Car-X Tire & Auto Service

I realized I had a flat tire in the parking lot of Home Depot at Lincoln & McCormick Blvd. So I drove across the street to the Goodyear Tire Center. They quoted me $ 220 for the tire and labor. I walked out of the store and called Car-​X and they quoted me $ 160 for the same service. I took the risk and drove the few miles on the flat, and I’m glad I did.
The service was friendly and honest. They told me the tire would need to be ordered locally and estimated a few hour time wait (not terrible since I live near Western & Foster). Ended up that the tire was a special size but I was told I would not be charged additionally for it and was told when to pick up my car.
The cost ended up being $ 30 less than the quote $ 160. I’m fortunate that there is a place like this near my home, and equally lucky that the service is great.

I am baffled about how even one person can give this location a one-​star review. I have been coming here for the past few years, and every single time it’s a five-​star experience. The mechanics patiently explain anything that is going on with my car. They’ve even saved me a few dollars for showing me ways to fix a minor issue (ex. bent wheel). The front-​desk guy (I think he’s the manager) is as pleasant over the phone as he is in person. They’re quick. They’re personable. And after a particularly horrendous experience at Meineke (5740 North Western Avenue) with the worst service on the planet, I was completely exhausted the first time I came to this location. Meineke wanted to charge me at least three times as much for a muffler replacement and a tire issue. Car-​X fixed the same issue within 1.5 hours. I used to go to the Car-​X in Bedford Park for years with a previous car, and that location was just as consistently good. I honestly just think any Car-​X is a winner. I’ve never had a bad experience with them in 17 years of driving.

Nice people. They took the time to explain what needed to be done and the total cost before doing the work.

These guys were so helpful to me. I stopped in today, ¹¹⁄₁₇ with my heater not working and the temperature outside at like 18°. They were able to fix my heater in just a few minutes and didn’t charge me because it was something simple. I really appreciate that kind of service and will definitely come back for any services my car needs. Thanks guys!!!

Always VIP service here! The manager, Bob is so professional and friendly! It’s so hard to find a trustworthy mechanic so when I take my car in I know it’s in good hands. I never have been cheated out of any services. The service is always completed in a timely fashion regardless of how busy they are!

My wife and I have been going to this location for a couple of years, and they are consistently very friendly, quick, and I trust them. We’ve never had any surprises, they call before they start working on the car, and we’ve never been overcharged. They are terrific.

Bob and his staff are amazing! I won’t take my car anywhere else! After a series of problems with my car (thanks Chicago winter and pot holes!) my car started making a strange grinding sound when I was making right turns. I’m a stay at home mom and my husband was out of town, so I was afraid of taking my daughter in the car in case the problem was serious. So Bob sent some guys from the shop and they picked up my car, found out that the problem was simply that the shield on my car had come off and lodged next to my tire. They fixed the problem, and drove my car back to me, free of charge!
I really cannot thank them enough!!!

I came in to CarX because of problems with my car not starting, an oil change, and issues with tire pressure in one or two tires.
They told me that the issue with the car not starting was the alternator and that I had nails in the sidewall of ALL 4 TIRES.
They quoted me about $ 350.00 for the alternator and $ 450.00 for a new set of tires.
I let them replace the alternator, but held off on the tires.
A week later I take my car down to Rivera’s Tire Shop. They proceed to take off one of the tires (the one that had lost a significant amount of tire pressure). They tell me I just had a small leak in the tire rim and they fixed it in about 10 minutes. Oh and NO NAILS!
Total cost $ 10.00. I gave them an extra five just because they saved me from getting screwed by CarX.
I give two stars only because the alternator fix seemed to do the trick, but for all I know they may have screwed me a bit here too. How can you know?
Bottom line, I will never take my car to this car-​x again. They are my car-​ex.

Once again, Bob and his staff took care of my needs. It’s always scary when something goes wrong with your car but these guys always give you an honest and fair price. I have been going there for over 10 years and I have always been treated with respect. Thanks Bob and staff for an excellent experience, again!

I’ve been going to this Carx for years, and I am very surprised to see all of these negative reviews If I’ve ever needed to have something major fixed, I would shop around like anyone else would, and sometimes use a different service (as CarX is not really fr major repairs), but sometimes CarX would be the better deal.
I know the manager, Bobby, there and he is always very polite, knowledgeable, and fair. I’ve never had an issue with them fixing the wrong thing, or may car not being repaired properly etc. They are usually very busy, so you can wait for a while at times, but I’m always taken care of. Everyone won’t have the same experience, but mine have always been good.

Had taken my car in several times for oil changes in the past 3 years. At least twice was with Groupon deal.
Overall, the service manager there is professional, but sometimes when his mechanics ring up the service, they can be a bit short.
Everything was fine until I took my Versa in a few months ago. The mechanic there asked me to come in and showed me some oil running down one of my car’s wheels. He said that my wheel bearing needed replacing, and that it was going to cost about $ 250.
I said I would need to check my car’s extended warranty, to which he replied I probably don’t have a warranty left on my car (and he would know better than me?). I felt very pressured and that they were doing this to me because I am a woman.
When I held firm and said I’ll check with my warranty, they weren’t too happy and rang me up for my service with attitude. Then I checked my warranty and found out that the wheel bearing IS covered, so I took it in to the Evanston Autobarn for service.
Once there, they said that the part broken was the CV BOOT and not the WHEEL BEARING. They repaired with my $ 100 deductible and everything was fine.
The auto mechanic at Car-​X obviously didn’t know what he was talking about. He would have opened my car up, and did the wrong repair, and probably have charged me for it. I stopped going there for oil changes now and I won’t be back in the future. Will not deal with unscrupulous repair shop.

I would give zero stars if I could. I have gone to this place for awhile for oil changes. Twice now, they’ve told me that I need new brake pads and rotors. Since my car is relatively new, I was wary and decided to check with a different mechanic shop. Just got back from AB Auto on Ashland where they told me there’s nothing wrong with my brakes and that I should have at least another year on the pads. They didn’t charge me anything to check (see my review on AB, which was awesome!) I will never go back. I hate that you can’t trust some businesses but hopefully this helps someone else from getting cheated!

I underwent wheel alignment in Jan. Same problem occurred in July. So I called them again, and they told me to bring it in. I came in to hear that they have 90-​day policy, so they charged me full price at the end. In the receipt, there’s a list of unnecessary problems I «should have fixed». With this receipt, I can’t fight my battle even if it is their fault for my car’s malfunction within a year.
NEVER GO HERE!

Since our normal place was closed and we needed an oil change asap, I looked up the next closest place, which was Car-​X. I usually like the independent auto service places since they are usually honest and cheaper.
I told them about the $ 19.99 oil change coupon online, so they gave that to me. The guy at the counter was really nice and friendly, so they get a star for that.
We came to pick up the car after about an hour, and the mechanic had us come take a look at the struts that he said were about to break. It was really hard to see anything, but he said if they weren’t replaced, it would eventually break and our tire would blow out. His estimate was $ 540. We said we’d think about it, and went home to do some research. We called around to a few other places, and found somewhere that would do it for only $ 350!
So we took our car there, and had them look at it, and they came out to say that they didn’t even need replacing! What? Car-​X is definitely just looking to make some $$. I hate that you can’t just take your car in for a regular oil change and not be scared into getting something else fixed.

Here is my first review from Dec 2010.
I have two things to say about my experience at this Car-​X.
1) I came in with a flat tire. They found a screw in it and plugged the hole for $ 20. And I was out of there. So I went away happy.
2) But. The mechanic tried to tell me that I needed a new tire b/​c there was a previous plug in that same tire. Which makes zero sense. I told him to just fix the flat. He was obviously trying to cheat me.
Beware of this place. Don’t trust them at all. I won’t go again.

I have been a customer at this location for many years, but I recently had a situation in which I was unhappy with the service I received. The manager personally called me at home the very next morning to apologize and to rectify the situation. It is nice to know that there are still businesses that care about their customers. I was really impressed and will continue to be a loyal customer.

Had a good experience here. They fit me in for an oil change right away on my way home from work. Told them I had a slow leak in one of the tires and they found a nail in it, told me upfront it would be $ 15 to fix. $ 37 all told, oil change and tire, which I thought was a tad pricey, but all things considered – they were fast (done in 20 minutes), convenient, and courteous – I felt like it was worth it.

Do NOT trust these guys
I had gone to these guys a couple times for basic maintenance (eg oil changes and an alternator). They always seemed very pleasant and patient, but I made the mistake of trusting them to take care of my good friend (who is female) and they took total advantage of her. She needed a battery installed — I even called ahead and asked them to just install the battery that I had bought for her. They ended up not only refusing to install the battery that they had agreed to do over the phone, but charged her twice as much for a battery, plus labor AND convinced her she needed a new alternator… that I HAD JUST REPLACED THE YEAR PRIOR.
Total crooks — push your car to the mechanic down the road before taking your vehicle here.

What scheisters! I really wish I had read these reviews beforehand, although I have been here once or twice before with seemingly good results… come to think of it, I had to reset my own check engine light after their last oil change so never mind.
What a miserable experience! The only time I could go in to use my $ 29 groupon for an oil change, safety inspection, new wiper blades, and tire rotation (not bad!) was before work at 7am. In my morning fog, I allowed the mechanic to conjole me into not needing the tire rotation because the «better tires are already on the front.» I later asked my mechanic friend and he said, yeah, total bullshit. Always get the tires rotated. Secondly, the groupon was only for two «regular» sized blades, and even though one of my blades is ridiculously SHORTER, I got charged an extra $ 6.
So, yeah, I got screwed for $ 35 for an oil change and 2 (of the three needed) blades. What weezly, lazy, jerks. Never again!
