It took me a while to find a perfect place to do my hair in Chicago.
I came to Art of Hair Design Salon and never wanted to go anywhere else again.
Everyone is super friendly and welcoming, all the hairdressers are capable of understanding my thoughts about how I want my hair to look and bringing it to life.

My boyfriend’s hair was… out of control. He insisted he didn’t need a haircut, but really… he needed it badly. Anyway, the only way that hair was getting cut was if I was going to take matters into my own hands and book him a damn appointment!
So around 10am on a Friday, I started calling around Old Town (I live around the area). Most of the places just had terrible phone etiquette, which I could handle if their prices were reasonable. But literally the majority of responses I got on pricing were «well, for men it starts at $ 45 if you go with a newer stylist but like.$ 80 if you go with a pro.» …
I literally called 5 places before I called Art of Hair Design Salon. The phone call was straight forward. «$ 20 if he doesn’t need us to wash his hair; $ 25 if he does.» I wanted the last appointment of the day — keep in mind this was Friday and I wanted a same-​day appointment. The lady was super nice and said, «oh, 6:15/6:30 work?» .hell yeah it did!
Anyhow, he popped in and out within 20 minutes — the shaggy mop on his head turned into something recognizable and I was happy.

I had a terrible experience at Art of Hair Design. The Latina stylist insisted I had lice halfway through the haircut and ended it immediately. I bought a lice treatment, did it twice that night, yet in my careful comb-​throughs each time I didn’t find a thing in my hair (if you have lice then you find sesame seed-​sized critters and their eggs). I think she was wrong (I’ve had zero itching as well), yet she said it with utter, horrified certainty, before ushering me out of the salon.
I checked where I’d been sleeping, and the people I was staying with checked their hair, and we all had nothing. We scoured the bed and couch where I’d been the day before. I did a nighttime’s worth of laundry washing and heat-​drying (heat apparently kills lice) anything my head might have touched.
When I returned the next day to finish the cut, the stylist insisted I throw everything at home out — that washing and drying are not enough (despite that my researching lice revealed that heat exposure is all you really need, and that lice will die after two days without being on a human head anyway).
When I asked her what the lice looked like the day before, she immediately insisted «I didn’t make it up,» which made me curious why she ran to that self-​defense so quickly.
Every interaction with her seemed to be negative and subtly demeaning. A part of me wondered if she just wanted to ruin someone’s day.
When I asked her the next day if my lice was better now, she couldn’t bring herself to say yes. She just grunted that it was «fine.»
The haircut itself, too, has left a long lock of hair at the front that should have been cut, but now just falls out of place and looks silly.
If she’d been courteous in these interactions, or warm and understanding as she maybe suspected there could be lice, and I should get it checked out? Then I would’ve been appreciative. But her overall tone gave me more the sense that she is carrying a lot of resentment and found a poor customer to take it out on.

What an amazing place! Lina has done a wonderful job with her new store!!! The salon on wells is the new place and it looks amazing! Very cozy and very comfortable. The service is amazing and everyone is so friendly. Lina cuts my hair and does an amazing job every single time. You can not go wrong with this place. I casually went in one day to the old store to try it out and ever since then I haven’t cheated on her! It would be a shame to let someone else touch my hair!

I was in Chicago for work and agonizing over whether to dye my gray roots or just grow them out. A friend who works with hair recommended a way to grow it out. I called Art of Hair Design and when I went for my appointment with Lena, she said exactly the same tonight about how to grow it out. Her highlights and cut were impeccable and I have gotten a ton of compliments. She did a great threading of my eyebrows as well. It is a big airy clean salon with such a great staff!
If I am ever in Chicago again, I will go to Art of Hair Design!

Went by for my appointment yesterday — wow — Lena and Bona (and their talented spouses) have done a gorgeous job on the new salon. Its elegant and beautiful but, still, has the same friendly atmosphere as the old one on Clark St. Just the opposite of my old salon which was so cold and intimidating.
Well done… plus my hair is fantastic — Lena, this is just the style, cut and color to make me want to look forward to summer and miles of running but still having a cute hair style when I’m done. THANK YOU.

I called today, two days before Christmas and one hour before I had to be at work. As I called I knew it would be a long shot to get an appointment. I was told if I was there soon I could probably be fit in.
I showed in 5 minutes later and thought maybe I should be worried that it seemed I was being «squeezed in» it seemed, but what’s the worst that could happen? This place has great reviews.
Lina takes me over, her hands moving quickly and her conversation stimulating and interesting. Some ten minutes later, we are done and I was very impressed how a quick haircut could come out looking so great! I’ve had plenty of good haircuts (and some awful) but everything about this experience was top of the line. I don’t always have great chats with stylists since I’m a pretty shy person, but today she brought it out of me like we were good friends.
Maybe one day we will be, because I’ll definitely be back next month.

I found this place on Unilocal two years ago. I am soo blessed to have found them. They know your name every time you walk in the door and the service and price are amazing! I get tons of compliments from my co-​workers every time I get my hair cut or colored.

Phenomenal hair cut. Usually hair dressers have a hard time with my thick straight mess, but not here. Gave me exactly what I was looking for and more. Offered great tips and advice and never tried to upsell me on product I didn’t need. All this at the best price you’ll find in the city. AND free touch ups in between cuts. I’ve found my go-​to spot.

I love this place. Two very sweet sisters and a couple of cute friends. All talented stylists, charming people. Reasonably priced, efficient service. Happy welcoming place.

First trip to Chicago and stayed at Hotel Lincoln. My hair needed styling badly. I wanted a shop nearby that I could walk to. I needed Unilocal Help. I did a quick search and read the glowing reviews on Art of Hair Design. I got in quickly and immediately fell in love with the «adorable sisters –in-​laws with a lot of experience» that another reviewer talked about. Bono and Lena are cute, polite, professional, hip, up to date, funny and wonderful; to say nothing of their beautiful smiles. Bona not only gave a great cut but also gave me some wonderful styling tips that in 40 years I haven’t been given. Do yourself a favor if you have hair you can’t do a thing with and you just had a cut the day before. If the cut is great you can make your hair do things you never thought was possible! If it’s bad even the one style you have will look dated.

I hate to write this review because I was genuinely happy with my cut and color, but my blouse was completely stained with dye (a few spots on the sleeves, back and front). Before starting I asked if I should take it off, but she assured me there would be no issue. Lesson learned… listen to your gut. The worst part was that they didn’t point out the stains so I returned to work looking like a crazy hot mess. I would have had a lot more respect if they addressed the situation immediately.

If you r looking for a fancy, «be seen» scene, u’ll want to look for another salon.
This is a friendly, neighborhood salon that welcomes appts or walk ins.
I’ve had my hair colored and cut by all 3 of the stylists there and their work is great, reasonable and consistent.
The owner, Lena, takes great pride in her shop and services. Bona and Diana are equally talented and friendly.
I definitely recommend Art of Hair.

I had one of those 911: need a haircut TODAY moments yesterday. Another salon cancelled my appointment hours beforehand (so annoying), so I was in a bit of a bind. Especially because most salons are not open on Mondays or close very, very early. This world is simply not made for the working woman.
Art of Hair Design is right next to my usual nail salon in the neighborhood, and I thought, why not? I called around 2PM and got an appointment at 6:15PM, which was perfect. I noticed on their door that they accept walk-​ins, too, which is great.
Some things I enjoyed about my experience include the speed (in and out in about 45 minutes), the friendliness of the two hairdressers, the unpretentious atmosphere, and the extreme quality of the service. Sure, this place is no frills. But I don’t need a cup of Armenian mint tea while I wait 20 minutes past my appointment time. I’d rather sit down right away and get to it.
Bona gave a great shampoo and a really beautiful haircut. I’m growing my hair out a little, and she knew exactly how to layer it to give it more texture while not compromising the length.
The salon is usually a rushed, anxiety-​provoking experience because of confusing pass-​offs between shampoo people and hairdressers, and lots of bizarre tipping rituals like dropping an envelope of cash into a small Buddha and stashing singles in your bra quickly to give to a shampoo girl.
When I leave work, I don’t want to think. I don’t want to have to figure out where to stash my coat and how to get back to a stylist’s station in a 4000 square foot space with no direction.
When all was said and done, I paid $ 50 and got a really great haircut. She tackled all my split ends and I feel like I will be able to go longer than usual between haircuts because it was so well-​done.
If you go to the salon for the Kiehl’s lotion in the bathroom or the sensory oils massaged on your scalp, please just keep paying for your $ 90 haircut from a guy named Sebastian with an angular haircut and a Gucci logo belt.

I should have probably written this review a long time ago, but better late than never.
I used to live on the 1400 block of Dearborn, therefore this place was a hop and skip away. The owners are adorable sisters –in-​laws with a lot of experience. After moving to Chicago in 2008, I had several hair appointments all around the city, trying to find the right one. I first came here on a whim, because they take walk ins. Now I wonder what I would do if Lina and Bona ever closed up shop or if I moved away. These are some of the nicest ladies I have ever met. The always give me tea, ask me about my family, and chat me up like they appreciate me as a pal. I have never had a bad experience here and their prices are very reasonable. And oh, my hair always looks good!
Their shop is immaculate, super clean. I don’t go as often as I used to because I grew my hair out so it requires less work, but these gals totally rock my socks off.

I can’t say enough about this salon. My husband and I (along with daughter, niece) have been customers for several years, and have never been disappointed. Lina is the owner-​operator who is an expert in her field and a professional in her own right. Her coloring and styling techniques are amazing, as is her ability to beautifully handle all types of hair (I have very curly hair). Like any good salon owner she has surrounded herself with quality stylists: Bona, Diana and Tanya, all of which are great. In summary, and what keeps me going back, is the high level of skill, flexibility, location (I live next door), cleanliness of salon, and superb customer service. Yes, they’re stuck with me and mine…

Came here for a hair cut, after reading all the great reviews on Unilocal.Scheduling my appointment was super easy. The haircut was quite good and the stylist did listen to my concerns and suggestions. They use Moroccan Oil products (in my case they used a light moroccan oil styling crème), and I was really impressed with the end product.
While I was getting my hair done I got a chance to talk to Lina and Bona, who were very friendly and a pleasure to talk to. It is not everyday you see neighborhood folks waving hello to Lina and Bona as they walked by, or even peak to say hello in person and crack a joke — so refreshing to see.
I will definitely go back to Art of Hair Design Salon and even experiment a little more with color in the future.
