As a female co-​owner, women (and men too) can feel comfortable they will not be misled. We are emission specialists & a full service shop for all foreign & domestic cars including check engine diagnosis, heating/​air conditioning, tune-​ups, brakes, ABS steering/​suspension, and electrical. We are an Illinois Air Team referred repair facility. Oil changes only performed during repair if requested. We have the latest scanners & diagnostic tools to provide quick, efficient service and can advise you if there are any technical service bulletins about your specific automobile, including recalls.

We highly recommend scheduled maintenance as well as provide pre-​purchase inspections for those wanting to purchase a used car. Unfortunately, we have seen too many people purchase cars that have hidden and/​or unknown problems

History

Established in 2009.

We first met when I, as a woman and car owner went to a local repair shop to service my minivan that had the dreaded check engine light on. Of course, I was fully prepared to be taken advantage of simply because I was a woman. The car was inspected by the manager (Gil) of the shop and he explained the problem.. He did not try to sell me things I didn’t need and basically, did not try to rip me off. In fact, due to the owner pushing for «extras» to be sold to customers, this manager ended up resigning his position. A mechanic with a conscience? Get real!

After that experience, I pushed Gil to get his own shop and we opened in 2009. As a woman co-​owner, I can assure you that you will not get ripped off, nor told you need repairs that you really don’t. We actually show you your old parts!

It is well-​known that women & seniors are targeted by some auto repair shops. Well, there’s a new shop in town! We are changing the perception of auto repair. Give us a call today!

I have been in the Lincoln Square area for over 20 years and two children in college. I met my business partner over 10 years ago when he was managing a local auto repair shop and I went there for service and diagnosis of the «check engine». You can read more about him in the Info section of our website.

Gil has over 30 years experience in the automotive repair industry. As male & female co-​owners, we ensure every customer is treated equally. We are a honest, reliable business who will fix your car at a reasonable rate and will NOT try to sell you things you don’t need. On the flip side, if your vehicle is not worth the repairs it needs, we will be forthright in letting you know the truth.

Great service! Car was towed due to a broken gear shift cable and I couldn’t start my car. They quickly diagnosed my issue ordered the part and had me up and rolling.
They have worked out a discount with Enterprise and give you a discount if you use cash.
Overall service was awesome! I will be taking my car to them from jow on.

Gil and Jayne were absolutely fantastic. I went in not knowing what was wrong with my car and they gave a honest, simple answer. They fixed the car right there and even threw in a few little extras for no cost. The whole time they explained everything to me and asked me questions. They didn’t provide any surprises or require more work. It was complete transparency.
I have never experienced a more honest car repair shop in my life. After my experience with them, they have a loyal customer for life. The customer service is the best I have had in business, with big or small shop. They make you feel like family.
If you need reliable, honest, and great work done on your car, you need to go to A to Z.

my car died Sunday afternoon whilst making my way into a turn lane.
once AAA tow came, they were going to take the car somewhere on Belmont (i’d only ever taken the car to be serviced near my work in the burbs).
while following the tow, he stopped when he saw and remembered A to Z. MUCH closer to home. he told us he’s left many cars there before and that people seem to like them AND they have a lot with a key drop– perfect and necessary for a Sunday.
i got my car back the next day. Gill and Jane provided fast, courteous service. definitely will be using them again if we need to.

Jayne, Gil and Chris continue to take care of my 1989 Corsica (now with 62,000 miles). In addition, Gil really went out of his way last week on the day of the tornado outbreak – a friend was passing through Chicago on his way to Milwaukee when his windshield wipers failed. It was closing time. Gil stayed late and my friend was able to get back to Milwaukee. And his departure coincided with the deadly tornadoes that were hitting Fairdale and Rochelle. Not many places in town that would do that for a stranger. Thanks Gil. You’re the best.

Three years later and A to Z Auto Service is still our go to place when we need a mechanic! Jayne and Gill continue to be honest and up front business owners who do great work. It’s an added bonus that they are both such generous and funny people. It is clear that they take pride in their business. For the past two years we’ve been going to Firestone and I always got the feeling they were ripping us off. Every time we went in they found something expensive that needed to be done. So we tried this place based on excellent Unilocal reviews and really liked their service. They looked at my car and reviewed what had been recommended by Firestone. Not only did they do a great job, they reimbursed us for an extra day of car rental when it took them longer than they thought it would. This is our new car shop for sure.

I would send my mother, brother, sister, and grandmother here. Gill and Jane are two of the best mechanics I have ever worked with. My car, which has its share of problems, was hard on them. But they worked with me, with a rental agency, and with the Volvo parts place to get my car back into working order.
Gill was great, showing me where the problems were and what was necessary to fix them. Jane was also great, friendly and helpful.

Went into A to Z to have our car repaired back in November. Not only is Jane wonderful company, But Gill was prompt and reasonable with our repairs (we only had a certain amount budgeted and he was willing to work with us to make sure we could travel to WI for Thanksgiving). He showed me where all the issues lied, and where we would need repairs in the near future.
Jane even dropped me off with my newborn back at our home while the car was repaired (we live right up the street). And let’s not forget Slugo the pup, he’s pretty awesome too.
They will definitely have our patronage from here on out!

I just moved into North Center and needed a car repair. Based on the Unilocal reviews I tried A to Z. They were really helpful and extremely nice people. I called and made an appointment, upon arrival they assessed the issue, and completed the repair while I was in the shop. Very helpful and I will definitely go back. I just want to say that I have been to Gil and Jayne several times now. I will never go anywhere else. I recommend them to everyone I know, even though I secretly fear they might all go there, and then AtoZ will be too busy to take care of me. There is no other place like it. You have to go and see for yourself.

As long as I live in Chicago I will bring my car to A to Z Auto Service — They never overcharge; my car has run great everytime I have brought it there (the only reason I have had to bring it back is bc I need to use my car A LOT for my job, so it gets a lot of wear & tear); AND, they are so nice.

My suv was dying every time I shifted to reverse and when the car warmed up it would constantly die when stopping. The dealer said probably the torque converter. Expensive job. Took it to A to Z auto, Gil and Jane looked at it and Gil new it wasn’t the converter. They even searched the internet to find similar problems, above and beyond expectations. Gil found it was only a wire that had broken, He soldered a new piece of wire in it and now the car runs like new. $ 125.00 was a deal compared to dealer price that wouldn’t have fixed the problem anyway. great job highly recommend;

This review is quite overdue. My very first service was done late october 2013. After looking around, i saw little cards with gratitude which help me reassure that its a nice place for women who doesn’t understand much about car. They were informative and i had my stuff fixed. Given that the first time went well, i rated two star. My second/​third experience was horrible. I went back for an oil change and check to see why my car won’t heat up the way it was supposed to. The guy was very quick with the oil change but sent me away because his schedule was packed. (His quick fixed was to add coolant until its warm up.) Of course, i makes an appointment to get things fixed up because even if i don’t know about car, continuous refilling coolant isn’t the right way to fixed it. Since it was the holiday, not only do i try to compromise with his schedules saying he have a party here and there, i even took a day off on the day of the appointment to get the car fixed asap. On the day of the appointment, he blew me off because he «stuck». It was a super cold day and i got my car there on time even if i have to shove the snow. If he wasn’t ready, its courtesy to just call and let me know he wasn’t up to the task. After driving all the way there with a broken down car that literally overheat every 5 mins, he said the best i could do is put more coolant.
This is definitely a rant on the customer service. its advertise for women yet the very lady can’t even talk to the mechanic about the situation (She actually look kind of scare when trying to giving her input.) They also need to work on organizing theirs schedule.

My good friend Phil who is a Snap-​on tool dealer suggested I called Gill to get my 2003 Toyota 4Runner repaired. Scheduled for the repair and was taken promptly. Gill and Jane are proud small business owners who take pride in the work that they do. Gil and Jane are fantastic. After my car failed to start and the good ol’ «pump the clutch» trick wasn’t working anymore, I had my car towed to A to Z Auto.
The service on my car was done timely, honestly, and professionally. I was informed the connector on the starter had broken and was repaired and the price was very reasonable!

Brought my car in to have its brake pads and rotors replaced in the morning, left with it that afternoon. Total cost $ 545, which is a totally fair price for four pads/​rotors installed. I will definitely return here the next time my car needs work and I’m just feeling too lazy to do it myself.

I’ve only has one experience with Jayne and Gil so far but I’ll never take my car anywhere else now. As a woman, I’ve always felt that mechanics/​repair shops took advantage of me and after having Gil diagnose my car’s issues, I’m certain. The service was quick and AMAZINGLY priced, but the best part was that Gil took the time to explain the problem in detail and he walked me through the steps to fix the problems myself.
In short, expert service, timely repairs, and reasonable prices. This place is the best.

Hey! You! The person who is thinking about taking your car to the dealership to get you car fixed. Stop! A to Z to is real deal, and they are better than the dealership and will not overcharge you.
It really doesn’t get any better than A to Z. Seriously, I have taken my car here many times and every time they do a wonderful job. I’ve never had any problems with the work they have done and recommend them to everyone. Gil and Jayne consistently go above and beyond for their customers. What mechanic do you know that keeps and shows you the part that was wrong with your car, and then takes the time to explain to you what was wrong with your car?
Clearly, I cannot say enough good things about them. Give them a try, you won’t be disappointed.
