St Ignatius Church

I love St. Ignatius! With a welcoming congregation, beautiful music and compelling sermons I’ve felt right at home since I’ve started attending!

Visiting Boston from California for the Easter holiday, I am looking for a nice and friendly catholic church in the neighborhood of Washington T stop and I found the beautiful St Ignatius Church that is right across from the Boston College T stop. I attended the noon mass and it was such a beautiful Easter mass experience I had, the church was nicely decorated with white tulips bouquets, the father is engaging and friendly and has a sense of humor, the community is mixed with young couples and adults, the choir is vibrant. I will definitely be back to St Ignatius next time I am in town.

Having just moved to the area I struggled to find a church where I felt welcome and involved. St. Ignatius is an awesome place. I know it seems odd to «Yelp» a church, but I am excited to find somewhere like this, and I hope no one else has to struggle like I did. I have attended the 10AM mass for the past couple of weeks and have really enjoyed it. The clergy is engaging and welcoming. The music is excellent: Piano/​organ and a woman with a beautiful voice. The the community is welcoming and vibrant and the church itself is beautiful. The Boston College T stop is right across the street making is very easy to T to. I hope you enjoy St. Ignatius as much as I have. See you there!

I like this church. They have an active community of young adults and adults, though I would like to see more involvement with graduate Boston College students (I’m a grad student at BC). They recently had a beer tasting after the Sunday 5:30 mass, which is excellent. They also have things like spaghetti dinners and theology on tap etc. They have a new deacon that is spearheading reaching out to boston college and community of st. ignatius. I think he’s doing very well!
I haven’t attended the 11am mass, but I’ve gone many times to the 5:30pm mass. At this mass, the priests and deacons give good sermons, and people attending mass respond and are friendly. They open with greeting people and end with a good song. The music is very good — they have about a 10 person choir and guitar, piano, harmonica etc. They sometimes have a choir leader with a guitar that looks like a spanish parlour guitar — the music he leads/​sings is really great.
By far, after trying so many zombie-​Catholic churches in the Boston area — with people that aren’t friendly and don’t speak responses in church and priests that are «difficult to appreciate» as my refined southern mother says — this church is one of the best if you’re looking for catholic and community.

This church definitely seems to have a good sense of community. I mean I guess it’s kind of built in because of its relationship to BC (although it’s not BC’s church). but looking around, I was probably the one of the only people there on their own. The room was filled with families and college aged students in duos, trios, etc. Not only that, everyone was very active in the singing, which is one of my favorite things about church. Otherwise it can turn into a lecture or something. People need to be engaged.
The church is much smaller than I expected (but not small exactly. haha), but really nice inside. A good combination of new and old. Because of their involvement with the college community and Boston, they have a lot of support/​volunteer stuff happening (check out their website for details) for all different age groups.
The music during the mass was good. Although there seemed to be a lot of people in the chorus, but not much projection. Perhaps it was because of how the community was singing back (loudly beautiful), but it seemed like an unnecessary amount of people on the altar in my opinion. Then again, if people want to get involved with the mass. then that’s awesome. The priest was very interesting. He really seemed to gauge his audience and relate the gospel accordingly (btw. 5:30PM is the «contemporary» mass). I also think it’s really awesome he’s doing a charity bike ride.
Definitely a church you should check out if you’re in the area.
