… After the tour I over hear a worker speaking to another worker asking for a pair of work gloves in spanish. The worker was told he’d have to purchase his own gloves… That alone stopped me in my tracks of viewing beauty to the beast… imagine busting your a** all day long and your boss doesn’t supply the basic working glove for the individual probably making much less income than deserved… omg, I shook my head and apologized for the ignorance of the establishment to treat humans in such a anamalistic way. I’ll never vist or shop an establishment that doesn’t take care of the little man making the big man rich and greedy… Bless them all, I hope judgement isn’t as bad as one could think it possibly could be.

White’s has to be the premier Garden Center on the Southside, and perhaps the entire Hampton area. I can’t say for certain as I haven’t been to any on the peninsula. The grounds are huge, and the selection is just as large. The staff seems almost overly helpful and went out of their way to explain in detail the services the Nursery offers.
The gift shop area in the front of the garden center is fairly well stocked with more than just garden and outdoor items. I’ll be back for sure.
